Thule’s slogan is ‘Bring Your Life.’ Dogs are certainly a big part of a lot of people’s lives, and now you can bring them too – thanks to the new Thule Bexey dog trailer.

Thule Bexey dog trailer

Introduced on the first day of Eurobike 2023, the Bexey joins a substantial revamp of the Chariot child trailer, a new Paramount backpack pannier bag, and the new Epos rack which we saw a bit earlier in the year. All of these products still have substantial time until they hit the market, but we got some first looks at early samples from the show.

Part of a complete new category for dogs, the Bexey will be joined by dog crates (September 23) and harnesses to make it easier than ever to bring your pup out on your next adventure.

New Thule Bexey Dog trailer

To create the Bexey trailer, Thule enlisted the help of dog experts to create a product that was not only easy for humans to use, but something canines would quickly become used to as well. That includes a 3D molded floor that can be made completely flat for training your dog to get comfortable with the idea of riding in a trailer. The Bexey will be available to consumers somewhere around this time next year.

New Thule Chariot

New Thule chariot 2024

Over on the human child side of things, the Thule Chariot trailer has gotten a massive redesign with some very interesting features. The new design is said to be around 95% new, and is intended to make it easier to use, more comfortable for the child, and more visible (safe) for everyone involved.

Starting with the attachment of the trailer to the bike, the new quick release mount makes it easier than ever. The mounting plate stays on the bike, and the tower basically just snaps into place when you line the two up. To remove it, just press the grey button and slide upwards. There’s still a lock core so you can secure the trailer to the bike, and a new shock cord safety tether.

At the other end, the tow bar easily clicks into the trailer frame and there’s another lock core to again prevent theft of the trailer when parked. One of the big improvements to the design is how the stroller wheels are stowed – you no longer have to remove them to flip them over. Now simply open the quick release lever, spin them 180º, and fasten the QR. The design will make it a snap to go from stroller to trailer mode, and you are never without the stroller wheels.

Another huge improvement is the option to run just one or two seats in the same trailer. Previously, if you were only using the trailer for one child, the empty seat couldn’t be removed, so you ended up with a child sitting to one side making a bit cramped and unbalanced ride. Now, you can simply remove the second seat, and position the remaining seat in the center giving better weight distribution, and more elbow room for the child.

Finally, in the age of the distracted driver, every bit of increased visibility matters. The new design features an elegant integrated LED light that stretches across the entire back of the trailer.

Like the Bexey, you’ll have to wait for the new Chariot to arrive with Canada seeing them around March 2024, and the US getting them later in 2025.

Thule Paramount Pannier Backpack

On the bag side, the popular Thule Paramount backpack is getting a pannier upgrade. We’ve seen a few different pannier/backpack combinations, but the trick is always how to make it comfortable as a backpack, and yet still functional as a pannier. The Thule Paramount does that with a brilliantly designed removable backplate with backpack straps on one side, and a locking pannier mechanism on the other.

To swap back and forth, there is a single zipper that unzips the top half of the back plate, while the bottom slots into a socket on the bag. When it’s flipped to pannier mode, there is an additional buckle strap to anchor the bottom of the bag against the rack. The Paramount uses the same pannier hardware as the Thule Shield which includes a clamp that actually grips the bar on the rack to prevent any rattling, and is compatible with 8-16mm diameter bars.

The Paramount Pannier also includes a full size rain cover that is reflective to keep the contents dry, and yourself visible. Expect to see these in stores around August this year.

It’s already been a big year for Thule, and there’s more in the pipeline. Stay tuned.

Eurobike is back tomorrow, returning for 2023 in its second iteration in downtown Frankfurt, Germany. Saddle up with Bikerumor as we dive deep into the trade show halls to see what new bike tech we can uncover. We’re always searching for true next-gen innovative technologies – and there’s certainly been a lot of focus on the growing ebike market. But it’s not all ebikes, we’ve already spied new road wheels, new gravel bike updates, new mountain bike tires, new tools, new kids’ bikes, and much more.

Buckle up, there’s a lot of new bike tech on the horizon…

Eurobike 2023 tech teasers from Frankfurt

Eurobike 2023: What's new in bike tech at the cycling industry's biggest trade show? outdoor expo
all photos by Cory Benson, c. Bikerumor.com

The cycling industry still feels like it’s in a transition out of a few years of unpredictability, so we’re not sure exactly what to expect. And again, the show is in a slightly different time of year – pushed a few weeks earlier this time, maybe better aligned with bike companies’ purchasing schedules for next year?

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, What's next?

What we do know is that a lot of gear has been in the development pipeline for a while, and it’s itching to hit the market. But rumor has it that many bike companies have a lot of extra products still waiting to be sold, so there’ll likely be a number of products we had seen hints of before that are actually finally available to buy now.

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, Rotwild RX100 Pinion-powered eMTB

We’ve received a bunch of embargoed news in the past week or so that is scheduled to go live on Wednesday. And there’s already been plenty of early pre-Eurobike launches – like Bosch’s new lightweight SX ebike motor, Pinion’s potentially revolutionary ON.E ebike motor and gearbox combined into one, last week’s debut of SRAM affordable 12-speed Apex XPLR/Eagle/AXS.

So what’s new? What’s coming soon?

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, Merida behind boxes

Frantically pulling bike boxes out of moving vans, UPS & DHL deliveries coming down to the wire, furiously building bikes and expo stands… most brands aren’t quite ready. But we spotted some goodies…

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, Aero Design Swiss track bikes

Like this new ultra-aerodynamic carbon track bike from Aero Design Swiss. We’ve been following this small company since they debuted a wildly adjustable aero cockpit setup six years ago. And it looks like their track bike concept has become real, now that UCI frame and fork regulations have relaxed in recent years.

Will this be ready for the Paris Olympics? We’ll find out this week.

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, Magura CBS combined braking system

More and more braking systems have evolved in recent years to improve rider safety. This latest one for cargo bikes is Magura’s new CBS combined braking system, where both brake levers activate both front & rear brakes in an optimized ratio designed for maximum stopping power and maximum safety.

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, a dirty Moustache ebike prototype

OK, I’m a sucker for a no photos sign – it is after all why journalists are allowed to enter the tradeshow. But even better than the no pictures please pictogram under this Moustache bikes integrated mid-drive gravel ebike prototype… the handwritten sign asking the event cleaning crew to please DO NOT CLEAN their dusty display bike.

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, a new 3T Exploro Ultra Italia

Here’s a sneaky sneak peek. Notice anything special about this new 3T Exploro Ultra gravel bikepacking and adventure bike? 3 important bits:

 1. It is actually labeled as an Exploro Extrema Italia, which means a new model name AND that it is made-in-Italy with 3T’s unique automated fiber winding construction.
 2. It has no visible cables. So far, only the 3T Strada road bike has gotten a fully-internal routing option thanks to wireless-only drivetrains needing just to route the brake lines inside.
 3. That’s also a new 3T stem that cleanly routes those brake lines into the frame. The smooth shaping suggests it might be carbon, and a tiny Italian tricolore flag on top suggests it is also made in-house by 3T.
Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, IGUS recycling

What does Re-cycling mean for Igus, makers of a lot of the bushings that go into your bikes?

Igus has been working with other cycling industry producers to create more bike components that are made of recyclable and recycled plastics in an effort to lower the carbon footprint of the bikes we all ride. We’re curious to see how they are getting along.

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, Riese & Muller subscription service

A premium Riese & Müller commuter ebike or cargo bike is expensive. So the German brand is introducing a subscription service – where for around 100€ a month you essentially lease the ebike you need including a service program – all without having to buy what are often 6-10,000€ setups. Then, you can always swap out to a new version when your needs change.

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, new Unior tools

I’m also a sucker for new tools. Unior has more than a dozen bits labeled as ‘NEW’ on the wall of their workshop. It looks like 2 out of 4 of these are for opening beers while working on bikes. I don’t disagree with that as a worthwhile function.

But I’ll check out what other functional bike tools are new too, since I’m pretty sure I can already open a beer with either those pliers, zip-tie nips, or even that BB wrench.

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, li:on kids bikes presented by Marcel Kittel & Tony Martin

What do two of the most successful recent road racers to retire do when they hang up their cleats?

For Marcel Kittel & Tony Martin, it’s developing bikes to make sure their kids and yours stay safer when they ride. Their new li:on brand of kids’ bikes feature integrated high-visibility lighting, retroreflective paint, and tech meant to communicate with active collision avoidance systems in modern cars. Plus, the bike is made of recycled AND recyclable carbon composites, and they are built tough to survive the abuse that kids put their bikes through.

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, pulling an Airstream with a Benno ebike

OK, we all need an ebike to pull our Airstream trailer, right? If so, Benno bikes has got you covered. Remember, aluminum Airstreams are light.

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, TRP MTB drivetrain groupset

How about some new mountain bike drivetrain tech?

We first covered the complete TRP EVO 7-speed & 12-speed MTB groupsets back in March. Now it looks like they are finding a bit more traction, and we’ll see what bikes spec the all-new shiny gold drivetrain for the coming year.

Eurobike 2023, the largest cycling industry trade show, Gas Gas eMTB

Gas Gas may be a moto brand for many, but as part of the Pierer group that also includes Husqvarna, KTM motorcycles (but not bikes or ebikes), and also Felt… they’ve now got some well-developed eMTBs too.

Eurobike 2023: What's new in bike tech at the cycling industry's biggest trade show? Start-up Area still under construction

OK, let’s leave it at that. There are still plenty of empty spots to get filled out in the next few hours. The show officially kicks off Wednesday.

There will be a lot of new tech to delve deeper into in the coming days and weeks ahead.

Stay tuned. Maybe even follow our Eurobike tag for the latest hits as they drop.

Schwalbe has today launched the Green Marathon bicycle tire, 70% of which is made from recycled and renewable materials. In this bold move toward a circular economy, the brand claim it is the first bicycle tire that “closes the loop” – the recycled tire itself being recyclable at the end of its usable life. As compared to its predecessor, production of the Green Marathon is said to require 34% less CO2.

wolfgang reiche motobecane around the world touring bicycle
The Schwalbe Marathon has stood the test of time. Wolfgang Reiche’s Motobecane rolled on multiple prototypes of the Marathon over the course of his 73,000 km trip around the world. His feedback was key in helping Schwalbe develop such a durable tire with reliable puncture protection.

In a state-of-the-art pyrolysis process that takes place in Germany, Schwalbe is taking discarded tires – be they bicycle or automotive – and breaking them down into their constituent components ready to be reformed into new Green Marathon tires.

The recovered materials are then shipped to Vietnam and Indonesia where they are used to produce the Green Marathon. Even with this extra step of shipping, the overall carbon footprint is reduced as compared to that of the outgoing Marathon.

The Green Marathon is currently the only Schwalbe tire produced in this way. However, it being the brand’s best-selling tire of all time, it seems a great place to start in reducing impact on the environment.

And, they’re not stopping at the Marathon; Schwalbe plans to roll out this more socially and environmentally responsible approach to tire production to more of its bicycle tires in future. For now, let’s take a closer look at the Green Marathon, and the steps required to produce this first-of-its-kind recycled tire.

schwalbe green marathon
There is a 34% CO2 saving associated with production of the Green Marathon versus the outgoing model. To determine that percentage, Schwalbe say a detailed Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of both models was calculated and evaluated according to the common IPCC AR6 standard (GWP 100, excl. biogenic CO2). Schwalbe will be publishing a document that details this assessment after EuroBike.

