By the looks of their latest offerings, Teravail looks to be getting a grip. Literally. Adding three new tire platforms to their line up, Teravail’s tread options have just gotten more aggressive for both gravel and mountain bike use.

Rutland Gravel

With a name like Rutland, it may not come as a surprise that this tire is a burly gravel monster designed for the worst conditions. But it also supposedly is just as qualified for coarse but dry gravel and yet features ramped center knobs to keep the rolling resistance low for all conditions use.

Teravail digs in with Rutland gravel + Ehline & Honcho aggressive MTB tires Teravail digs in with Rutland gravel + Ehline & Honcho aggressive MTB tires

Three sizes will be offered with tires coming in 700c x 42mm, 700c x 38mm and 650b x 47mm in either black or tan sidewalls. Teravail says that getting the color right while keeping the casing air tight for tubeless reliability was a challenge, but they are happy with the result and claim that the tan wall tires are just as air tight as the all black versions.

The black versions will also be available in their Durable casing with bead to bead protection including a woven rip stop nylon to stop the propagation of the hole after a puncture. This should result in smaller holes that are easier to plug rather than a giant slash in the case of impact with sharp gravel. The durable tires feature a 50tpi layer under the tread and 30tpi layer under the sidewall to prevent pinch flats and sidewall cuts while providing a supple ride. Both 650b and 700c tires are designed around a 23mm internal width rim.

Ehline MTB

Crusing A-Line? Reach for the Ehline. Geddit? Ok, so there’s more to the Ehline MTB tire than bad dad jokes as this one is a new MTB model from Teravail that is geared towards hard packed trails as a “gnarly XC tire”. Because of that it has a lower profile center tread section with aggressive side lugs for cornering. This should make it a decent option for front and rear on  XC or Trail bikes and hard pack trails, or as a rear when paired with something like the new Honcho below.

Offered in both 27.5 and 29″ tires, both will be available in 2.3 or 2.5″ widths which are best suited for 24mm or 29mm internal rim widths respectively. Like the Rutland, the tires will be sold in black or tan wall, and the black version will be available in Light & Supple or Durable casing.

Honcho MTB

The burliest option of the three is the new Honcho MTB tire. With bigger knobs, the tire also comes in slightly bigger sizing than the Ehline with 2.4 and 2.6″ widths in 27.5 and 29″ versions. The larger angular knobs are designed to grab hold of roots and rocks helping to keep traction on challenging terrain.

Other than the different in width, the rest of the details of the Honcho are pretty similar to the Ehline with the same options in casings and sidewall colors as well as intended rim width.

All three of the new Teravail tires are available now.

You may have noticed that bicycles come in an amazing range of tire sizes these days. That means whether you’re a shop, or just an individual with a lot of different bikes, finding a rear wheel stand that will fit that wide range of sizes and holds securely can be a little challenging. That’s where the MSW Pop & Lock comes in.

Pop it & Lock it with the new MSW one-size-fits-all rear wheel stand, more

The Pop & Lock is a spring loaded rear wheel stand that locks into place when you push a rear wheel into it. Obviously, this is not the first of this style, but it’s one that MSW has put their spin on.

Offered in seat post mounted CO2 + Bottle (27.2 and 31.6mm diameters only), or frame mounted CO2 only, the Seltzers are available now for $25 and $15 respectively. Sadly, the Seltzers won’t help you actually create your own LaCroix on the go.

Finally, MSW is primarily a parts and accessories brand for bike shops with a QBP account, so the company has added new hand pump options. These will be available separately, or as part of one of MSW’s Ride and Repair kits which comes with the essentials in one package to get you out the door and riding.

Got an older bike lying around that could use an update? Maybe you’d like to replace the fork with something a little lighter, a little more modern? That’s where Whisky is hoping to help out with their newest carbon forks. With modern performance but sizing and standards that will fit classic bikes, the new forks will allow you to get a bit fancy with your ride.

Whisky wants to help you get fancy with three new carbon forks for Road & CX

Starting with the No. 7 Straight RD fork, this one is designed to be the perfect replacement fork for most road bikes with a straight 1 1/8″ steerer tube. Built around a 367mm axle to crown measurement and 45mm rake, the fork offers clearance for up to 700c x 30mm tires.

Before XTR M9100 is even widely available in shops, Wolf Tooth Components is already on the case. Specifically? Replacement chain rings. As they’ve found out in their personal testing and development, the new XTR chains are not compatible with the current chainrings on the market. That meant a new tooth profile had to be designed to play nice with the new chains while offering their signature chain retention and long wear.

One of the biggest hurdles for aftermarket brands like WTC is that the inner links of the chain extend farther past the rollers on the new design. That and the fact that the chain interacts with the chainring differently led to the complete redesign of their tooth profile to operate smoothly and quietly with the new XTR drivetrain.

As far as WTC knows, these will be the one of the first 9100 compatible chain rings available on the market, and they’ll be available for a wide selection of cranks including Race Face Cinch direct mount, and the Shimano Direct Mount cranks in both Boost and Super Boost Plus chainlines. They’ll also be available for a number of other cranks but with WTC’s CAMO system which cuts down on the number of skus and allows for quick changes in tooth count and material. Most of the options will also be available in round or elliptical rings.

While the Race Face Cinch round rings are available now, everything else is available for pre-order with the latest rings shipping by mid-April. Given how long it’s taking for the full Shimano roll out, this should be in plenty of time.

The other new product hanging out at Frostbike (under embargo) was the new ReMote Dropper Lever for dropbars. We got a sneak peek of the new lever at Interbike 2017, but it hasn’t made it to market – until now.

As more and more gravel bikes add dropper post compatibility, riders are looking for better options for a remote. Something that is easy to access without interfering with shifting or braking. That has led WTC to look to the end of the bar with a lever that doubles as a bar end plug. The expanding plug will fit most bars and it can be rotated to suit your preference of angle. The lever itself features Delrin bearings which can be serviced or replaced, and the cable clamp is designed to work with any cable actuated post.

Available now, the ReMote Drop Bar lever sells for $79.95.

For the longest time, Finish Line’s Speed Clean has had a permanent placement on my work bench. Along with cleaning brake rotors, there’s just so many uses. But now, there’s a new kid on the block – Finish Line Disc Brake Cleaner

New Finish Line Disc Brake Cleaner will keep your rotors and pads clean

Calling it an acetone free brake cleaner that is designed to decontaminate metal, Disc Brake Cleaner is said to evaporate and leave zero residue. While similar to Speed Clean, the Disc Brake Cleaner lacks the Turbo Sprayer and uses less propellant, so it should result in a more efficient way of cleaning your brakes – apparently a little goes a long way. Finish Line also says it’s safe to use on the pads themselves, and is designed to decontaminate brake parts leading to quieter performance.

Compliant with California chemical regulations, the Brake Cleaner will sell for $8.99 in a 10oz aerosol can. Available soon.

Somehow, Tinker Juarez is still out there crushing laps on some of the toughest marathon races around. So it seems fitting that just before his 58th birthday, Tinker is getting a new signature grip from the folks at ODI – playfully named the Dread Lock.