Schwalbe Green Marathon

Schwalbe Marathon fans will note that the switch to this greener manufacturing process comes with a significant tread pattern update. While the outgoing Marathon saw a slick center tread cap, the Green Marathon is more textured in this region, offering up more edges to bite into softer terrain. Despite this, we are told the Green Marathon is in fact slightly faster rolling than its predecessor.

schwalbe green marathon tread pattern

The Schwalbe Green Marathon is intended for a wide variety of bicycles, from touring bikes to urban commuters and eBikes. With its launch, new sizes are added to the line-up, including higher volume options that are better suited to eBikes.

schwalbe green marathon ebike tire recycled

So, what is it made of?

Seventy-percent (by weight) of the Schwalbe Green Marathon is produced from recycled and renewable materials. But, what does that really mean?

Let’s break it down.

We first got wind of Schwalbe’s intention to produce a recycled tire back in March, when they announced receipt of a supply of recycled carbon black (rCB) from their recycling partner, Pyrum Innovations AG. Carbon black is used as a pigment and reinforcing phase in tire manufacturing, but its manufacture is environmentally damaging – it comes from the incomplete combustion of coal and coal tar. So, isolating this essential component from old tires is preferable, from an environmental standpoint, to continuing its production from fossil fuels.

Schwalbe Recycling System rCB in transit
Big bags of rCB collected from Pyrum Innovations AG, ready to be used in the production of the Schwalbe Green Marathon. The pyrolysis of rubber from old tires takes place in Germany. The recovered products – such as the rCB – are then shipped to Vietnam where the Green Marathon is manufactured.

The Green Marathon’s new Addix ECO rubber compound is the first production tire from Schwalbe to contain the rCB from Pyrum Innovations AG – 100% of its carbon black is rCB.

The rubber itself consists of a combination of natural virgin rubber, as well as recycled rubber, while the silica – an important filler necessary for grip in wet conditions – comes from rice husk ash. That latter aspect does not compete with food production. We are told the rubber is 98% pollutant-free – what that 2% is, we are yet to learn.

One third of the Green Marathon’s puncture protection belt, GreenGuard, is made from recycled latex products, while the the other two thirds are Fair Rubber. Finally, the bead core wire is made of recycled steel.

Despite use of such a large proportion of non-virgin rubber, the Schwalbe Green Marathon is said to be equal in performance and durability to the not-so-green Marathon that it replaces.

cyclists riding schwalbe green maratjon eco friendly recycled bicycle tire
So far, Schwalbe has recycled around 400,000 tires to date.

“The Green Marathon combines innovation and environmental friendliness on a new level. It is the result of years of research work that we have carried out together with our production partner Hung-A. We at Schwalbe are immensely proud to be able to present a model on the 40th anniversary of the popular Marathon that represents a milestone in terms of ecological responsibility. And most importantly, the Green Marathon doesn’t compromise on performance in any way and continues to lead the way in puncture protection and mileage”.

Frank Bohle, CEO of Ralf Bohle GmbH, the company behind Schwalbe

What about the remaining 30%?

The remaining 30% of the Schwalbe Green Marathon tire is virgin material, i.e. new rubber that does not come from a recycled source. To source this in a socially responsible manner, Schwalbe work with fairrubber.org, an organization that ensures the South East Asian communities working to harvest the raw material – latex – from the rubber trees, get more money for their work.

Money that comes from Schwalbe – an extra 0.50 € per kilo of natural rubber – is paid to the farming communities responsible for harvesting the raw material from rubber trees at the very beginning of the supply chain. The money doesn’t go directly into the pockets of individuals – rather, it goes to community cooperatives that appropriate the funds as they see fit – the building of new schools, for example.

schwalbe green marathon recycled bicycle tire

“Taking responsibility is a natural part of our business. We are a family-owned company. We are operating within the cycling industry and, as most of us know, the bicycle promotes an efficient, healthy and emission-free mobility. So, we think it is our job, our duty, to make the bicycle as socially and environmentally responsible as possible. Some of these initiatives include the well-being of our employees and their families, the higher fair working standards in our supply chain. And of course, part of the reason why we are here today; products that are circular and as eco-friendly as possible”.

Felix, head of the Corporate Social Responsibility Team at Schwalbe

Clearly, there is a huge amount of information to be unpacked here, particularly around the details of the recycling process and the logistics of production. Overall, this appears to be a good step in the right direction toward more sustainable tire production, and we hope other tire brands and manufacturers will take note.

As we head into EuroBike week, time is short. We hope to bring you a more detailed explanation of the process, with a background to Schwalbe’s decision-making around this new eco-friendly approach, in due course. For now, we leave you with a quick Q&A session that was held following the press conference.

Bikerumor: Can the Schwalbe Green Marathon be recycled at the end of its life?

Schwalbe: Yes.

Bikerumor: What is the limit in terms of the quality of the rubber that you can produce from the recycling process, in terms of performance?

Schwalbe: Honestly speaking, the limit right now is unknown. We are in the middle of research and development, and what we are presenting today is a tire that lasts just as long as the old Marathon, which is known to last for thousands and thousands of kilometers. In the background we are also testing tires for other segments as well. Hopefully we will be able to show you more in the future.

Bikerumor: How are you controlling the consistency of the final product, when there must be such a large variation in the batches of recycled tires that you receive to begin the process?

Schwalbe: That is the great challenge when you use recycled materials. With virgin materials, you have one input and one consistent output. With recycled materials, we have many different varying inputs, which can lead to different outputs. So, we have quality controls on our side. We have to say, our recycling partner, Pyrum Innovations, have done a lot of investment and development in showing that we have one continuous constant output, so that we don’t have any changes in quality in our output.

Bikerumor: Is there much waste along the way? Do you have to discard a certain proportion of the tires you are given to recycle because they don’t meet a certain quality, or does everything go in?

Schwalbe: Some tires – like some spike tires, we currently can’t recycle. But this is also something that we are working on right now so that all tires can be recycled.

Bikerumor: Is the final rubber compound slightly different in its properties to the compound on the outgoing Schwalbe Marathon?

Schwalbe: It is nearly the same. There is a slight difference in rolling resistance, but it is only slightly better. The durability is the same. So we tested – this is quite interesting – more than any other product we have launched yet. We tested it in practice of course, we tested it in our laboratory too.

We also made so-called segment tires, where we had the tread pattern of the Green Marathon tire, with the compound of the old Marathon on one half and the compound of the Green Marathon on the other half. Then we tested it on daily commuters for 40,000-50,000 kilometers – then we analysed the tire. So we can say performance wise, and the durability of the tires, is quite the same as the old one.

Pricing & Availability

Price of the Green Marathon tire is equivalent to that of the outgoing model; there is no financial penatly associated with the switch to a more environmentally conscious manufacturing method – at least not one that is passed onto the consumer.

Ditch the car and Haul Stuff Daily. That’s what urban mobility specialists, Tern Bicycles want you to do with the new, completely reworked Tern HSD compact cargo bike. This newly upgraded HSD is now equipped with the Bosch Smart System

Since its first appearance, back in 2019, the Tern HSD has helped families and businesses around the world replace their car trips with bike trips. The new HSD keeps its small stature and many convenient features but is now both stronger and smarter.

Tern HSD Cargo bike near water

The HSD is for the people who want the hauling capacity of a cargo bike, in a package that is much easier to ride and easier to handle“, stated Josh Hon, Tern Team Captain. “This new generation HSD adds improvements based on feedback we’ve collected from riders and our own team over the last 4 years. Plus, the new Bosch Smart System is a fantastic upgrade in pure power and also electronic smarts“.

The HSD is Just Right

Most traditional cargo-specific bikes are large, heavy and for some, tough to navigate. Whereas a typical “city” eBike is smaller, lighter, and easier to handle with the trade-off being that they don’t offer much in cargo capacity.

Tern HSD Cargo bike doing cargo stuff

HSD comes in and saves the day for the riders that want all of the benefits of a cargo bike in an easy-to-ride, compact package. Shorter than a regular city eBike, and capable of carrying a max gross weight of 397lbs (180kg), the HSD is just right.

Brains and Brawn

Tern HSD Cargo bike hauling a friend

Tern says that HSD’s new aluminum frame is 15% stiffer at the head tube and 39% stiffer at the bottom bracket. An upgraded rear rack has also been upgraded, and now can carry up to 176 lbs (80kg). That means you could carry an adult passenger, and that the HSD will ride smoother and handle better when hauling a heavy load.

Tern HSD Cargo bike Bosch Performance motor

With Bosch’s latest Performance Line motor, the new HSD delivers up to 50% more torque than the previous generation of HSD. That translates to easier climbing up hills, even when fully loaded.

Your Phone is Command Central

The Bosch’s new Smart System your smartphone becomes the hub to control all aspects of the HSD, from electronic locking and unlocking, to tuning the motor’s performance. You can also track your location, and update using over-the-air firmware updates.

Then there’s the Flow app’s ability to track fitness data like calories, heart rate, and watts. You can also map your cycling routes while integrated with other apps like Strave or Komoot.

HSD S-Class models include the Bosch ConnectModule that provides enhanced security features, like motion sensors, a high decibel alarm, push notifications, and GPS location tracking.

Fitting your Needs

In addition to the new upgrades, your HSD still has all of the features that Tern cargo bikes are known for…

Tern HSD Cargo bike stores upright in small places
Verticle parking
 • Verticle parking: The HSD can stand upright, making it easier to go into elevators and small spaces like apartments.
Tern HSD Cargo bike trunk loading
 • FlatFold: Expanding your travel range, the HSD’s seat post lowers and handlebars fold to fit into an SUV or train compartment
Tern HSD Cargo bike DarkSage Cockpit
 • Adjustable cockpit: You can resize your HSD in seconds without tools, making adjusting to fit riders 4’11” to 6’5″ a breeze.
Tern HSD Cargo bike mom and child
 • Accessory Ecosystem: You can outfit your HSD with one or many of the wide range of modular accessories to match your specific needs.
 • Ready for business: The HSD is built to last and to carry heavy loads, making it a great alternative for businesses, whether as a delivery vehicle, part of a larger commercial fleet, or as a lil’ side hustle.

Safety First

Tern wants to ensure a reliable ride, day after day. So, the HSD is made to withstand the already demanding German standard for cargo bikes (DIN 79010:2020-02). All of the structural components as well as the frame and fork have been tested for durability and strength at EFBE Prüftchnik – one of Europe’s leading bicycle testing labs. Here, that uses a custom testing protocol that builds upon this standard but adds even stricter requirements.

The Bosch Motor System has also been tested and certified to the UL 2849 safety standard for protection against potential fire hazards.

Safety is so critically important with cargo bikes, especially if you are using them to carry your kids,” stated Hon. “Yet there are no mandatory cargo bike test standards—and we see lots of brands claiming really high loading weights. The best thing out there right now is the German Cargo Bike standard, and that’s why we’ve worked with EFBE to create custom tests for our bikes that are based on that new standard“.

Features, Models, and Colors

Tern HSD Cargo bike Rear brake light
 • RearStop Brake light: This light activates when you press on the brakes to slow to a stop. It remains on always, day or night.
Tern HSD Cargo bike headlight
 • Ignis Headlight: A 700-lumen light that casts a strong and wide beam providing extra visibility when riding after dark or in inclement weather. Also has a one-touch high/low beam, putting more light at your fingertips.

I have a confession… I love me some Ronnie Romance (aka Turbo Romance, Ultra Romance, Papi, or Ultranicus). His ability to not take himself or cycling too seriously is refreshing to me. I like his whole deal, from his bike’s aesthetics to his actual philosophy on riding and cycling culture. His ability to take all of it and apply it to the unique products he’s been having made and selling through Ron’s Bikes and Ultradynamico has been fun to watch as it grows.

A while ago I wrote a piece on Ron’s new cycling shoe collaboration with Stomp Lox. The SPD-compatible bicycle shoe was called Slack. It was a cycling shoe that sported a nice alternative look when compared to a typical cycling shoe. Plus it looked like it had a nice, wide-toe box… I really dug the looks of it and wanted to try a pair.