Grab your bike by the dreads with new Tinker Juarez signature ODI Lock on grips Grab your bike by the dreads with new Tinker Juarez signature ODI Lock on grips

Adding to the F-1 Series Vapor Grips, the Dread Locks use the same A.I.R.E. foam compound, only this time it’s comolded to a plastic core. The outer section of the foam has a sort of pistol grip shape with divots for your fingers, but the inner core has some unique shaping as well.

Grab your bike by the dreads with new Tinker Juarez signature ODI Lock on grips

Rather than just a straight core, the plastic center has a domed shape to it to create a more ergonomic support structure underneath the foam. Since you can’t see the dome, ODI added an arrow to the end of the grip. When the arrow is pointed directly up, the dome is facing back towards the rider at 45°. Obviously, you can rotate the grip’s position to your liking, and then lock it in place with the single lock on collar.

Available in five colors, the Dread Lock will sell for $32.95 per set.

If you’ve ever met the mad scientist behind Kali Helmets, you know that Brad Waldron is obsessed with making a safer helmet. But he also knows that even if a helmet is safer, not everyone can afford to shell out for premium level helmets. Because of that, the new Pace Helmet offers nearly all of the protection story of more expensive helmets, but at a much more approachable price.

Kali lowers the entry cost to protection with full featured Pace helmet

Kali lowers the entry cost to protection with full featured Pace helmet

In terms of cost, one of the biggest factors in being able to reduce the price of the helmet is in the LDL – or Low Density Layer. Kali had a protection breakthrough when they introduced their original LDL padding system which reduces rotational impacts by 25% and also low-G linear impacts by 30%. But that original LDL system was expensive to develop and therefore, expensive to put in a helmet.

Now, Kali has found a new material (that is currently nameless) which mimics the performance of their higher end LDL system, but with a lower cost. That means they were able to implement similar rotational and low-G linear impact protection in the Pace helmet which has just a $60 price tag.

In addition to the protection story, the Pace is a good looking helmet with a full PC wrap on the bottom, deeper rear protection, and a dial fit system. More details should be available, along with the helmet, soon!

“What have you seen that’s interesting?” That’s a question that we often get at various trade shows, and it’s one that the answer is usually reserved for the biggest launches. But every once in a while, there’s something small that only the true bike nerds will appreciate that catches our eye. For me at Frostbike this year, one of those items was the new Pro Dropper Kit from Jagwire. Created to address a very specific issue, the cable kit should lead to better functioning cable operated dropper seat posts in the very near future.

Dropper post specific cables? Jagwire Pro Dropper Kit makes it a reality

How do you make a dropper post specific cable set? Apparently you start by creating a much thinner inner cable wire. Instead of the traditional 1.2mm cables used for shifters, the dropper cable measures just 0.8mm. Jagwire says this results in a more flexible cable which is superior for the tight bends often associated with internal cable routing as the dropper cables transition from the downtube to the seat tube. Like their higher end shift cables, the dropper cable is polished stainless steel to make it as slippery as possible.

Dropper post specific cables? Jagwire Pro Dropper Kit makes it a reality

The kit also includes a new Flex-SL cable housing which is still a 4mm outer diameter with the same linear strand construction as shift housing, but it uses a more ductile steel alloy, again for increased flexibility. Combined, the two parts work together to create a system with lower friction overall for better dropper post functionality. Note that Jagwire specifically says that this kit is not compatible with shifters – so it won’t be the answer to crazy internal routing for tri bikes and the like.

Dropper post specific cables? Jagwire Pro Dropper Kit makes it a reality

Sold as a kit for $19.99, the Pro Dropper cable kit includes the housing, cable, and necessary hardware – including two pieces of 0.8mm to 1.2mm heat shrink to use as a shim for certain dropper post/lever cable anchors. Not every dropper post/remote will need the shims, but some will need it to ensure a tight clamp on the smaller cables. These shims are apparently one time use only, so Jagwire includes two with the kit. In production now, the kits should start shipping in late May/early June.

Dropper post specific cables? Jagwire Pro Dropper Kit makes it a reality  It may seem like a bit of a departure for Jagwire, but the company is now branching out into bar tape as well. Their thought is that if you’re replacing your cables, you should probably be replacing your tape – and vice versa. By offering both, the company hopes that it may put both at front of mind when you’re doing your next routine maintenance.

Dropper post specific cables? Jagwire Pro Dropper Kit makes it a reality

But it also means that you’ll be able to get bar tape that perfectly matches your cable color. Jagwire is starting out with black, red, and white, but will expand to include all of their housing colors in the future – and they’re making sure that the colors of each batch sync up between the two.

Dropper post specific cables? Jagwire Pro Dropper Kit makes it a reality Dropper post specific cables? Jagwire Pro Dropper Kit makes it a reality

Built from a 3mm, 3 layer tape with a polyurethane outer, the tape was supposedly developed for just the right tacky feel in all weather conditions. Sold with a set of locking bar end plugs, the tape will sell for $37.99.

Finally, Jagwire announced that they would be doing a few new colors in their Elite Link cable kits – but as an annual limited edition. First up is this green kit that will be available soon as a limited edition version, and once it’s gone they’ll move onto a new color.

Surly has a new e-bike, and it’s actually pretty cool. Granted, those are words that I never expected to type, but it’s true. When you consider the purpose of the newest Surly, the addition of pedal-assist not only makes sense, but it seems like a perfect fit. That’s because the Big Easy is, you guessed it, an e-cargo bike. Essentially a Big Dummy (Big Dumm-E?) with a motor, the Big Easy does add a few important changes  to make for an even more capable and comfortable mega cargo carrier.

You might have read in the news yesterday that QBP is now the Official Service Partner for Bosch e-Bike Systems. Naturally, that announcement comes just before the launch of the Big Easy which is equipped to use the Bosch Performance CX mid-drive system. The chromoly steel frame has been updated with a lower standover height but a substantially taller head tube with the goal of making it easier to get the handlebars higher. The frames also add the ability to run an internal dropper post which makes getting on and off a loaded cargo bike easier, but also allows for riders of different heights to easily share a bike – handy if you plan to use a bike like this to replace a car with other members of your family.

Want to carry two full size fat bikes, plus a lot of gear? Sure, why not?

The bikes will ship with a single Bosch Powerpack 500 wh battery mounted to the downtube, but they’ll also include the mount and the wiring harness to add a second battery to the bottom of the frame. The addition of the second battery will drastically increase the range, which will vary substantially based on the amount of cargo you’re carrying, terrain, assist level, and pedaling style. Due to the extreme variables involved, giving a realistic range number is nearly impossible without a lot of information – which is why Bosch has put together this handy range calculator. The calculator will base the range off of factors like total bike weight, cadence, average speed, and more to give you an idea of potential range.

If you want to add the second battery, you’ll have to buy it yourself – with an expected retail price of $800-1,000 depending on the size. The good news though is that the Bosch downtube batteries are the same across many bikes, so they should be easy to find.

Surly wanted this to be classified as a bicycle rather than an S-Pedalec, so it is limited to 20 mph which puts it in the Class 1 category of e-bikes. Control of the modes is offered through the Bosch Purion display which shows whether you’re in Eco, Tour, Turbo, or E-MTB mode. The top button turns the system on, and the plus or minus buttons cycle through the modes. The bottom button allows you to access Walk Mode, which then by holding down the plus button will advance the bike without pedaling at a slow speed. However, in our test rides, Walk Mode didn’t really want to work – which could have been related to how heavy the bikes were, or the mix of cold and snow.