Unfortunately, Ron wasn’t able to send over a pair of the brown top grain model for me to review but was able to introduce me to Mamyia at Stomp Lox Japan directly to get a pair of the olive suede style sent over to me to try out.

Note: The version of the Stomp Lox Slack that’s sold through Ron’s Bikes is made exclusively for them in Japan, and comes in sizes 8 through 13. Ron’s Bikes version has the LeRon Tulip label on the tongue and comes with brass hardware. The version of the Slack that I got directly from Stomp Lox is made in China, and doesn’t have brass hardware, or the tulip label, and only comes in black suede or olive suede.

Slack Out of the Box

When I received the Slack and opened the box, I found that the shoe looked much narrower than the photos. They were packaged well and arrived undamaged. I was surprised that the shoes didn’t come with a rubber “block” or cover for the cleat area, in case you didn’t want to use them to clip in.

The Slack is made of durable genius suede cow leather for the outside of the upper and uses a breathable, wear-resistant pigskin on the inside.

Vibram sole.

These shoes are compatible with any 2-bolt cleat system, come with cleat plates, and are pre-laced and ready to roll. The Vibram sole seems to be a nice touch and looks thick and durable. The suede is not waterproof and Stomp Lox suggests that they should be sprayed with waterproofing spray before use.

I received the Slacks way back in February and have finally gotten through some other reviews and was able to slip these on and take them for a first ride.

The Slack’s First Few Rides

Stomp Lox Slack Bicycle Shoe on the Gus
Slacks in action!

One of the things that attracted me to these shoes, besides their looks, (I love the way they look like they just walked off the Dolomites circa 1966), was the wide-toe box and laces. I honestly hate the way most cycling shoes feel on my feet. It’s one of the reasons I had switched to flat pedals, after 25+ years of riding clipping in

The traditional cycling shoe is like everything else the bike industry offers in wearable goods, they seem to be made with only smaller individuals, who race, in mind.

The Slack has a medium stiff sole which has proven good for on or off-the-bike walking as well as the few hike-a-bike sections I have in my riding area.

I ordered the USA 11, and the fit seems pretty true to size. They hold my foot snugly without having to crank down on the laces to tighten them. On the first few rides, I noticed zero heel lift and no hot spots on my foot.

The Slack’s full leather upper and supple pigskin made them really comfy right out of the box. I would imagine that the shoes may stretch, making the shoes even more comfortable as they get worn in.

Stomp Lox Slack Bicycle Shoe Used vibram sole
The Slack’s grippy Vibram sole is replaceable.

The Slack’s Vibram sole is part of Stomp Lox’s Power Ride Core System. This is a system that offers the “perfect balance of stability and flexibility”. Stomp Lox says the Vibram sole is also replaceable.

Upon my initial impression and the first few rides, the shoes checked all of the boxes for me.

They’re comfy right out of the box, they have a great non-traditional look to them, they’re made with quality material and they have laces, which I feel are infinitely more adjustable than other fastening systems for varying foot sizes and needs.

Stomp Lox Slack Bicycle Shoe black chrome
Again, no brass hardware. Seems to be good craftsmanship.

They’re really quite comfortable off of the bike. They seem to be made well, which is to be expected with the lofty price tag. Overall they seem to be a great pair of bicycle shoes. We’ll see how they continue to perform when we get into more detail in my full review in the next few months.

Right off the bat, I will tell you that I had never heard of Ekrin Athletics when they reached out to me to review the Bantam, their new mini-massage gun. My initial reaction was not to review it, but then I thought that you all probably use a massage gun of some sort, as I do, and maybe this is a nice device. So I said yes to the review request. Plus my latest Amazon special massage gun had just given up the ghost a few weeks earlier.

We who ride the bicycle know that muscle recovery is important, and I am not a stranger to the benefits that a massage gun can offer. But, I didn’t know that much about Ekrin Athletics, so I did a lil’ homework to get familiar with the company.

According to the Ekrin website, they have a lot of professional athletes using their products, from the WMBA, and NHL, to the NFL. I didn’t see any cyclists though, which I felt was a little surprising.

Do massage guns work? They seem to, I’ve personally found benefits while using a massage gun after both long rides and rides with big efforts. I even use the gun on the no-ride days that fall between the riding days. I use it on my back and neck as well. It works well, and I am a proponent of the tech.

But, let’s talk a little bit about percussive therapy.

Some Thoughts from UCLA Health

According to UCLA Health, percussive therapy, which is also called percussive massage, uses “rapid and repetitive pressure combined with vibration therapy. The massage head moves quickly and forcefully, applying pressure directly to your soft tissue, while the vibrations engage the outer layer of skin”.

A good massage has been proven to help with stress reduction, easing pain, and improving circulation, says UCLA Health. But, not everyone can afford or has the time to partake in a professional-level massage. For this reason, a massage gun is a great “DIY” alternative. But before purchasing one, UCLA Health suggests the following features to consider:

 • Speeds: More options give the gun versatility.
 • Weight: Since you could be holding the gun for up to 10mins, they suggest a gun falls in the 2 to 4 lbs range.
 • Noise: This may affect where you use it and how “relaxing” the experience is.
 • Battery: How long the battery lasts between charges can affect whether it’s ready to use when you need it.

Benefits of Percussive Therapy

You don’t have to be an elite athlete to enjoy the benefits of percussive therapy. Some of the gains you achieve are just good for your overall health. Contrary to what you may think, I am not a medical professional, and I won’t be doing a super deep dive into the full medical benefits of percussive therapy, I will however list a few that UCLA Health mentions:

 • Improved mobility – Stiff necks, sore back or aching muscles may be due to fascia, layers of tissue and fluid that can surround and stabilize your bones, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels can lead to limited mobility. The repeated pressure at high speeds of percussive therapy thins and distributes the thickened fascia fluid helping your muscles move easier.
 • Reduced post-exercise soreness – Lacitic acid builds up in muscles after exercise which causes pain and soreness. A massage gun’s percussion forces the muscle fibers to release lactic acid reducing the soreness you’ll feel.
 • Decreased delayed onset muscle soreness – The pain and soreness that we feel 24 to 72 hours after doing a new exercise, or unfamiliar physical activity like moving or lifting something heavy is called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) resulting from tiny muscle fiber tears. Research has shown that vibration therapy increases skin temperature, blood flow, and hormonal response to reduce inflammation and pain associated with DOMS.

To summarize… it is safe to use a massage gun, before a workout, after a workout, or whenever you have muscle tension or stress. UCLA Health does say that if you are suffering from ongoing muscle soreness or stiffness, reach out to your primary care physician.

On with the Review Already

Being the lil’ bro to the B37, the Ekrin Bantam massage gun is the smallest, most compact massage gun that they offer, weighing in at a little under 500g (1.1lbs)… half the weight of the bigger B37.

Ekrin Athletics Bantam small but powerful
Pretty compact.

On top of being lightweight, it’s really compact and easy to use. The carrying case is small measuring 7.5″ x 7.5″. Being lightweight, the Bantam made for an ideal on-the-go massage companion… although I haven’t had a reason to use it like that very much. But the times that I did travel with it, it packed away nicely in my suitcase.

Ekrin Athletics Bantam on calling in sick magazine
Percussive therapy and a good read…

It’s even small enough to actually fit (without the case) in my wife’s purse with zero problems. It’s really small and light enough to take with you on a long bike tour or bikepacking adventure if that suits your needs. Backpacks and gym bags would also be a perfect match for the Bantam.

When it comes to dealing with my pre/post-ride muscle routines, I usually rely on stretching to relieve any muscle aches, but I’ve used the Bantam quite a bit in the last 8 months since receiving it, and that’s changed the game a little. And after actually reading about the benefits of percussive therapy, I’m going to be using the Bantam much more often and on a regular basis.

Ekrin Athletics Bantam next to my smart phone
The Bantam next to my Google Pixel 6 Plus for size comparison

Right away I noticed that despite its small stature, the Bantam packs way more “punch” than my Amazon special, which was almost twice the size. With its quiet motor, quality build, and rubberized grip area, the Bantam is easy and relaxing to use.

It came with four attachments:

 • Flat (silicone): For overall use
 • Bullet: Pinpoint usage for hands, feet, and knots
 • Round (silicone): Low impact for treating sensitive and sore areas
 • Fork: Designed to treat spine and neck

These attachments quickly and easily can be pulled from or snapped into the gun without the need for tools or any real effort. It also uses a USB Type-C charging cord making it easy to charge anywhere. Erkin says they use a premium lithium-ion battery and claims a 6-hour battery life.

Ekrin Athletics Bantam control panel

I can attest to the 6-hour battery life claim, as the battery in my Bantam lasts a very long time between charges. The power didn’t fade while I used it two or three times a week for weeks at a time without having to charge it. However, it does have a convenient indicator light on the bottom of the gun, that will let you know when it needs to be charged and when it’s done charging.

The Bantam uses a redesigned brushless motor that has three speeds, low (2000 rpm), medium (2600 rpm), and high (3200 rpm). I found all three speeds to be the perfect amount for me. All three of the speeds were useful, and I found it easy to find the right speed for the task at hand. In contrast, when compared to my Amazon special gun’s 5 speeds, where basically only two of its speeds were useful.

Ekrin Athletics Bantam Features and Retail

Retail: $150 (free shipping)

 • Compact Design
 • USB Charger
 • 4 Attachments
 • 6 Hour battery life
 • Slim, Easy-Grip handle
 • Three speeds (2000 to 3200 rpm)
 • Travel case included
 • Ultra Lightweight (1.1pounds)

Conclusion

I am a firm believer in the benefits of percussive therapy, I have been using and enjoying the results of massage guns for the better part of three years. The Erkin Bantam is the best one I’ve used. I love that it’s so small and can go anywhere I may need to bring it. Its power is unmatched when compared to the other massage guns I’ve used. It doesn’t bog down when applying a lot of pressure to trouble areas. It’s a great little massage gun that’s not terribly expensive and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone in the market. Its lightweight, and quality build will no doubt last a long time.

Check out Ekrin’s other massage gun options and accessories below.

We’ve all been there. You slip a pedal, or catch your leg with the pedal while walking your bike – leaving tell-tale bite marks on your shin. You could be more careful, or you could apparently just slap some closed-cell foam pedals on your ride.

Intrinsic foam pedal dimensions

Created by Intrinsic Cycles, the Bumper Pedal is exactly that. Starting with a traditional steel pedal axle with either 1/2″ or 9/16″ threading, the pedal bodies are then encased in closed-cell foam to make them soft to the touch. That is said to make them the “safest pedal in the world” that won’t damage your shins, doorways, car interiors, etc.

What about grip? The company claims that the pedals offer all the grip you need thanks to the Jessup brand grip tape applied to both sides of the pedals (sort of like these wooden pedals, but even more shin-friendly). Even with the grippiest grip tape in the world, these aren’t going to provide the same level of grip as a premium pair of flat pedals, but for many casual riders, it seems like it could be plenty.

Currently offered only through an IndieGogo campaign (that is already fully funded), pairs of Bumper Pedals start at $45 and are estimated to ship in July 2023.

Red Bull Racing may immediately bring F1 racing to mind, but Red Bull sponsors a number of different power sports – or in this case, wind sports. As the official ebike partner of the competitive sailing Alinghi Red Bull Racing Team, Stromer has released this limited edition ST7 ebike in the team’s colors. With only 350 of these bikes to be made, this is a pricey limited edition toy for those who can afford it; but for your money, you do get some of Stromer’s best technology.

The ST7 ARBR edition boasts Stromer’s most powerful motor and battery (offering a 110-mile maximum range), an electronically shifted Pinion 12-speed gearbox, a Gates carbon drive belt, and Blubrake’s ABS system on the front brake.