Speaking of weight, it wouldn’t really be a test of a cargo bike without appropriately heavy cargo. So at the start of the ride we made a detour to the liquor store to pick up some Frostbike supplies. Before I knew it, my bike was loaded down with two 24 packs of Coors, a few ciders for myself, water, a bunch of camera equipment, and a few other bits for good measure.

Between the pedal assist and the bike’s geometry, the substantial amount of weight was really only noticeable during quick changes in direction – and over speed bumps, potholes, etc. But even then, it was hard to appreciate just how heavy the entire bike was until you had to pick it up to maneuver it around deep snow banks in tight u-turns. Surly states that the bike itself checks in at about 80lbs unloaded (but with bags and rack). Add in a few hundred pounds of cargo, and you’ll probably be happy to have that motor when it comes to stop and go traffic. In terms of the rack itself, it has a maximum weight capacity of 200lbs of cargo. The weight limit for the bike, rider, and all racks is 400lbs total.

Who is this bike for?

Obviously, the Big Easy is for anyone looking to carry bulky or heavy cargo, and does so in a way that’s a bit easier/faster/more convenient than a traditional cargo bike. For Adam Scholtes and his family, that means dropping the kids off at school, riding to work across town, and then dropping it off at home where his wife may hook up one of their Surly Bill and Ted trailers to ferry furniture, deer heads, and other oddly shaped items across town (or vice versa).

Or… you can just as easily hook up a tow rope and give your friends a tow into jumps on skis, while carrying an adult human on the back to capture it on a GoPro (video coming soon). Like most e-bikes that I’ve ridden, the Big Easy is an absurd amount of fun. This one just happens to be able to carry 300 beers (apparently a true story).

Complete Bikes

While the bikes we rode during pre-Frostbike activities had a bit different spec with tires for the conditions and various accessories, the complete bikes will be built as shown above and will sell for $5,000 – in the USA only. That includes a cargo worthy build kit with things like four piston Tektro Orion brakes, a Cane Creek Viscoset upper damping headset tuned for the Big Easy, a SRAM GX/NX 1x drivetrain, and WTB i29 TCS rims built to Shimano 525 hubs with 32 spokes and Surly ExtraTerrestrial 26 x 2.5″ tubeless ready tires. It also includes the bag, rack, and kickstand.

The Big Easy will be sold in three sizes, each with 26″ wheels. As usual, I was on a medium bike which ended up with a substantial amount of exposed seat post for a 690mm saddle to BB measurement. That should make these frames pretty flexible as far as the fit – and easier to straddle at a stop light.

Available now.

Salsa’s tagline reads Adventure by Bike, so naturally their product tends to skew that direction. With their latest refresh of their cockpit component line, Salsa is adding to the adventure theme with bars that are better built for off and on road adventures – especially bikepacking.

FB18: Salsa offers three levels of cockpit parts w/ nod to bikepacking & adventure

One key change that you’ll see on the new carbon bars is a wider 31.8mm clamping section. Bars like the aluminum Cowchipper above have a 120mm wide section, but the carbon bars bump up to 140mm. Why? More room for stuff. Whether that’s aerobars for a Tour Divide attempt, or extra mounting space for a front bag system like the Salsa EXP Anything Cradle, the bars offer more real estate to clamp things down.

FB18: Salsa offers three levels of cockpit parts w/ nod to bikepacking & adventure FB18: Salsa offers three levels of cockpit parts w/ nod to bikepacking & adventure FB18: Salsa offers three levels of cockpit parts w/ nod to bikepacking & adventure

All of their bars are now offered in three levels as well – standard, Deluxe, and Carbon. The standard bars are made from 6061-T6 aluminum, while the Deluxe see lighter/stronger 7050-T6 aluminum with a polished center section. The carbon bars have been designed to be lighter, stiffer, and more comfortable, all while offering the extra bar space as mentioned. Salsa puts these bars through the ringer on the testing side as well, noting that the Cowchipper and Woodchipper carbon are tested to the same ISO 4210 mountain bike standards as their aluminum mountain bike bars since they’ll be subjected to the same kind of abuse.

While the exact weights weren’t given, Salsa said that the carbon bars should come in about 75g lighter than their aluminum counterparts. Pricing for the Cowbell, Cowchipper, and Wood Chipper is $50, $75, and $215 for standard, Deluxe, and Carbon respectively.

FB18: Salsa offers three levels of cockpit parts w/ nod to bikepacking & adventure FB18: Salsa offers three levels of cockpit parts w/ nod to bikepacking & adventure

It’s a similar story for their mountain bars, with the carbon versions getting an extra 20mm of mounting space in the center. Both the Salt Flat and Rustler rise bars will be available in both 750 and 800mm lengths, and in standard, Deluxe, and Carbon for $39, $69, and $140. Note that these bars have a slightly more aggressive sweep than most with an 11 degree backsweep and 6 degree upsweep, which felt surprisingly comfortable in the short time we had to check them out at Frostbike.

Salsa is filling out  their lineup with the Guide seatpost in standard, Deluxe, and Carbon, and two versions of the Guide stem. The seatposts are a fairly simple two-bolt head design with zero and 18mm offsets available and will be available in the standard three sizes for $50, $65, and $90. The Guide stems are the same that Salsa have offered previously, just with updated graphics and a $40 retail.

A fat bike rim here, a mountain bike rim there, maybe a few carbon forks for road and cross – for Whisky Parts Co., a complete component line hasn’t always been part of the picture. But that’s slowly changing. Wanting to create an entire product line that looks the part on a complete build of any brand of bike, Whisky has been hard at work with a huge range of new products. And while only a few of them trickled out for Frostbike 2018, expect many more in the near future.

In the past, when it came to rims Whisky really only offered mountain and fat bike options. But with the introduction of the 30 and 50d, Whisky is now certainly part of the skinny tire family. Easily recognized by the ‘d’ designation instead of ‘w’, the tag represents the rim depth of 30 or 50mm. Both feature an inner width of 19.5mm, 27mm outer, and a tubeless compatible hooked bead profile (capable of 110psi). Meant for 25-45mm tires, the rims are available in only 700c diameter with 24h drilling. Both the 30d and 50d sell for $449.99, and weigh 365g/470g respectively.

FB18: Whisky Parts Co. ages well w/ new carbon road rims, alloy parts, more

Along with road rims, Whisky is constantly increasing the number of carbon forks on offer. With 5 models last year, that’s bumped up to 11 at this point, and Whisky says 5 more are in development.

New models include the No. 9 RD+ fork which of course for road plus. Designed to clear a 650b x 47mm tire (or 700c x 38mm), the fork has a 383mm axle to crown measurement with a 51mm rake, tapered steerer, 12mm thru axle, and 140mm flat mount brake. Like other Whisky forks there are hidden fender mounts, and the fork comes in at 440g.

FB18: Whisky Parts Co. ages well w/ new carbon road rims, alloy parts, more

In the similar but different category, the No. 9 CX fork actually offers more tire clearance with 700c x 42mm or 650b x 50mm, but it has a longer 395mm axle to crown measurement and 45mm rake. Also featuring a 12 x 100 mm thru axle and 140mm flat mount brake with hidden fender mounts, the fork comes in at 450g and $499.99.

Keeping in the drop bar theme, Whisky was showing their new aluminum drop bar, the No. 7. The bar will be offered in two different flares, 12 and 24° which will be known as the 12F and 24F. Crafted from 7050 aluminum alloy, the bars will initially be offered in 38, 40, 42, 44, and 46cm widths.

Then there’s the new No. 7 aluminum seat post which will help round out their aluminum cockpit collection (not to be confused with the current No. 7 carbon post). Whisky mentions that in the future, they will have a full alloy and full carbon cockpit range. FB18: Whisky Parts Co. ages well w/ new carbon road rims, alloy parts, more FB18: Whisky Parts Co. ages well w/ new carbon road rims, alloy parts, more

The No. 7 post will be offered in the usual 27.2, 30.9, and 31.6mm sizes and in both straight or 18mm offset heads. The aluminum post will be $65 while the carbon post will continue to be available at $100.

If you’re lucky enough to live in a spot where both cycling and skiing are a way of life, there’s a good chance you already have a roof rack on your vehicle. And if you’re looking for a better way to carry your skis, Küat will soon have a new option for you. In typically beautiful Küat fashion, their new Grip ski carrier looks good enough that you may want to leave it on all year…

FB18: Küat gets a Grip on roof top ski racks FB18: Küat gets a Grip on roof top ski racks

To be available in 4 and 6 ski models, the Grip features a latch handle that should be easy to operate with gloves. Küat points out that these are true 4 and 6 ski racks, meaning that no matter what type or width of ski you’re carrying, they should be able to fit.

FB18: Küat gets a Grip on roof top ski racks

Along with the simple opening latch, the Grip also features a sliding tray which will make it easier to load and unload your skis from the side of the vehicle.

FB18: Küat gets a Grip on roof top ski racks FB18: Küat gets a Grip on roof top ski racks

The mounts use an adjustable cam buckle system that will clamp to most cross bars, and the kit will also include T-Channel mounts for the larger aero cross bars. Both the mounts and the ski rack are lockable with keyed-alike locks for additional security.

Built with extruded aluminum bodies, the Grip will be available in three colors – most likely those shown here. Available this fall, the Grip 4 will sell for $319, while the Grip 6 will be $349.

Thanks to the Orange Seal VersaValve kit, not having the right tubeless valve for your rim may be a thing of the past. First spotted at Eurobike late last year, the new valve kits are now available in both consumer and shop packs depending on your needs.

FB18: Orange Seal VersaValve kits cover all the tubeless valve bases

When it comes to valves, it’s all about that base. For the best seal, you need to use a valve base that interfaces well with the rim which is why there are a few different shapes on the market. The brilliance of the VersaValve is that this base is replaceable based on your needs.

FB18: Orange Seal VersaValve kits cover all the tubeless valve bases

Starting with the correct length valve body for your application (32, 48, 60, or 80mm), you then decide which base, or grommet, to slip on the valve. At that point, just install the replaceable valve core, place through the rim, and add the o-ring and aluminum nut to tighten it all down.

I’ve been using a set since Eurobike with zero issues – just a simple, light weight, perfectly executed seal.

FB18: Orange Seal VersaValve kits cover all the tubeless valve bases FB18: Orange Seal VersaValve kits cover all the tubeless valve bases FB18: Orange Seal VersaValve kits cover all the tubeless valve bases

Not only are the kits great for consumer who can just buy the length they need knowing that it will work on almost any rim, but the large kit should help with shops doing a number of tubeless conversions.

The individual valve kits include two valve bodies, four replaceable valve cores, two of each base grommet, o-rings, threaded nuts, RVC (removable valve core) tools, valve caps, and stickers. The 32 and 48mm kits sell for $24.95, while the 60 and 80mm kits are $26.95.

After a strong launch in 2017, Ketl Mountain Apparel is bulking up their line by lightening up for spring and summer. Looking to add some pieces for hotter climates than the original line, there are lighter shorts, sun protection jerseys, and liner shorts. But on the other side there are also new pieces for areas that aren’t quite so warm yet, but full winter gear just won’t do.

Pieces like the new Merino Jersey. Offered in both men’s and women’s (women’s is in the title image), the jerseys use a double face fabric for a ridiculously luxe feel. But more than feel, the merino wool inner layer helps with warmth while the polyester outer layer pulls moisture away from your body.

FB18: Ketl Mountain Apparel adds liner shorts, lighter shorts, & new jerseys for spring & summer

While men get a zippered chest pocket, the women’s pocket gets relocated to the back side of the jersey. Both men’s and women’s will sell for $90 in muted desert inspired color palette.

FB18: Ketl Mountain Apparel adds liner shorts, lighter shorts, & new jerseys for spring & summer

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the long sleeve UPF 50 jersey is meant for hot weather with a really light weight but sun blocking build. Offered in light colors for obvious reasons, the jerseys will sell for $85.

Ketl nailed it with their bib liners, but since not everyone wants bibs they’ll also have liner shorts moving forward. Built with the same materials as the bibs, the shorts feature wide, comfy grippers, a wide supportive waist band, and a Cytech MTB Performance 2 chamois. Offered in men’s or women’s, these will go for $115.

Keeping with the light weight summer theme, the new Lightweight Over Short is just that.

Made from a very light 4-way stretch micro rip-stop cordura fabric, the short also features a light weight waist with a two button elastic closure. There’s also laser cut belt loops if you need additional help keeping them up, and a standard front pocket with zippered rear. Look for these in April for $140.

iSSi pedals might have been founded on clipless, but they have thoughts on platform pedals as well. Specifically, they feel you have two options with flats. You can either make a pedal narrow and thin for obstacle clearance and light weight, or you can focus on pedal feel. The later usually involves a thicker pedal with a concave platform. That’s where the new iSSi Stomp XL lives.

FB18: Smash the pedals w/ new iSSi Stomp XL platform, and Flip III FB18: Smash the pedals w/ new iSSi Stomp XL platform, and Flip III

Starting with a large 120 x 112.5mm 6061 aluminum platform, the pedal builds in 5mm of effective concavity. Due to the pedal’s large size, iSSi recommends it for shoes that are US size 9 and above, hence the XL designation. In total there are 22 proprietary pins per pedal with 11 per side, featuring a flip fop design with one side shorter than the other. That allows you to customize the amount of grip with a 2mm allen key or small box end wrench.

Inside, you’ll find a full length chromoly spindle with two bearings on the outside of the pedal, and a nylon bushing on the inside. Spindle kits will also be available later this summer, though only as a replacement – not as a customizable length.

FB18: Smash the pedals w/ new iSSi Stomp XL platform, and Flip III FB18: Smash the pedals w/ new iSSi Stomp XL platform, and Flip III

Offered in four colors, the standard pedals feature a sandblasted matte finish in Black, Plum, Lime, or Blue. There’s also a limited edition finish which ends up shiny instead of matte for the same price. This sample came in at 466g per pair which is only 6g off claimed, and the pedals will sell for $115 and are available now.