Stromer ST7 Alinghi Red Bull Racing:

The ST7 ARBR edition is built on Stromer’s aluminum Sports frame, which will be available in three sizes (M/L/XL) and is covered by a ten year warranty. The base version of the bike comes with a rigid aluminum fork.

For those who ride rougher surfaces, you have the option to add an inverted Wren suspension fork (which was developed specifically for Stromer) and/or a Kinekt suspension seatpost. There are more add-on accessories available, so check out all the options on Stromer’s website.

The ARBR edition comes in the team’s official Racing Blue color, and features a laser-engraved Alinghi Red Bull Racing logo on the top tube. As a bonus buyers also get a leather carrier bag that features the team logo.

This top-tier e-commuter is powered by Stromer’s strongest motor- a Syno II Sport rear hub motor, putting out 750w and 52Nm of torque. The motor provides assist up to 28mph (or 45km/h), and has a Sport mode for extra thrust. Providing power is Stromer’s most powerful BQ1440 48V, 1440Wh battery, which provides an impressive maximum range of 110 miles.

The ST7 ARBR edition offers 12 gears provided by an electronic Pinion C1.12 Smart. Shift drive unit with a low maintenance Gates carbon belt. This system’s push-button electronic shifting offers quick reliable shifts, plus it can shift gears under load and at a standstill. You can also select a starting gear, and the display unit shows what gear you’re riding in. Despite its fancy capabilities, Stromer says this system is virtually maintenance-free.

The ST7 ARBR rolls on Stromer’s 27.5” wheels (made by DT Swiss) with Pirelli Angel ST Sport tires. TRP provides 4-piston brakes with 203mm rotors front and rear and a Blubrake ABS system up front.

The bike comes with Supernova front and rear lights that offer daytime running light, high beam and brake light functions. The ST7’s on-board electronics also include a horn.

Photos c. Stromer

Finishing touches include a Brooks Cambium C17 saddle and Cambium ergonomic grips, front and rear fenders, a rear carrier rack, side mirrors, and a stem-mounted cell phone bracket.

Stromer’s OMNI app provides a host of features like automatic locking and unlocking via Bluetooth, over-the-air updates, a GPS bike locator, service reminders, crash alerts, motor setting customization, ride metrics, and more.

The ST7 Alinghi Red Bull Racing Edition will be available in June. MSRP for the base model is $13,999. See Stromer’s website to request a bike through your local dealer and for add-on accessory pricing.

Turner might not be turning out full suspension bikes in aluminum or carbon any longer, but that doesn’t mean Dave isn’t still designing bikes. In fact, Turner Bicycles seems to have hit its stride focusing on titanium bikes like the Nitrous and Cyclosis Ti. Now, Turner is adding another, more aggressive hardtail to the mix along with an interesting cruiser prototype.

Called the Scrub, this bike was a direct result of customers’ requests for a more capable Ti hardtail from Turner. Designed around a 160mm travel suspension fork and either 29 x 2.5″ or 27.5 x 2.8″ wheels and tires, the titanium frame features a low-slung top tube for increased standover height. There are also gussets on the seat tube/top tube and head tube/down tube since this bike is built to get rowdy.

Frame details include a 64.5º HTA and 435mm chainstays, an ISCG mount for the T47 bottom bracket shell, UDH, a 180mm post-mount rear standard, and no seat post bottle bosses – that keeps the seat tube completely open, so you can insert the longest dropper posts, or slam a long rigid post in the case you’re not running a dropper. That seat post insertion is 280mm on the Regular size, or 320mm on the Tall frame!

Pricing and availability are TBA.

DeWulf Prototype Cruiser

The DeWulf cruiser is a prototype titanium frame that has a bit of a poignant, yet inspiring back story. The bike gets its name from Dave’s longest employee Greg Wulff. Due to some health issues, Greg hasn’t been able to ride like he used to, so they put together this beautiful titanium cruiser frame that can be run geared or single speed.

The geometry is exactly the same as the Turner Nitrous Ti, and features a T47 bottom bracket, a 160mm rear brake mount that can fit up to 180mm rotors, and 27.5 x 2.8″ tires for stability. DT told us that they do have plans for production for the DeWulf cruiser, though the bike shown above is still a prototype.

Daysaver Incredible Multitool high and low torque

The concept of the Incredible Multitool is that it has the advantages of an Allen wrench, being able to reach all of the screws on your bike while offering two different levers to apply the right amount of torque.

Daysaver Incredible Multitool bit storage

At the same time, the spring-loaded and lockable levers are foldable making the tool easy to store in indiscreet, out-of-the-way areas on your bike. There’s also integrated bit storage, using a sliding, magnetic mechanism that opens and closes allowing for quick and easy access… with or without gloves.

Mix and Match bits for ultimate customization

The MixMatch bits, allow you to customize the bits that you take with you on your ride. Using a proprietary lock interface, the bits can be combined allowing you to bring only the tools you need without bringing the unnecessary. The stainless, hardened steel bits are also available for sale separately as well.

The Incredible Tubeless Tool/Chain Breaker

The Incredible Tubeless tool is another offering that is designed to provide a quick and convenient solution for tubeless tire repair. The tubeless tool is designed so that the plug is already equipped with the plugs while being stowed in the handlebar, making it immediately ready for use.

Daysaver Incredible Multitool chain breaker in use

It uses an aluminum design for durability even when being used with force, important to consider when fixing a broken chain using the tool’s patented chain guide.

Whether it’s their early pop tunes, mid-era rock classics, or psychedelic sounds, I challenge anyone to say they don’t like at least some of The Beatles’ music. State Bicycle Co. loves to pay homage to pop culture with limited edition bicycles and gear, and this time The Beatles get the nod with two special bikes and three jerseys. In State Bicycle Co.’s words – Here comes the fun!

State Bicycle Co. x The Beatles 4130 Abbey Road Bike: $649

The Abbey Road bike is State Bicycle Co.’s 4130 Road model, but with a unique Abbey Road inspired paint job. The sets of four stripes and the logo font are subtle but obvious references to the album cover, while the Abbey Road chain guard is a louder accent.

The 4130 Road’s chromoly frame features double butted tubing, and one retro component on this build is the set of down tube shifters that control an 8-speed drivetrain. The drivetrain also features a CNC machined crank with a 44t front ring and an 11-28t cassette.

The stock Lo-Pro rims come with 28c tires, but the bike can run up to 32mm widths. The wheels include sealed bearing hubs and quick-release axles. Front and rear caliper brakes handle stopping duties.

One key modern feature on this retro ride is a 1 1/8th threadless headset, and a timeless addition is the ever-popular Brooks B17 leather saddle. The 4130 Abbey Road bike is finished with a rear pannier rack and a set of Wellgo alloy pedals.

Available frame sizes are 49/52/55/59/62cm, covering riders from 5’1” to 6’6”. The complete bike (with a 55cm frame) weighs 22lbs 10oz. Through State Bicycle Co.’s website, customers can add optional accessories like locks, lights, bottle cages, tools and cargo bags at the time of purchase.

Yellow Submarine Klunker: $450

This limited edition of State Bicycle’s Klunker is adorned with a Yellow Submarine-themed paint job and graphics. Beatles fans will recognize the port-hole graphics on the top tube, the pointing hand and font on the State downtube logo, and the yellow submarine graphic on the bright red saddle.

The Klunker’s frame and fork are made from steel, and the one-size frame is suitable for riders from 5’5” to 6’3”. In the spirit of old-school simplicity, the Klunker runs a single-speed drivetrain with a coaster brake. The front chainring is a 42t, and the rear cog is 22t.

The Klunker rolls on durable 36 spoke 27.5” wheels with 2.4” CST Patrol MTB tires. A Leatherette comfort saddle provides a cushy perch, and the bike comes ready to ride with a set of flat pedals… and last but not least State Bicycle’s frame mounted bottle opener!

Optional accessories for the Yellow Submarine Klunker include lights, bike locks, bottle cages, foot straps, handlebar bags or a Klunker-specific frame bag.

Jerseys and Tech Tees:

The graphics on the Yellow Submarine jersey are simply awesome! Rainbows, polka dots, and bright colors surround The Beatles’ signature characters and phrases from their quintessential psychedelic rock album.

The Yellow Submarine jersey provides a slim Race Fit. It features three rear pockets, a premium full-length front zipper, and grippers on the sleeves. All of SBC’s The Beatles collaboration jerseys or tech tees are available in sizes S-3XL.

The graphics are the same on the Tech Tees and Jerseys, so here’s a close-up on the Tee.

If the jersey is too performance-oriented for you, there is also a Yellow Submarine Tech Tee available. These casual riding tops offer a t-shirt style fit, with ventilated side panels and a zippered rear pocket for comfort and convenience. The Tech Tee sells for $59.99.

The Beatles Retro Style Wool Jersey: $79.99

For cooler rides, State Bicycle Co. offers the retro-style wool jersey, featuring a simpler look with The Beatles’ logo up front and center. Other accents include the white collar and sleeve hems, a ‘Love Me Do’ heart on the sleeve, and SBC’s logos on the chest and back.

Made from a proprietary wool blend, this jersey features a quarter-length zipper, a gripper on the lower hem, and three pockets on the back.

Magical Mystery Tour Cycling jersey: $59.99

Take yourself on a pedal-powered magical mystery tour of your city, and show your love for The Beatles with this album-inspired jersey. From the front you can see the colorful collar and side panels, while the back shows off the whimsical Magical Mystery Tour graphic.

This jersey offers a full-length front zipper, a gripper at the lower hem, and wide hems on the sleeves. Three pockets on the back carry your ride essentials.

The Magical Mystery Tour graphics are also available on a tech tee. Construction details are identical to the Yellow Submarine version described above, and the price is the same at $59.99.

Frustrated by frame designs that don’t cater to female body types? Liv has updated its Flourish bike line to maximize comfort for women cyclists.

The Flourish line has been around since at least 2016, aimed at female cyclists looking for a comfortable commuter bike. For its latest models, Liv “meticulously custom-designed” each size of the line, using women’s “body dimension data and riding experiences to deliver an ideal geometry for most women,” the company said in a press release.

Each bike in the Flourish line even includes a hem weight for comfortable riding in a dress.

Cyclists can choose from the existing Flourish model, with rim brakes, or the new Flourish Disc, with disc brakes. Both come in a variety of colors, models and sizes, the company said, offering riders a bike it calls “chic and practical.”

“We created the Flourish for women seeking a bike that is not only enjoyable but also effortless to ride around town,” Meg Hung, road category manager for Liv, said in the press release. “Whether it’s commuting to work, meeting friends, or making a quick trip to the store, riders will find that the Flourish provides thoughtful functionality.”

Liv’s new Flourish, with the Pine color.

Liv Flourish: Details

The main update to the Flourish bikes is found in the frame redesign, which aims for a “modern” appearance, as well as a better fit. There’s also a size L frame now, which accommodates riders up to 182cm tall.

The only difference between the Flourish and the Flourish Disc is in the brakes. Otherwise, the line shares the same features. These include an ALUXX-grade step-through aluminum frame, and a Selle Royal Essenza+ saddle. There’s five entries under each nameplate, and the two single speed variants each get a Gates Carbon belt drive.

The Flourish comes with a Selle Royal Essenza+ saddle.

Accessories include the complete set of usual suspects, including fenders, kickstand, and a chain cover. Curatively, Liv includes a hem weight (for keeping that skirt arranged properly) that mounts to the frame.

Select models also feature other accessories like lights, a rack, and a basket. Find the full specs at Liv’s website.

Specialized’s latest aluminum Allez road bike continues to make us rethink how much performance you can get out of an affordable entry-level bike.