Flip III

Can’t decide whether you want to clip in or ride flats? Then the iSSi Flip might be the answer – especially the new Flip III.

FB18: Smash the pedals w/ new iSSi Stomp XL platform, and Flip III

Really, very little has changed other than the pedal getting better grip on the platform side. Instead of the in-molded traction pins shown on the Flip II above, the III gains four new traction pins for more sure footed pedaling.

FB18: Smash the pedals w/ new iSSi Stomp XL platform, and Flip III

The pedals use the same +6mm chromoly spindles for better shoe clearance and three sealed cartridge bearings per pedal for smooth spinning. Coming in at 400g per pair, the pedals sell for $100 a pair and come in the same “groovy colors” as the Flip II.

Jagwire’s newest product is one of those things that’s actually been around for awhile – just on the OEM side. But once shops started replacing cables on internally routed frames that used the black hose like material, they started asking where they could get it for themselves. The end result is the introduction of Internal Housing Damper shop rolls.

FB18: Jagwire Internal Housing Damper silences frame rattles FB18: Jagwire Internal Housing Damper silences frame rattles

Just what is ‘Internal Housing Damper’? Essentially, it’s just a foam rubber hose that fits over most 4-5mm shift and brake housing and hoses. The damper is cut to fit, and placed inside internally routed frames to cut down on the noise from cables slapping the inside of the frame. It’s simple, effective, and light weight – and now, available for purchase. Well at least for shops. As it’s only available in a 10 meter roll, Jagwire expects this to be a shop only item, though if there is enough demand they’ll always consider other options. Look for this to be available in April.

FB18: Jagwire Internal Housing Damper silences frame rattles

In good news for disc brake bikes everywhere, Jagwire is making a running change to their brake cable lengths. Instead of 1.7m cables, all brake cables will be bumped up to 2m to ensure that there is enough length to reach the rear disc calipers on large bikes. The change applies to all levels and won’t affect the price.

FB18: Jagwire Internal Housing Damper silences frame rattles FB18: Jagwire Internal Housing Damper silences frame rattles

Jagwire also has a few new kits that should make brake work or customization easier, without having to buy kits that are too big or too small. Their Hydraulic Hose Fitting Mini Combo Kit includes olives and barbs for the most common SRAM and Shimano brakes with 10 of each for a reasonable price.

FB18: Jagwire Internal Housing Damper silences frame rattles FB18: Jagwire Internal Housing Damper silences frame rattles

The same goes for their End Cap and Cable Tips Combo Box – if you’re trying to bling out a customer’s bike, now you won’t have to buy individual colored kits to give it that extra flair.

Like clockwork, Problems Solvers was present at Frostbike with a new batch of solutions for the industry’s problems. For those who have ever struggled with a tubeless valve nut that just wouldn’t stay tight, the Super P-Nut was a great option – if your rim was wide enough.

FB18: Problem Solvers adds Big P-Nut for smaller rims, ReMatch I-Spec adapters, more

The Super P-Nut (on the right) was originally designed for fat bike and plus bike rims which have plenty of real estate for an oversized nut. On smaller rims however, the Super P-Nut can be a bit too super. The answer is the new Big P-Nut on the left which uses a similar concept of a large CNC machined 6061 aluminum nut that offers increased grip for easier tightening. Only this time, the base is tapered so the smaller footprint plays well with narrower rims.

FB18: Problem Solvers adds Big P-Nut for smaller rims, ReMatch I-Spec adapters, more

Sold in a pair with two universal tubeless valves and two Big P-Nuts, the kit sells for $20.

FB18: Problem Solvers adds Big P-Nut for smaller rims, ReMatch I-Spec adapters, more

Originally, the Problem Solvers Mismatch adapters were created to allow you to mis-match Shimano and SRAM parts, which is understandable. The ReMatch adapters however, highlight how silly some of these standards have become. Literally designed to allow Shimano’s own parts to work together, the adapters are a requirement if you want to use certain I-Spec parts with other I-Spec parts. There are now three generations of I-Spec, and since they don’t play nice together, Problem Solvers decided to force them to.

MSW

Over on Problem Solvers’ sister brand MSW’s side, there was a new Tool Hugger Bag which is sort of a bag/strap hybrid.

FB18: Problem Solvers adds Big P-Nut for smaller rims, ReMatch I-Spec adapters, more

Inside you’ll find seven elastic sleeves for tools, and CO2, while the wrap squeezes in a tube as well.

Sold as the wrap only for $21.99, the wrap is also available as part of a complete tool kit for $49.99.

Speaking of CO2, MSW is making some changes in their available options for CO2 cartridges. The brand first moved from 16g to 18g, and now they’re moving from 18g to 20g as the smallest available option – but the price remains the same. MSW said that with tires across the board getting bigger, there’s really no need for a smaller cartridge any more, and since most of the cost is in the cartridge itself, it made sense to upgrade.

The other cartridge MSW will be offering is a 38g for the largest volume tires.

Wide range, 1x gearing isn’t going away any time soon. Instead, it is slowly expanding into more and more affordable drivetrains. Sure, SRAM seems to be leading the way, but a number of other companies like MicroSHIFT are pumping out more affordable options. With their new XCD cassettes, you can get even more range for fewer dollars.

FB18: MicroSHIFT spins up new XCD 11-46t 11 speed cassettes

Compared to cassettes like their 10 speed 11-42, the new 11-46 uses 7075 T6 aluminum for the two largest cogs (40 and 46t). MicroSHIFT tells us that their manufacturing process stamps and forges the steel rings at the same time which ensures a strong, straight cog, while their Sliding Engagement Technology results in accurate shifting.

Available in two versions, the higher end CS-G113 model uses an aluminum spider to reduce the weight. The CS-H113 uses a spiderless design which results in a less expensive, but heavier cassette.

Offering 11-13-15-18-21-24-28-32-36-40-46 gear progression, the cassettes will sell for $60 for the spiderless CS-H113, and $100 for the lighter CS-G113, both available in April.

Along with updates to their Split Pivot full suspension range, Salsa also had a few other bikes to show off at Frostbike this year. Similarly to the full suspension bikes, the changes are mostly highlighted by spec and color change, but that may still be very welcome news depending on which bikes you’re looking at.

Salsa Randoms - New spec and colors for Timberjack NX, Woodsmoke NX, & Marrakesh
Salsa Woodsmoke NX 27.5+ $2,599

2018 Salsa Woodsmoke NX 27.5+

For their wild Woodsmoke hardtail, 2018 sees a new color and a new 27.5+ spec. By adding in a SRAM NX 1×11 drivetrain, Salsa was able to get the carbon framed bike in a 27.5+ build down to $2,599. That includes a RockShox Recon RL Solo Air 140mm fork, SRAM Level brakes, and Formula/WTB Xcraper i40 wheels with Maxxis Minion DHF 27.5 x 2.8″ tires. The frame continues as a jack of all trades 27+/29″/29+ ripper with the option of ultra short 400mm chainstays (depending on the tire choice), thanks to the adjustable Alternator Dropouts V2.0.