The high-performance metal Specialized Allez road bike first hit the tarmac nearly four decades ago, having first debuted in 1981 as the top-tier steel race bike from Specialized.

Specialized Allez steel frameset

And many years later, 42 to be exact, it’s still going strong – now as an entry-level alloy road bike.

The performance, however, is beyond entry-level.

Specialized Allez aluminum road bike redefines performance

Specialized Allez history

The Allez has been an affordable staple in the Specialized lineup for years and is a mainstay at dealers around the globe. It’s an excellent way for riders to experience the Specialized brand offerings without committing to S-Works level pricing.

In a world of ubiquitous carbon road bikes, the Allez has even carved a niche out for itself for roadies looking for high-end stiffness, handling & light weight from a metal bike.

Specialized Allez front

The ethos of the new Specialized Allez is ‘Confidence, Versatility, and Performance’. The Allez has since grown from a race-only ride to a do-it-all/gateway bike. A road bike that will help you decide your cycling future. The new Allez leans hard into its new identity, offering a premium alloy frame with new contemporary design features.

Plus, wider tire clearance, rack capabilities, and much more…

Specialized Allez Frame Tech Details

Specialized-Allez-E5-DoveGray-PR-Image-SeatStay

The new Allez frame begins with Specialized butted and double-butted E5 alloy aluminum tubing to create a respectable light frameset. Adding a full carbon fork reduces weight even more (no hidden alloy steerer tube), while helping smooth out your ride. The bare Allez frame tips the scales at just 1,375 grams, which is honestly just one water bottle heavier that their carbon road frames.

FEA (Finite Element Analysis)

Specialized Allez seatstays

Designed in computer simulations, Finite Element Analysis isn’t just for high-end carbon frames. This new Specialized Allez underwent extensive FEA to ensure it would provide a light and lively ride. The result is a highly stiff frame, and the best-performing alloy Allez to-date.

Roubaix-inspired Geometry

Specialized Allez headtube

Specialized borrowed from its legendary Roubaix bike’s endurance geometry for the new Allez. Why? The Roubaix geometry delivers unrivaled comfort for long miles and stable handling – yet it’s still race-ready. Perfect for the seasoned rider or the new roadie looking to finish their first century.

Specialized Allez Geo

That all-day endurance race geo starts with a taller head tube and a more relaxed head tube angle. The Roubaix-inspired geometry on the Allez takes the weight off the rider’s hands while supporting sit bones to give a balanced, stable ride.

The new Specialized Allez is available in seven sizes, from 44cm to 61cm. Whether you’re 4’8″ or 6’5″, chances are, there’s an Allez your size.

Two Stock Builds, But Infinitely Upgradable

Specialized-Allez-E5-DoveGray-PR-Image-Front

The new Allez is versatile; we’ve covered that. But how versatile?

The tire clearance is a beefy 35mm (32mm with Fenders). The spec for both models includes wide-range gearing more focused on the easier-side for steep hills and comfortable spinning. Plus — rack mount for those seeking extra commuter style with a road flare.

First Ride Impressions on the new Specialized Allez

Specialized Allez paint
The eye-catching paint job is a good start

It’s been a while since I’ve checked out a Specialized Allez myself. I know the bike well from working in bike shops, and I’ve always thought it was a great design. Now, this newest iteration is the most eye-catching and impressive (IMO).

Specialized Allez bridge

The aluminum frame really looks great (especially the seat stays), and could easily pass for a race bike with a different component build kit.

The stock build is entry-level, but still, the performance is solid and reliable. Eight-speed is enough to climb anything, as long as you have a suitable gearing spread, and the new Allez does. The designers & product managers thought out the spec well on the base model. They keep the price just above $1k but pack enough value for the long haul.

Specialized Allez rear derail

My time on the Allez has mainly been on short road rides and the rail to trail. The frame is responsive, and the ride quality is solid, not what I expected from something with an “entry-level” attached.

On the climbs, the wheels are the only thing that holds this Allez build back. They are pretty heavy, but I’m being very picky here since I ride a lot of nice light carbon wheels. The base build weighs in at a real 22.12lb (10.0kg) with Shimano 105 SPD-SL pedals (~265g)and two bottle cages. Not outrageously heavy, but more than I thought with the super light frameset.

I wanted to see how the bike would perform with a lighter set of wheels, so I opted for the Roval Alpinist SLX Disc launched earlier this year. Swapping in those Roval Alpinist SLX Discs and some lighter rotors that were already on the wheels, the Allez lost nearly 2 lbs (down to 21lb even).

Specialized Allez crankset

With lighter carbon wheels, climbing vastly improved – next-level get up and go for the bike.

We still have many miles to go on this updated Allez that just dropped into our test fleet recently.

Specialized Allez BB and clearance

But all signs point to this bike being an excellent option for anyone looking for a new road bike. The frame is versatile, and the 35mm tire clearance means it can double as your gravel bike.

Stay tuned for a long-term review down the road.

Hot on the heels of the limited Purple Reign single-speed we lusted over yesterday, State Bicycle Co. has more news of awesome upgrades to the 4130 Flat Bar All-Road. New colors and some pretty major mechanical upgrades are now available on this affordable and value-packed bicycle that State says is the perfect bike for gravel and/or touring.

It might even mean an all-new affordable State Bicycle Co. Gravel 1 Group-Set could be just around the corner!

The two new handsome colorways are Rust to Black fade, the name of this color (sounds kinda metal and reminds me of that Neil Young song).

State 4130 Flat Bar All-Road turquoise fat tire side shot
Turquoise to Black Fade

Any who, the other color is called Turquoise to Black fade, not as metal sounding, but still very handsome.

What’s new?

Some of the mechanical upgrades come in the form of new hydraulic brakes, and an all-new rear derailleur, pushing the 4130 All-Road’s bang-for-your-buck factor up a few notches.

Wait what?

Tech Details – Gravel Group-Set Tease!

State Bicycle Co 4130 Flat Bar All-Road bike, flat mount hydraulic disc brakes

Yes, State now has their own branded mineral oil hydraulic flat-mount disc brakes. For now they are only paired with those entry-level Shimano-esque flat bar mountain bike brake levers, but we can only imagine the State would want to offer a drop bar version of their new hydraulic disc brakes to lower costs compared to their more halo SRAM AXS gravel bike builds!

State Bicycle Co 4130 Flat Bar All-Road bike, adjustable clutch 1x11 gravel derailleur

And yes, they have an all-new second generation of their wide-range 11-speed mechanical rear derailleur. Unlike their original self-branded drivetrain a few years back, this new one has apparently been upgraded with an internally adjustable clutch so the rider can tune how much chain stabilization they actually need vs. the added drivetrain drag.

State already offered their mechanical All-Road 1 Groupset separately for just $350 – before it sold out. And this might hint at a similarly affordable Gravel version in the near future. Fingers crossed!

Teaming up again to drop some new outdoor gear, cycling’s Specialized and Swedish hiking experts, Fjällräven (pronounced (fyel-ray-vn) are at it again. This collab seems to target closer-to-home adventures.

Pieces in the collection are focusing on motion, hybrid functionality, and reliability. In hopes of optimizing both the riding and camping experience by being “comfortable and fun to use on all Spring and Summer bikepacking adventures”.

In the next 27 years or so, it’s said that two-thirds of the Earth’s population will be living in cities and towns. Lately, it seems that we’ve all been pushing to shift our priorities toward a better work/life balance. We are working to cultivate better physical and mental health as a whole, as well as working to improve the health of our planet. So it seems more important than ever to reconnect with nature.

Into the Great Nearby sends the message that adventure doesn’t have to be some elaborately planned event. Nature is everywhere. It could be at the end of a train ride, on the edge of town, around the corner, or right in your own backyard.

Ok, on to some highlights of the collection.

The Garmin Varia eRTL615 (e-bike Varia) is the first radar (that we know of) designed specifically for e-bike use. The design utilizes the e-bike’s power, creating a battery-free design for the radar and miles of safe travel for the user.

What is it — Garmin Varia eRTL615

For those unfamiliar — the Varia line from Garmin is a rear-mounted radar system that detects approaching traffic. When the unit detects approaching vehicles, it provides visual and audible alerts when paired with Garmin devices (Wahoo, Bryton, and others) or the Varia app on a compatible smartphone.

Garmin-Varia-eRTL615-rack-mounted and ready to commute

The units are becoming increasingly popular and offer security to ride in the form of a daytime running light and radar vehicle detection. The newest edition to the Varia radar line is the new eRTL615, e-bike specific unit. A few features make it different from the current offerings, the biggest being battery-free operation.

Now that’s not to say it’s solar or something like that; the unit operates off the e-bike as a host, granting longer than imaginable battery life.

The E-bike-specific Garmin Varia mounts either on a standard seatpost mount or directly to your rack/pannier mount for sturdy operation.

Livestock x Adidas Velosamba Gives Classic Cycling Shoe ‘Triple Rush’ Treatment https://bikerumor.com/livestock-x-adidas-velosamba/ https://bikerumor.com/livestock-x-adidas-velosamba/#comments Thu, 20 Apr 2023 10:00:00 +0000 https://bikerumor.com/?p=324301 Bike-courier-inspired details combine with the Velosamba's functional and understated construction for a slick urban shoe.

If you want it yesterday, you put the “Triple Rush” on it. That’s a term for high-priority packages coined by those heroes of urban cycling, New York City bike couriers.

Now, Livestock and Adidas splash phrases across the new Velosamba Triple Rush. The versatile, slickly-styled piece of footwear is designed to be equally comfortable for commuters and functional for couriers.

Two Triple Rushes hanging off a bike tube

The stock Velosamba has been around for a while, and the aim is a shoe that’s stiff enough for “efficient pedaling [but] still flexes for comfortable walking.” In service of that utility, the Velosamba gets a full-length reinforced midsole and two-bolt cleat compatibility.

The Livestock collab differs from the classic in materials and styling. The Livestock Velosamba Triple Rush comes with both suede and ballistic nylon. It’s an homage to the motley but durable getup that most couriers wear.

In the style department, I’d classify Livestock’s take as understated, rendered as it is in grey and black with the small, splashed yellow font. And of course, the ubiquitous Adidas “three-stripe” design makes its presence felt.

a tight view of the triple rush, with yellow font visible

There’s real steez in the insoles, which show off an illustration of a frantic bike courier busting ass to deliver his package safe and sound.

The Triple Rush weighs in 442g per shoe (claimed). It’s available now at deadstock.ca and Livestock locations across Canada for MSRP $170 CAD.

Get the hot sauce ready! Arizona’s own State Bicycle Co. is announcing a fun collaboration with the iconic Taco Bell to produce a limited edition State “DGAF” Klunker for you to drool over.

State Bicycle’s retro-inspired Klunker seems like a good platform for this type of delicious collaboration, as it seems to be the perfect kind of bike to ride to your local Taco Bell. This unique collaboration series includes a limited edition, on-the-bike handlebar, and frame bags, along with a full kit and t-shirt as well.

State’s Taco Bell Klunker Details

State’s Klunker is a homage to the glory days of the Repack and the birth of mountain biking. Not unlike the Klunkers that were raced down Mount Tam, the DGAF Klunker is all at once a beach cruiser, mountain bike, and BMX bike.

Equipped with a coaster brake rear hub, the Klunker eliminates all the pesky complications of modern bikes to focus on the simplicity and joy of riding your bike like a kid again.

State Bicycles x Taco Bell Klunker side view without frame bag

Taco Bell’s iconic logo and signature brand colors of purple, pink, and yellow are tastefully placed throughout the frame and accessories.

The lucky owner of this tasty steed will also receive a complimentary, custom-fit Taco Bell x State Bicycle Co. branded frame bag that has a retail value of $69.99 if bought separately.

Some more spicey details include a seat tube bottle opener, custom bike grips, and bar ends that are embossed with the Taco Bell logo. And a Brooks-type saddle with both State’s “SBC” branding and Taco Bell’s logo.

State Bicycles x Taco Bell Klunker handle bar bag

Plus, consumers can choose from a range of apparel, including a fully monogrammed kit (jersey and bib), t-shirt, and a limited-edition handlebar (dare I say) “burrito” bag.

Taco Bell’s history of collaborations, across many different industries, is pretty impressive. This collaboration with State Bicycles, however, is Taco Bell’s first between food and transportation giving people a new perspective on riding a bike while sharing their love of both brands.

State Bicycle x Taco Bell Klunker Retail

Retail: $420.69 (with frame bag)

From bikes to bags, hubs to brakes, and even a user-serviceable e-bike…

The post Taipei Show Design Winners: More Weird & Wonderful New Cycling Tech appeared first on Bikerumor.

]]>
Our final tech roundup from the 2023 Taipei Cycle Show focuses on the Design Award winners. This isn’t all of the winners, just the most interesting ones (with links at bottom to some of the others that we’ve covered individually). From bikes to hubs to kickstands and batteries, these are the ideas that could shape the products we’ll be riding in the future.

Trigon AR01 aero road bike with speed dimples

The Trigon AR01 looks like most other modern aero road bikes until you get up close. Small protuberances on the frame, located on the sides of the headtube, downtube, and seatstay-seat tube junction, keep air flowing more smoothly over the surface to reduce drag.

It’s called Vortex-Tubing Technology, and they say it cuts a cylinder’s drag in half, and the protrusions allow for thinner (lighter) wall thicknesses than dimples would, so it’s a win-win.

Trigon AR01 aero road bike with speed dimples

We’ve seen strips and grooves from Ridley before, and Zipp’s known for their dimples, but Trigon’s design has the bumps, um, bumping outward, and has them spread across more of the frame. And, apparently, the UCI is OK with this.

brake fairings on Trigon AR01 aero road bike with speed dimples

Small fairings over the disc brake calipers smooth air more, but still leave plenty of room for ventilation. While the AR01 name suggests “Aero”, it actually means “All-Rounder”, offering lightweight and stiffness in addition to aerodynamics.

And it fits 700×32 tires, so “All Road” isn’t out of the question. It’s available as a complete bike with BLKTEC cockpit, Dura-Ace Di2 and Fulcrum Racing wheels for $8,990.

route oh la la e-bike with dual batteries for long distance riding

The Zephyr Route Oh La La is an “electric rally” bike designed to go far. It has two PowerTube batteries for a total 1500W of power. Combined with front and rear racks and a compact build, it looks like a sweet way to get around town, or up the mountain for a picnic, or exploring a new city all day…which was the point of the design. It’s inspired by the Tour de France, and with a 200km+ range, you could take it up the mountain for a day, watch a stage, and then roll around town celebrating all evening.

KMC racing Duo chain and chainring for improved power transfer
KMC racing Duo chain and chainring for improved power transfer

The upcoming KMC Racing Duo is a chain plus chainring combo with teeth specifically shaped for the chain’s rollers. They match up perfectly, maximizing contact and power transfer for a claimed 5% improvement…for as long as you can hold 400 watts, that is.

weiting SFE hubs with floating pins instead of ratchet pawls
cutaway view of weiting SFE hubs with floating pins instead of ratchet pawls

This rear hub design from Wei-Ting uses a SFE (Separate Floating Engagement) design that puts a ratchet ring directly on the freehub body, all the way at the outer edge. It clicks across individual pins that line the entire perimeter, with stepped engagement to offer quick engagement since only every third pin is engaged at any time. The design’s main benefit is that it can use larger diameter bearings and place them further outboard, making for a stiffer hub.

AirShif automatically shifting rear derailleur
AirShif automatically shifting rear derailleur

The AirShif auto-shifting derailleur is interesting in that it takes a concept more typically used with internally geared hubs and applies it to an external derailleur. Using the app, you input your gear combos and set preferences for cadence, with the ability to have several modes. Pick the mode you want and the system will shift for you to maintain a desired pedaling cadence range. (click to enlarge any photo for more detail)

Yes, this is basically the same system we saw at the 2019 show, but for some reason it’s now won a Design Award.

gouach e-bike battery with user replaceable cells

The Gouach Repairable e-bike battery system is a great concept. They say that in many cases, when a multi-cell e-bike battery fails, it’s often just one or two cells inside that have gone bad. And pretty much every e-bike battery is a multi-cell design (listen to our interview with Bosch about e-bike battery safety to learn why), with 20+ individual cells in each battery pack.

gouach e-bike battery with user replaceable cells

So, if one cell goes bad and then you need to replace your entire battery pack, clearly there’s a lot of waste happening. Gouach solves for this by making e-mobility batteries with user-replaceable cells. Much like you’d replace a remote control battery, you simply pop in a new cell where needed, no soldering or electrical engineering expertise needed – the system tells you which cell needs to be replaced.

They’re offering ready-to-install battery packs as OEM options for bike brands, plus developer kits (shown here, coming soon) for those who want to design their own system. They’ll do custom battery designs for brands, too.

Random Gadgets & Accessories

CO2 chuck that lets you adjust air pressure being put into bicycle tire

This section is going to be rapid fire… here’s a CO2 chuck with a bezel that lets you adjust the air pressure limit for your tire. Just twist it to the setting you want and it’ll inflate to that PSI rating.

mini pump that inflates to 300psi

If you need more air than a CO2 can provide, this Co-Luck AIr Turbo HP/HV mini pump switches from High Volume to High Pressure and will “easily” inflate to 300psi.

tsai jung kickstand that mounts on a bicycle thru axle

CL-Massload makes all sorts of accessories, but this AxleMount kickstand for e-bikes is brilliant. If you have an e-bike, chances are high that the bolt-on kickstand comes loose or has sheared the bolts and broken off entirely. This has happened to me on multiple bikes because the extra weight is simply too much for them.

This system attaches the kickstand directly to the thru axle, using a specific interface on the dropout. So, no, you can’t add this to your existing bike, but here’s hoping bike brands adopt the interface (shown in detail on their website) and start using the already robust thru-axle as the attachment point.

magnetic bicycle pedals that hold the bike against metal racks and rails

The Digirit Pedal Park has a strong magnet in it so you can stick your bike to any metal rack, rail, pole, fence post, wall, sign, whatever.

wellgo quick release pedals for commuter and folding bikes

Wellgo is working on a Quick Release Device that lets you quickly take any pedal on or off the bike without tools. The pedal slots into the mount and, basically, uses the pressure of your weight on the pedal to keep it cantilevered in place, but with a sleeve that slides over the slot to physically capture it so it doesn’t just fall out at certain angles. Ideal for commuter and folding bikes where you may need to get your bike into tight spots, but not intended for performance bikes.

velo angel revo bike saddle with eco-friendly construction and materials

Velo’s Angel Revo saddle won an award for it’s eco-cred. From materials to construction processes, the nitrogen-infused foam and bio-plastic shell substantially reduce the emissions and energy when making it…and it’s also a very comfortable saddle, I’ve been riding one on my road bike since it launched.

tranzx dropper seatpost with adjustable travel

TransX showed an adjustable height dropper seatpost. Just pull the lever up and you can adjust it’s height by up to 30mm independently of its travel. Good for bikes with multiple riders of different heights, it makes adjustments quicker and easier.

Fulchee thru axles with adjustable length and locking end caps

Fulchee’s QUIK Thru Axle has two tricks up its sleeve. First, it has an adjustable length, helping it fit more bikes with fewer SKUs. On the other end is a twist-to-lock nut. Rather than thread the axle in like normal, you slide it in, then twist the nut on the opposite side to capture the axle. Then close the lever to pull it tight.

The design not only prevents the axle from coming out if the lever comes open, but since would-be thieves won’t know how it works, it provides some security for your wheels, too…but takes just seconds to open and remove if you know what you’re doing.

cable lock that hides inside a handlebar

This light-duty cable lock hides in your handlebar, just twist the lock out of the bar plug and pull it out. The cable end slides into the lock, working just like most of the cable locks integrated into hitch racks.

RideRever Arc hydraulic disc brake lever for smaller hands with short reach

RideRever Arc hydraulic brakes are made for those with smaller hands, using a lever that sits closer to the bar but with a leveraged actuation so it doesn’t just pull into the bar under hard braking. It uses a twin master cylinder design to deliver plenty of power from a very compact design. Bleed ports on top and bottom mean you can use them on either side for Moto/UK or US brake placement, no need to swap hoses between them.

disc brake pad and piston return tool with squeeze lever

This disc brake piston return tool uses a grip lever to expand the plates, which you put inside your brake caliper to force the pistons to retract should you accidentally over extend them by squeezing your brake lever when the wheel’s removed. Compared to other tools that use a twist-to-expand design, this makes the job much quicker and easier.

big nash oversize commuter bike bag for small folding bikes

Vincita’s Big Nash is an oversized rack bag meant to haul what you’d otherwise put into pannier bags, but designed for folding bikes or those with smaller wheels that sit too low to use traditional pannier bags. MSRP is $139, available in multiple colors.

There are a lot of race-focused helmets out there, but the helmets from Thousand take a much different approach. Designed to be stylish yet functional, the original Thousand Heritage helmet stood out from a sea of aggressively styled helmets.

Like any product though, improvements can be made. One of the biggest improvements that Thousand wanted to make to the helmet was making it fit more riders in an effort to be more inclusive to all. That meant introducing what they’re calling a “unique hybrid head form that is designed with both the Asian (round) and European (oval) head shapes.” Thousand points out that most helmet companies fit the latter headform, so the new Thousand headform should comfortably fit more riders globally.

In terms of sizing, the Heritage 2.0 is offered in three sizes, Small (54-57cm), Medium (57-59cm), and Large (59-62cm). The fit is certainly different from a lot of helmets that I’ve tried – at 56cm, I’m typically on the small side of a medium. The size guide for Thousand puts me in a small, which just fits but it’s a little tight at the temples. However, my wife whose head measures 55cm (and is more oval shaped) fits perfectly in the small.

I would say that the sizing is generally a bit bigger than other helmets out there, though I think I would still prefer the medium for my head. Adjustments are made with the dial fit system and internal cradle that offers three vertical positions. The vegan leather straps don’t have any ear cradle adjustment, but they’re well-positioned and fasten with a magnetic Fidlock buckle.

Improved Ventilation

Outside of the change in fit profile, the outer shell has been updated as well. Increased ventilation at the top of the helmet should make it a bit more comfortable in hot weather. While the front of the helmet lacks any visible venting, the inner brow of the helmet has internally molded channels that allow air to flow from the front of the helmet, and out the top and back. All together, Thousand claims this is responsible for a whopping 70% increase in ventilation from the original Heritgage helmet.

PopLock Still Popping

Unlike many of the helmets on the market, the Heritage 2.0 is not an in-molded design meaning there is a hard plastic outer shell with an inner EPS layer. That makes it more durable for daily use including locking it up to the bike – which is a perfect time to use their patented PopLock.

The magnetic PopLock cover is tethered to the helmet, so you can easily pop it out, thread your lock through it, and lock it to the bike.

Increased Visibility

The Heritage 2.0 gets another magnetic party trick as well with the addition of a new magnetic tail light. When available this summer, the light will be sold separately for $25 and will simply pop onto the back of the helmet. Then you can easily remove it when locking up the helmet or to recharge it.

Thousand Heritage 2.0 helmet actual weight

Thousand Heritage 2.0 Helmet Actual Weight

A non-in-molded helmet will typically be heavier, and that’s the case with the Heritage 2.0. At 455g, the helmet is on the heavier side, but it’s both CPSC certified for bikes and ASTM F1492-15 certified for skateboarding and roller skating.