2018 Salsa Timberjack NX 27.5+

This version of the Timberjack gets a new color, but also a new combination of components with an NX build in 27.5+. The aluminum frame retains the Alternator dropouts, and goes with a RockShox Judy Silver TK Solo Air 120mm fork, SRAM NX 1×11 drivetrain, and Tektro hydraulic brakes for $1,099. The bike rolls on WTB Ranger 27.5 x 2.8″ tires on WTB Scraper i40 rims.

Salsa Marrakesh Deore $1,499

Salsa Randoms - New spec and colors for Timberjack NX, Woodsmoke NX, & Marrakesh

2018 Salsa Marrakesh

Salsa’s full featured world tourer stays in the line up for 2018, but only as a drop bar build – the flat bar option is gone. It also comes in a new dark blue colorway complete with a blue Brooks B17 medium saddle which looks great in person. The cromoly steel frame includes Alternator 1.0 dropouts and an Alternator 135 Low Deck rear rack, as well as three pack mounts on the steel fork. Built with a Shimano Deore 3×9 drivetrain (with Shimano bar end shifters), wider Maxxis Roamer 700 x 42mm tires, and WTB ST i19 rims, the Marrakesh is ready to travel the globe at $1,499.

2018 Salsa Timberjack Kids’

Salsa was also very excited about their new Timberjack Kids’ bikes which we recently covered here. Important details include specs that were carefully chosen based on the preferences of Salsa employee’s own children. The result is a 20″ and 24″ plus bike that are built to last, light weight, and most importantly fun to ride with real features like bottle cages, three pack racks, 1x drivetrains, and disc brakes. The bikes also include 110/141mm spacing and suspension corrected forks so you can actually upgrade them in the future if you’re so inclined. Most importantly, at $549 and $559, the prices aren’t outrageous and the bikes should hold their resale value quite well to make it easy to unload them after your kids out grow them.

Salsa’s Deadwood (formerly the Deadwood Sus) was certainly an interesting bike. A proper 29+ full suspension bike, the ride could be a bit polarizing depending on your geographic location and riding style. The massive 29 x 3.0″ tires offer insane amounts of grip and the traction and float to ride almost anything. Yet, their added weight and size meant that the bike was not as agile as a standard 29″ full suspension rig.

Salsa deadwood sus 29 plus full suspension mountain bike review-15
2017 Salsa Deadwood Sus with 29 x 2.6″ tires added

During our review of the original, I found that the original tires and wheels were perfect for trail systems like Santos down in Florida where sandy sections and fields of baby head rocks made you appreciate the extra float and cush. However, back home I ended up installing 29 x 2.6″ tires which offered a better overall ride for firmer, faster trails. The beauty of the bike is that it could run both depending on the situation and almost act as two completely different platforms.

Deadwood Carbon GX Eagle $5,099

Deadwood Carbon SLX $4,099

2018 Salsa Deadwood

For 2018, it seems that Salsa agrees and has decided to sell the Deadwood as a stock “29+” build with Maxxis 29 x 2.6″ tires. The frame and fork are still 29 x 2.2 – 3.0″ compatible, but if you want to truly go plus, you’ll have to provide your own tires (rims are still decently wide Sun Ringle Duroc 40s).

The other big change is up front at the fork. Like the original, the top end bike still has a RockShox Pike, but this time all of the forks squeeze out 120mm of travel instead of 100. However, it’s important to note that the forks have the same axle to crown length as the previous 100mm fork which means the geometry stays the exact same in spite of the extra travel. The rear stays at 91mm, though it’s fair to say that the Split Pivot suspension design makes that 91mm feel quite a bit longer than it really is.

Deadwood NX Aluminum $2,799

Salsa will be offering two Deadwood builds in carbon with the $5,099 GX Eagle (yellow), and the $4,099 SLX 1×11 (black), but most interesting might be the new Deadwood NX. Built with an aluminum frame, the bike has all the same specs as the carbon models, but thanks to a SRAM NX 1×11 drivetrain, RockShox Recon RL fork, and other affordable components, the price is just $2,799. Salsa pointed out that this was their first full suspension build that has come in under $3k, which is a pretty big deal. They also pointed out that all three builds have the same rear shock – a RockShox Monarch RT3 Debonair, so you’ll end up with the same rear suspension performance regardless of model.

Expect the new Deadwood series to show up this March.

Pony Rustler Carbon GX Eagle $5,099

2018 Salsa Pony Rustler

Moving on to the Pony Rustler, the bike is still the same beloved 27+ singletrack monster, just with a few new parts. Running 120mm/130mm rear/front travel, the bike comes stock with 27.5 x 3.0″ tires, though it is still compatible with 29 x 2.2-2.4″. In 2018, the top end comes with a SRAM GX Eagle kit on a carbon frame for $5,099.

Pony Rustler Carbon SLX $4,099

Next is the Pony Rustler Carbon SLX 1×11, which you guessed it, includes a carbon frame and Shimano SLX 1×11 drivetrain for $4,099. Suspension also drops from the RockShox Pike RC to a Revelation RC, though like the Deadwood all Pony Rustlers use the same Monarch RT3 rear shock.

Like the Deadwood, an aluminum version of the Pony Rustler drops in at $2,799 with a SRAM NX 1×11 drivetrain and RockShox Recon RL fork.

Redpoint Carbon GX Eagle $5,099

2018 Salsa Redpoint

Finally, the again keeps the same 150mm travel frame and moves to a 160mm travel fork (carbon models), but sees the tires grow – a bit. Still not really a plus bike, the new Redpoints will ship with 27.5 x 2.5″ Wide Trail Maxxis tires on 35mm inner width rims.

The top end is the Carbon GX Eagle model with a 160mm RockShox Pike RC fork, Monarch RT3 shock, and Guide R brakes for $5,099.

Redpoint Carbon SLX $4,099

You’ll notice a trend here, the second tier Redpoint Carbon is an SLX 1×11 build with a RockShox Revelation 160mm travel fork, Monarch RT3 shock, and Shimano Deore brakes for $4,099.

Redpoint NX $2,899

Bringing up the rear is the RedPoint NX, with a 150mm RockShox Recon RL fork, Monarch RT3 rear shock, NX 1×11 drivetrain and SRAM Level brakes for $2,899.

With a number of companies like Surly and All-City now offering their smaller sizes with 650b wheels and tires, the demand for quality rubber is certainly going to increase. The use of smaller wheels and tires for smaller bikes isn’t exactly a new concept, but with more brands settling on 650b for the selected size, it seems to have opened the door for brands like Clement to step in with new tire sizes.

Starting with the X’Plor MSO and Strada USH, Clement is rolling with a 650b x 42mm casing while 50mm tires are soon to come…

Offered in a tubeless ready casing, the 42mm MSO will retail for $70. Clement will soon have a 650b x 36mm MSO as well.

The MSO will also offered in a new 700c x 50mm casing for $75 which is a few months out. Te tread pattern is similar, but as you can see the larger tire has more widely spaced knobs while keeping the smooth rolling center section. As for the standard MSO 700c x 40mm, that will be available in a tubeless ready casing in two months.

The Strada USH also goes with a 650b x 42mm size again for $70. According to Clement, a 700c x 40mm USH is on the way.

For the street, Clement is making their LCV available in a skinwall as well as black wall in a 28mm 240tpi European made casing complete with undertread protection for $80.

Kids get in on the new tire action as well with a new 24 x 1.25″ MXP cross tire. Clement went with the MXP tread design because they say it is their most versatile and longest wearing which are both great features for a kid’s cross bike that won’t have multiple wheelsets for race day. Tubeless ready and featuring a 60tpi casing, the tires will sell for $55.

Adult cross bikes with little wheels (650b) will get an MXP of their own when Clement introduces the forthcoming 650b x 33mm MXP. When asked if the smaller wheels were UCI legal for cross, Clement said that there is no wheel size limit for cross, only a tire width limit. And since these measure the UCI legal 33mm, they should be good to go.

This year, Frostbike turned out to be more like de-Frostbike with temperatures in the low 60s. In this case, that turned out to be beneficial as the desire to get outside and soak up some of that sun exposed just how much the new paint on the Macho Man Disc really shines. For the most part, the big news from All-City is the addition of new finishes for their bikes, but there were also some additions in the form of smaller wheels and tires and new builds. But maybe most importantly, a few of these bikes also include lower price points making it easier than ever to be a part of the #partybrand…

Along with the stunning paint, the Macho Man Disc sees an all new build kit that gets rid of the front derailleur and goes 1x. Frame changes include the addition of rear rack mounts, and the addition of 43, 46, and 49cm frame sizes that will all come with 650b x 41mm Surly Knard tires. The larger sizes will all still include standard 700 x 33c tubeless ready Clement MXP tires.

To launch the new Space Horse Disc All-City put together a ridiculous loaded touring video which will have you loading up the rig and heading out to the woods to shotgun LaCroix in no time flat.

As for the bike itself, the Space Horse Disc sees another beautiful paint job and the addition of a SRAM Apex build which drops the price down to $1500. On the Space Horse Disc, the 43 and 46cm sizes also run 650b x 38mm tires and wheels, relying on the Vee Tire Co. Speedsters for both the smaller tires and the standard 700c. Vee Tire Co. tells us that these will also be available in 650b x 40 and 47mm and 700c x 40, 50, and 60mm sizes.

Finally, the Nature Boy disc keeps the single speed drivetrain but adds bright green paint and the same 650b sizes as the Macho Man Disc in 43, 46, and 49cm.

Also relying on the Surly Knard for the smaller sizes, the new Nature Boy Disc drops the price to $1150. All of the above should be available in April.

It seems that for almost every category, skinny tires are out. Whether we’re talking full on MTB or Road Plus sizes, or just larger rubber for your average road and mountain bike, big is beautiful. Not known for super wide tires, even Ritchey is getting in on the action with two new mountain bike treads that straddle the line between standard and Plus. Building on their previous tread designs, normal mountain bikes now have an option for a 2.4″ Trail Bite, while the Plus crowd can roll the new Z-Max EVO 2.8…

With an almost identical tread pattern to the Trail Bite 2.25″, the 2.4″ spaces the knobs out a bit father with slightly larger tread blocks. Available in 650b or 29 x 2.4″ sizes, the tires will be offered in 120 tpi WCS or 30 tpi Comp casings. The WCS version includes a tubeless ready bead, softer rubber, and their Stronghold bead to bead casing reinforcement.

To hit the smaller side of the Plus segment, the long standing Z-Max has gotten a 2.8″ upgrade. Labeled a 650b x 73mm, the Z-Max Evolution will be sold in the WCS 120 tpi casing that is tubeless ready with their Stronghold casing.

Introduced at Eurobike, the Z-Max Evo tires should be a great fit for their Trail 40 rims and wheels. Tubeless ready and 40mm wide externally with a 35mm internal width, the wheels will be offered with a few hub options for standard or Boost spacing, and include 28 spokes each with a claimed wheelset weight of 1950g.

Not far behind tires, the variety of rim widths is ever increasing. Slowly growing year after year, eventually they hit a point where they may have gotten too wide. Depending on the tire you’re using, that 40 or 50mm rim might actually be hurting the performance of your tire rather than helping it.

That’s why brands like Sun Ringle are filling out their lines with more options like the new Duroc 30 and 35s. And since they’re available in both 27.5 an 29″ versions, they’ll serve as great additions to a lot of bikes as durable, tubeless upgrades…

Similar to the other models in the Duroc line, the 30 and 35 use a double walled, welded rim that uses the Sun Ringle Tubeless Ready profile.

Labeled as 30 and 35, the internal widths come in at 27mm and 32mm respectively. Complete wheelsets are offered in both widths in 27.5 and 29″ sizes, each with 28 Wheelsmith straight pull DB14 spokes and brass nipples. Rim will also be available and in 28 or 32 spoke versions. The Sun Ringle SRX hubs are listed as Boost only for the front, while the rear has options for 135 QR, Boost or non Boost thru axles.

Prices are set at $129.99 for each rim, $239.99 for the front wheel, and $359.99 for the rear. As usual, wheels include tape, bottles of sealant, tubeless valves, hub adapters, and even XD drivers.

Hayes also had a new cutaway in the Manitou booth of one of their forks. In addition to showcasing some serious machining skills to cut windows into all of the tiny components, it also highlights their MRD IRT kit which is available as an upgrade for Mattocs and Dorados. The Infinite Rate Tune creates a secondary air pocket above the floating piston (top right) which can be tuned to alter the mid stroke of the fork independent of the bottom out. Looking at the internals of the air chamber (left leg, right side in the photo above), the negative chamber sits below the bottom white piston, the positive chamber lies in the middle, and the IRT chamber is at the top. Check out more on the IRT system here.

The next time you’re in need of new riding apparel, there’s a new option in town. Using Frostbike as their launch point, KETL Mountain Apparel represents a new take on mountain bike clothing, especially when it comes to Quality Bicycle Products (QBP). As the story goes, Lindsay Piper and Aaron James came to QBP from the outdoor world, where they both have been involved in the creation of new soft goods. According to the two, they felt that the outdoor industry offered constant innovation the design and materials used in clothing, while the bike industry seemed to lag behind.

That led them to look for a way to combine the best materials like Schoeller and Polartec, with industry leading fit and design features to create something they really wanted to ride. The result is the all new KETL Mountain Apparel line which is starting off relatively small, but with high quality pieces that you’ll want to wear again and again…

Featuring 100% gender parity in the entire line, KETL will initially offer two jerseys each for men and women. Made from Polartec Powerdry fabric in a simple henley style, women get a sleeveless and 3/4 length sleeve, while men get SS and LS.

The Overshirt uses Schoeller double weave fabric that offers four way stretch, and a water repellant outer layer. Snap fronts and snap cuffs handle the closures and a zippered chest pocket adds an audio port if you want to listen to music.

The Overshorts use that same Schoeller double weave fabric for a durable shell that is breathable, stretchy, and comfortable. Cut to work with or without knee pads, the front of the short opening is slightly longer, and the shorts include a zippered side pocket.

Just as much attention has been given to their liner bib which is again available in men’s or women’s specific models. The men’s bib has a fly opening out front, and three rear pockets as well as an Elastic Interface quad density chamois.