Thousand Heritage 2.0 helmet bag

Pricing, Colors, & Availability

Offered in eight standard colors with additional seasonal colors coming soon, the Heritage 2.0 is available now for $99 with the option to add a monogram for $17-19. You also get their free accident replacement program where if you have an accident and your helmet is damaged, they’ll replace it for free. Also, each helmet ships in an environmentally friendly bamboo fiber bag, and Thousand has been a Climate Positive business since 2020 by offsetting 110% of their carbon emissions.

After looking at the bikes and frames, our attention turns to the cockpit and component array at the Taipei Cycle Show. Like the bikes, much of what’s here is to showcase a manufacturer’s capabilities. Some of it might get relabeled under a brand we know, some will be sold directly from the factory, and some is just showing off technical prowess or introducing a new design idea.

Windner Brachii carbon cranks

The Windner Brachii crankset uses opposed oblong carbon tubes to mimic your forearm bones, providing stiffness in all directions. They’re also wicked light at under 400 g for a set (excluding the spindle):

Windner Brachii carbon cranks actual weights

It’s a Red Dot design winner with a modular design that lets you use different spiders. That makes it compatible with analog and electric bicycles. It’s still undergoing certification, but considering SRAM’s new T-Type XO crankset has holes in it, it’s not such a wild idea.

Windner carbon saddles

Windner also makes full carbon saddles with little texture nubs under the clearcoat to keep you from sliding off. And carbon fiber shoe horns with gold leaf, of which I am now a proud owner.

VAZALAB seatpost with elastomer damper

VAZALAB’s B3F Formega seatpost uses an elastomer damper under the saddle clamp to provide three-axis motion (video here).

VAZALAB seatpost with elastomer damper

It absorbs shock and lets the saddle tilt and sway under you, but without bobbing in ways that could sap power from your pedal stroke. If you’ve ever ridden behind someone who seems to be sitting off-center (you know you have) or you feel like you’re always putting more pressure on one side than the other, maybe this solves that.

Deda Elementi ID Match bike fit system with Selle Italia saddles

Deda Elementi and Selle Italia have combined forces on their ID Match concept.

Deda Elementi ID Match bike fit system with Selle Italia saddles

Introduced with insoles, the ID Match lets bike fitters place different shapes and widths and stuff on a fit bike (or your bike in a fit) to ascertain the best parts for your anatomy and flexibility.

Deda Elementi Gera Curvy fork with mounts for bikepacking and adventure bicycle touring

Once your fit is dialed, the Deda Gera gravel lineup expands from the original cockpit parts to forks, offering two options for gravel, adventure, and bikepacking rigs.

The Gera Curvy DCR above is the more equipped option, with rack, fender, and accessory mounts, plus these sweet offsets that let you bring the gear forward (or backward?) to slim the profile, clear other accessories, or just accommodate different shape bags.

Deda Elementi Gera Curvy fork with mounts for bikepacking and adventure bicycle touring

The shapely legs clear a 29 x 2.2″ (700 x 57) or 27.5 x 2.6″ tire. Dynamo and brake hose routing are fully internal, part of their DCR design:

Deda Elementi internal routing cutaway for bicycle cockpits

Compatible cockpits, which it makes plenty of, can run hoses and cables and wires inside the handlebar and stem, through the headset, and then into the frame … or fork:

Deda Elementi Gera EDG DCR road bike fork with internal routing

A flattened front edge of the steerer tube makes room for control lines to sit in front of it, and ports just above the taper are where dynamo wires and brake hoses enter.

On the left is the Gera EDG DCR fork, the racier of the two options. It slims down tire clearance a bit to 700 x 45 or 27.5 x 2″, and loses the accessory mounts but keeps the internal dynamo and brake routing. Both forks are €625 each plus VAT. More details at DedaElementi.com.

Selle Italia Novus Boost EVO 3D-printed saddle

Sister brand Selle Italia’s new Novus Boost EVO 3D Kit Carbonia SuperFlow has a super long name and a new 3D-printed design on its cushioning. Compared to the SLR introduced at Eurobike 2022, this one uses varied density from front to rear to improve comfort for lighter riders.

Selle Italia Novus Boost EVO 3D-printed saddle

Denser latticing at the rear supports sit bones, but more space toward the front gets squishier under the soft tissue as you lean forward to climb or get into the drops. This will probably launch this summer. Its size is 145 x 248 mm, coming first in full carbon with 7 x 9 carbon rails.

Selle SMP gravel bike saddles

After launching “short” versions of its saddles last summer, Selle SMP follows up with a gravel lineup based on its VT20C, VT30C, and Well models. Other than the attractive gray clay color, I’m guessing the difference is padding material, but … well … I didn’t ask. The “C” refers to Compact, which is the shorter 255mm length, versus a very long 283 mm for its regular versions.

Lumis fenders with integrated lights

ReadyGO’s Lumis LF01 Glow Bike Fender won a design award from the show for integrating a light underneath that bounces the illumination off the bottom of the fender to give the rider a larger visual presence at night.

LightSkin handlebar with integrated headlight

LightSKIN has been making handlebars and seatposts with integrated lights for years, but now it’s making them brighter. As in, bright enough to see where you’re going, not just help drivers see you.

The update brings a new lens element, cleverly displayed here like a diamond ring, that has 40 distinct angles on its face to direct the light where it needs to go — on the ground, in front of the bike. That lets it comply with European, and German in particular, standards. Max output is 50 Lux of clear white light. Coming soon for regular and e-bikes, the former is getting a new dual-battery system for longer run times, and the latter is powered by the bike’s battery.

IB turn signal handlebar grips

IB Grips 1.0 version has integrated turn signals with stealth buttons on the inboard side that let you turn them on and off, and indicate your change of direction. The arrows face backward too, so drivers behind you can see what you’re planning to do.

IB turn signal handlebar grips

Running lights add a bit more visibility, and accelerometer-based brake lights provide more safety and communication to those around you. The 2.0 version is coming soon and will add sound to the turn signals, with an amber color for the signal arrow so it’s more discernable. It’ll also add the ability to be dynamo or e-bike powered.

Ebon handlebar tape

Ebon is a handlebar tape supplier (one of many) that had some cool designs. You’re unlikely to see them in shops under its brand name, but these show just a few of the prints it can do.

CICLOVATION handlebar tape in reflective colors

CICLOVATION, however, had a retail website for its very colorful, metallic, reflective, and shiny tape. There are tons of options; note the reflective ends on the top right.

Ridenow ultralight inner tubes for road bikes and gravel bikes

Ridenow makes some incredibly lightweight TPU tubes, with a lot of folks claiming they’re thinner and lighter than Tubolito. At just 24 g for a road bike tube (other versions are available, and with black valve stems on all of them, they might be worth a try … if you don’t mind ordering from abroad. And they’re cheap, as low as $5 each if you search around.

rock bros top tube bag with ratchet dial attachment

In the U.S., RockBros is basically an Amazon brand, however, it seems to get good marks. Its display collection of frame and saddlebags use Fitgo dials (like BOA, but not) to tighten the straps around the frame, saddle rails, etc., to attach them to the bike. These aren’t on its website yet, but they definitely look like a step up from current offerings.

The white looks good too (until it doesn’t), and bungee straps along the outside let you shove small, soft things in there without having to stop. It might be an affordable way to dabble in bikepacking once these launch.

Stay tuned for more roundups and tech from the 2023 Taipei Cycle Show!

There’s no shortage of weird at the Taipei Cycle Show, but when it comes to bikes, it’s a mix of pure concept to show what a frame manufacturer can do and some “normal” bikes to court distributors. Sometimes, it means going to extremes, like with a 540g full carbon road bike frame. And in the case of this gorgeous blue Ioklin Frameworks Columbus steel gravel bike, some are custom builds to showcase a supplier’s parts.

Ioklin Frameworks steel gravel bike with BLKTEC internal routing cockpit

Built to show off BLKTEC’s integrated handlebar and stem, the bike’s paint scheme appears rough and rusted in spots, but it’s all paint, and it looked fantastic. If I could’ve taken one bike home with me, this was probably it. Word is, Ioklin will be exhibiting at the MADE Bike Show this fall in Portland.

Ora Engineering is a Taiwanese titanium bicycle manufacturer, offering shaped tubes …

… and maybe even custom racks! Noticed a trend yet? Full internal routing and cockpit cables are a thing now — and won’t be going away anytime soon.

Speedvagen Wavy Road all-road bike

While we’re on metal, Speedvagen’s reps were showing off a few of the latest. The Wavy Road is an all-road bike with a groovy paint scheme.

Speedvagen Rugged-er Road gravel bike with RS Rudy fork

The Rugged’er Road fits big tires and adds a suspension fork … I’m not sure if they painted the bike to match the fork or vice versa, but it looks good.

Speedvagen Urban Racer

The Urban Racer probably has Ron swooning right now. It looks retro, but the details from its road bike (swoopy seatstays, integrated seatmast, paint-matched frame pump) would make this just as much at home with some fat slicks as these full knob mountain bike tires.

Speedvagen Urban Racer
Speedvagen Urban Racer

Rear coaster brake yields to a front disc brake in emergencies, and an integrated chainguard levels the whole thing up to Show Bike status. This model’s not listed on the Speedvagen website, though.

Tommasini Mini T compact road bike

The Tommasini Mini T is, well, a road bike with tiny wheels. Go figure.

Trigon ARO1 aero road bike

The Trigon ARO1 won a show design award (we’ll have details on it in a roundup post for all award winners) thanks to cleanly integrated and novel aero features like dimpled surface textures across much of the frame, brake rotor fairings, and more.

2023 Argon 18 Dark Matter gravel bike

The 2023 Argon 18 Dark Matter gravel bike is out now and has more mounts than almost any other non-bikepacking specific frame I’ve seen.

2023 Argon 18 Dark Matter gravel bike

Three mounting points on the fork legs, two on top, four on the seat tube, two on each seatstay, and six on the downtube. Some are pretty close together, making them better for small accessories or just fine-tuning your bottle cage’s position, but still …

new Argon 18 all-road bike with internal storage

Sitting next to it is this mystery bike. It’s not online yet, but it looks like an all-road bike borrowing features from the brand’s performance and endurance road frames and the Dark Matter gravel bike, then adding an internal storage compartment opened with a low-profile lever that would sit flush against a bottle cage. I’ve reached out for more info, and will update as they arrive.

Giant Revolt X gravel bike with suspension fork

The Giant Revolt X Pro gravel bike adds a suspension fork to its top carbon frames, plus a dropper seatpost.

Voltraware wireless charging e-bike platform with cargo trike

This cargo e-bike caught my eye for the design, and then I saw the wireless charging spot it’s parked on. From Voltraware, it can deliver up to 150 W of juice from 15 cm away. As the sign says, don’t put your cell phone anywhere near it.

Polini e-bike motor on Santillo road bike

This Santillo e-road bike has a very distinct look, and it’s also available in human-powered versions. It has a Polini drive system …

Polini e-bike motor on Santillo road bike

… which is named E-P3 — branding that’s suspiciously similar to Shimano’s EP8 at a glance.

Travix folding full suspension e-bike with fat tires

I couldn’t find a website for Travix, but its HAMR folding fat-tired e-bike looked rad. Full suspension, fenders, front basket, and cleanly integrated battery in the seatpost powering a hub motor — very nice.

Travix Powerkat fat tire mini e-bike

Travix’s mid-drive Powerkat e-bike with moto-style fork and handlebar looks like fun too.