The women’s liner bib is where the real design work comes into play with their IPF feature. Adding their take on the bibs that you don’t have to completely remove if you have to pee, the I Pee Freely (IPF) design starts with a small zipper at the front of the bib. When unzipped, the entire panel pulls down and out, dropping the chamois completely out of the way. When you’re done, it tucks back in, zips up, and you’re ready to go. Lindsay says the design works great and is just as comfortable as a normal bib, just with the added convenience.

The women’s liner also has pockets, but two instead of three to fit smaller frames and retain useful sized pockets.

Starting with the essentials, KETL says more products are in the works, but this first batch will be in stores by March 15.

Update: KETL now has their pricing available below

  • Overshirts:  $185
  • Overshorts:  $160
  • M Long sleeve jersey: $100
  • M short sleeve jersey: $85
  • W ¾ sleeve jersey: $100
  • W sleeveless jersey: $85
  • Bibs: $150
  • Tee shirts: $30

Modern adventure bikes include a lot of braze-ons. If you need them, they serve as important attachment points for bottle cages, Anything cages, fenders, racks, and more. If you don’t need them though? It’s getting to the point where all those unused screws start to add up.

Sure, you could just remove them, but then you’re leaving a bunch of small holes open to the elements which probably won’t do much for your frame’s longevity. As usual, Problem Solvers is here with a solution. Their new rubber Bubs will fill those holes while also cutting down on the weight…

Made from rubber in a size to fit standard braze-on holes, each plug is 10mm long and according to PS – offers “dummy proof installation… probably.” That’s because you simply push them into the hole. The friction fit will hold them in place, but they can be removed in the future to use the braze-on if needed. Sold  for $7.99 in a bag of 10.

Problem Solvers is also getting into the Boost adapter game with their Boosters. The simple kits include rear and front specific adapters which include rotor and hub spacers. Since the spacers simply sit next to a non-Boost hub on the axle, the kit will work with any hub. The rear kit uses one 6mm spacer for the non-driveside and a 6mm spacer for the rotor with hardware. This requires the rear wheel to be dished 3mm to the non-driveside to compensate for the spacer.

The front kit instead uses two 5mm spacers, one for either side of the hub, and a 5mm rotor spacer with hardware. The kit also includes Torque caps for compatible RockShox forks. Both kits sell for $24.99 each.

A new addition to the MisMatch family, the 2.2 is designed to mount Shimano I-Spec II shifters to a SRAM Match-Maker brake lever clamp. Sold as a pair for $40, they are also available in right hand only.

QBP’s accessory brand MSW is always close by when Problem Solvers is around, and this year they were showing a few new flat packs which include a lot of what you will need in a mechanical. Priced at $49.99, you’ll get 2 18g co2 cartridges, an inflator head, three tire levers, 8 function multi tool, patch kit, and a 50 cu in. seat pack to store it in.

MSW also has a full new line of bar tape in multiple colors, and three styles. The standard EVA foam tape goes for $9.99, the Anti-Slip Gel tape adds a gel backing and PU gripper for $19.99, and the Anti-Slip Gel + adds a micro-fiber layer to the mix for their high end tape at $24.99.

The big news at Eurobike was that Stan’s had an all new wheel range. Called the S1 line, the wheels include their BST rims with WideRight profiles and Neo hubs, but more importantly they hit some impressively low figures in terms of pricing. Positioned somewhere between a replacement level wheel and a high end upgrade set, the S1 line drew a lot of attention after its introduction.

With dwindling assembly space at their New York headquarters due to increased demand, Stan’s needed a partner for S1 assembly. There aren’t too many outfits in the U.S. with the high output wheel building chops of QBP’s Wheelhouse, so partnering with QBP seemed like a natural fit. Taking on the assembly of all the S1 wheels and wheelsets in Minneapolis also allows QBP an exclusive on the new wheels, which is how you’ll end up finding them at your local bike shop…

Available in XC to Plus size widths (Crest, Arch, Flow, Sentry, Major, and Baron), S1 wheels use a 6061 aluminum double walled rim with eyeleted spoke holes, and a sleeved instead of welded joint (which is where the S in S1 comes from).

Built with Sapim butted spokes and Secure Lock brass nipples, the Neo hubs have end cap options for almost every axle configuration, and the hubs have a 36t drive ring with a 4 pawl free hub that can be upgraded to 6 pawl down the line.

Available in single wheels for replacement, or complete sets which will sell for $479 and come taped but do not include tubeless valves.

Frostbike 2017 wasn’t the launching pad of any radical new bikes for Surly, but it was a chance for some of the most loved models to get some updates. While bikes like the Cross-Check have remained relatively constant over the years, small spec changes and color options have kept them fresh. For 2017 that means the Cross-Check gets draped in a new rust/orangey paint job that goes by the name of Mule Mug. It also sees a few component changes to add to the overall look…

To go with the black bits on the rest of the bike, the Cross-Check now features a Shimano CX50 double crankset in black along with Alex Adventure 2 rims in black as well. Available now, the Cross-Check sells for $1099.

Prominently displayed at the front of the new Ogre is their chromoly steel adventure bar called the Moloko. This will become standard equipment on the Ogre, ECR, and Troll as is provides a wealth of hand positions while keeping plenty of room or bags and accessories.

The Ogre also moves to Surly’s Gnot Boost 145mm rear spacing for Boost or non-Boost hubs. Between rim and disc brake capability and more braze ons than you can shake a stick at, this should be one versatile bike for $1699 and will be available this April.

Little has changed with the Disc Trucker and the Long Haul Trucker, other than the fact that Surly is giving kickstands some love. Surly didn’t want to add a permanent kickstand plate to the frame, but there were enough people that end up putting them on the frame that Surly decided to take action. The problem is that the standard plate clamp style sold with most kickstands can crush the chain stays when overtightened. So Surly designed their own kickstand plate clamp that is shaped perfectly to fit the DT and LHT chain stays. The plate will be included with each bike allowing the option for kickstand use if desired.

Finally, Surly bags see a new addition with the Petit Porterhouse. Sized perfectly for an 8 pack of tall boys, the bag has double pockets on one side and one larger pocket on the other. Using the same construction and strap system as its bigger brother, the Petit can be mounted sideways or longways on front racks depending on your set up. Pricing and availability TBA.

At the 2016 edition of Frostbike, Civia started its rebirth. In the past, the brand had focused on bikes for all sorts of urban riding with a unique, stylish flare. That’s still the focus of Civia, only with bikes that are a lot more affordable. After introducing the Lowry last year, Civia was showing their second new model at Frostbike 2017 called the Venue. Designed to be a little more fitness oriented than the Lowry, the Venue still has the Civia look and comes in two builds and multiple sizes to fit a range of riders…

Built around a classically styled aluminum frame, the Venue is a flat bar fitness or city bike that can be had in one of two builds. The green bike above features a 1×8 drivetrain which goes for $479.

The second option is a 3×8 24 speed drivetrain that raises the price to $519. Both bikes are rim brake equipped, use threaded forks with old school negative quill stems, though they add riser bars to get the riding position up a bit.

Offered in 5 sizes from XS-XL, the XS and S sizes are based around 26 x 1.5″ wheels and tires. All other sizes utilize a 700 x 35c wheel and tire combo. Available in early May, there will be four total color options with each build in two separate colors.