Fronbital prototype suspension gravel bike frame

Second to last is this full suspension prototype from Aryen Motor & Aeronautics Co, Ltd., which has a Taiwanese address on its card but Google says is an Indian company making motors and pumps. Such is the mystery of trying to find some of these things after the show.

Fronbital prototype suspension gravel bike frame

The model is, I think, called the Fronbital. This one’s a proper test mule it used to figure out geometry and suspension kinematics. Note the different mounting points for the linkage (and the comically short rear shock), but my favorite part is the wooden rockers:

Fronbital prototype suspension gravel bike frame

They told me it allowed them to more quickly test different pivot positions than machining a part from metal, and it worked just fine for kinematics work in the lab. No explanation for the downtube friction shifter, but it looked cool and could be a fun way to provide a rear shock remote lockout without adding an MTB lever to a drop bar layout.

Grat 540g carbon frame from Taipei Show 2023

Finishing off this roundup is a frame (technically #18, consider it a bonus) from Grat Co. Ltd. With a claimed weight of just 540 g for the standard version, and 614 g for the one with a seatmast, it’s rated for a rider weight up to 220 pounds (100 kg).

Grat 540g carbon frame from Taipei Show 2023

The front triangle uses a low headtube with space for an inset top tube cover to keep it clean. Both the top and down tubes have shaping to add torsional rigidity, and the round BB tube can be 68 mm or 86 mm wide depending on the customer’s spec. As shown, it’s 100% carbon with no metal inserts. The rear dropouts are hollow carbon fiber.

Last month, we covered a Specialized Patent titled “Bicycle Frame with Angled Strut”. Today’s announcement of the 2023 Specialized Sirrus Carbon proves we were very much mistaken in thinking it could materialize as their next-gen spring classics road racing bike. Indeed, the angled strut frame finds its home on a model historically pitted as a comfort commuter, though with clearance for 700c x 42mm tires, the new Sirrus makes a compelling argument for its re-appropriation as a flat-bar gravel bike.

With the 2023 Sirrus Carbon, Specialized has looked to combine performance and comfort into a lightweight, versatile package. They even made it look rad, too. Pricing starts at $2,250 USD.

The 2023 Specialized Sirrus X 5.0 Carbon retails at $2,250 USD

2023 Specialized Sirrus 6.0 Carbon and Sirrus X 5.0 Carbon

The 2023 Specialized Sirrus Carbon is a road- and gravel-worthy bicycle with a striking aesthetic thanks to what Specialized are referring to as the Compliance Junction. As the name suggests, it isn’t there to simply look cool; indeed, it is there to provide a little flex to the rear-end for improved forgiveness and comfort. We are told it does this without sacrificing performance and efficiency.

2023 specialized sirrus carbon x flex strut compliance junction

So, how much does it actually flex?

Well, an exact number of millimeters isn’t specified. However, if we look to the patent loosely pertaining to this frame design, we see that they tested the “Bicycle Frame with Angled Strut” to a vertical deflection of 7.9mm; that compares to the 2.9mm of vertical deflection they saw with the “conventional frame” that was tested alongside it. To learn more about the stiffness properties of the frame design in question, check out our coverage of the patent here.

2023 specialized sirrus carbon x compliant frame strut

There’s no getting around it; the 2023 Specialized Sirrus Carbon does look remarkably familiar. We simply can’t ignore the fact that a very similar frame design was very recently shown in the form of the Rondo Ruut V2 Carbon Gravel Bike. It too gets the “broken seat tube”, replaced by an angled strut that extends forward to meet the downtube, rather than the BB cluster. Specialized has pipped Rondo to the post, however, as the Ruut V2 won’t be available until later this year.

2023 specialized sirrus carbon 6

Where the Ruut V2 is a dedicated Gravel Bike with a drop-bar and (probably) clearance for higher volume tires, the Specialized Sirrus is more of an all-rounder, aimed at urban dwellers who want a bike that’s efficient enough for the daily commute, but not afraid to venture onto the gravel paths of the surrounding countryside.

2023 SPECIALIZED SIRRUS FUTURESHOCK HEADTUBE STEERER VIBRATION DAMPING

The Compliance Junction isn’t the only source of vibration damping on this frame. Just like their dedicated Gravel Frame, the Diverge, the 2023 Sirrus Carbon also boasts the Future Shock, a unique suspension design housed underneath the stem that works to prevent the harsh frequencies caused by bumps in the road from reaching the rider’s hands. Positioned above the head tube is a concealed spring that moves in a vertical path. Unlike regular front suspension, the Future Shock does not cause any changes in frame geometry or wheelbase.

The 2023 Sirrus Carbon is well-equipped for longer rides with opportunity to mount three water bottles to the front triangle polygon; one of the partial seat tube, a second on the downtube, and a third on the top-side of the top tube. The Sirrus is MIK compatible with mounting points for racks and fenders – in particular Specialized’s DRYTECH 42c fenders.

The Sirrus is available at two price points: $3,000 USD for the Sirrus 6.0, and $2,250 for the Sirrus X 5.0. They share the same carbon frame and fork, but differ on important spec like drivetrain, brakes and tires (specs below). Both are available in sizes XS-XXL, with the carbon layup of each frame tuned specifically such that the ride quality remains consistent no matter the size.

Reach stretches across a 350mm to 425mm range, with a consistent 440mm chainstay length on all frames. For a size guide on the Sirrus Carbon, head to the Specialized website.

The new SKS Infinity Universal rear bike rack will fit almost any bike with a sturdy, strap-on mount that attaches to the seatstays. Once on the bike, there’s a wide variety of proprietary and MIK-compatible accessories to outfit it however you like, from commuter transport to all-terrain pack-outs on bikes with up to 2.8-inch tires.

SKS infinity universal rear rack with MIK-compatible mounts

The rack is just 975 g, and with pivots at the mounting points and stabilizer bars, it can be configured to lay flat on most normal bikes. The top platform accepts any MIK-compatible accessory, from baskets to bags, rated for loads up to 16 kg (so, probably no kid’s seats). Or click or strap pannier bags to the sides, or mount all those things for bigger trips.

SKS infinity universal rear rack with MIK-compatible accessories shown on display

SKS will offer its own accessories to outfit it too, including fender sets for both gravel- and MTB-size tires and frames, a tail light that straps into the rear but includes an adapter to strap around your seatpost when the rack’s not in use, and a water-resistant bag.

The Infinity Universal rack runs €110 and is available now.

new SKS Rennkompressor NXT floor pump with folding legs and digital gauge

The SKS Rennkompressor claims to be the world’s first floor pump, saving cyclists from having to use a hand pump every time they inflate their tires. It’s remained largely unchanged save for updated materials over its decades in existence, but now it gets a digital counterpart.

New SKS Rennkompressor NXT floor pump with folding legs and digital gauge

The SKS Rennkompressor NXT gets a large digital gauge that switches between psi and bar. A tall shaft and long hose with separate Presta and Schrader ports and a big lock lever make it easy to pump tires with a bike in the workstand or on a car rack.

It also gets two feet with rubberized pads, which fold up against the pump. The beechwood handle can be quickly threaded off too, making it more travel friendly. A non-digital version with a standard analog gauge is also available, and both pump up to 230 psi (16 bar). MSRP from €100-110, available in Q2 2023.

SKS AirSpy wireless digital tire pressure monitor for tubeless bicycle tires

The new SKS AirSpy TL (on right) is a new tubeless compatible version of its wireless tire pressure monitor and has a wide range of valve stem heights to fit more of the high-performance wheelsets for road, gravel, MTB, etc.

It pairs via Bluetooth with its app to show you real-time tire pressure on either its app or Garmin cycling computers, so you can monitor as you ride (possibly confirming that nagging feeling that you’re slowly losing air). It can measure up to 120 psi (8.3 bar)

Sold as a set for under $100, valve lengths are 60/67/74/81 mm, and they’re as light as 17 g. Available Q2 2023.

Check these and a few more new little goodies on the SKS website.

Urban riding is hard on bikes, and urban bikes are hard on booties. Enter Mondraker’s CHASER X range: two eMTBs attempting to bring off-road heritage to the often surprisingly bumpy world of daily urban commuting.

“The new CHASER X range is versatility taken to the max,” according to a Mondraker press release. “Able to get around on any surface or in any environment, [the CHASER X range] offers the responsiveness, speed, and safety of a mountain bike but refocused on an urban setting.”

a close-up of the CHASER RX showcasing it's mountain bike suspension, lights, and rear rack.
The mountain bike DNA is quite apparent in the CHASER RX, particularly its suspension an geometry.

Mondraker built the CHASER X and CHASER RX with 150mm of travel up front and 140mm in the rear. Adding to that cushion are 2.6-inch 29er Maxxis Ikon tires.

Both versions come standard with a rear rack rated for 55 pounds, plus mudguards, front and rear lights, DB8 brakes, and a direct-mount kickstand. Mondraker says its aluminum frames are designed with “forward geometry” in mind, giving the Chaser X range “more comfort and safety than a conventional urban…bike ever could.” You can make that determination for yourself with this geometry chart.

CHASER X and CHASER RX

The CHASER X is the entry-level model and gets a RockShox Recon Silver RL 29 fork and a SRAM SX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain. On the electric side, the CHASER X boasts a fourth-generation Bosch CX motor and a 625Wh Powertube battery.

Upping the ante a little, the CHASER RX brings a 750Wh battery to the table. An ONOFF Pija dropper seat post (170mm travel), a drivetrain with SRAM SX and GX Eagle components, and a RockShox 35 Silver TK29 suspension fork round out the build.

The CHASER X sports an MSRP of $6,899 and comes in slate or cream, while the forest-green CHASER RX sits at an MSRP of $7,599.

There is definitely no such thing as being too visible, right? That point is being made by RedShift Sports with their new Arclight Pro Smart LED pedals. After RedShift asked if I wanted to check them out in person, I was on board. About this same time last year, I wrote a review on their Original Arclight City Pedals and found them very useful.

The unique thing about their lighted pedals is that they offer 360 degrees of visibility compared to a standard bike light that just provides front and/or rear visibility. It’s said that lights moving in a circular motion are said to make a cyclist 57% more likely to be seen by a motorist, more so than a standard bike light.

During the review period of the Original Smart Pedals, I did find that I felt safer on the road amongst traffic while using the pedals, I definitely felt more “seen”.

Overall, it was a positive review, and I still use those pedals. But, I did conclude that although the pedals worked well at holding soft-soled shoes to the pedal, I thought they would benefit from the addition of traction pins for future iterations of the pedals.

According to the press release for the Arclight PRO Pedals, I wasn’t the only one that felt that way. Now, the PRO version of the pedals is packed with cool features and versatility including the option to add traction pins if you’d like.

A big shout out to RedShift Sports for listening to their end users!

New Pedals, Same Smart Features

The SmartSet Technology that was built into the Original Arclight City pedals was unique and really put the OGs in a class of their own. The good news is, the PRO version comes with the same SmartSet Technology. The PROs use the included 4 USB rechargeable light modules and an included recharge hub. The 3 beam pattern options (steady, flash, and eco) last up to 36 hours.

The new Arclight PROs SmartSet technology is the brain of the pedal. This tech instantly knows the orientation of the pedal and can switch the light that’s front-facing to white and turns the light that’s rear-facing to red. The auto on/off is controlled by the same technology.

Co-Founder Erik de Brun says, “Customers are constantly telling us that cars are finally giving us a wide berth and slowing down while passing, and the motion of the lights grabs attention, even during the daytime.

The new pedals look pretty nice. And although their profile is a bit clunky looking, they do look rugged and utilitarian in the fit and finish. They spin great with the use of three internal sealed bearings, and they are fully serviceable and rebuildable. They are a bit hefty, to be expected, and weigh in at 367g.

First Look: What’s in the Box

In the box: Arclight PRO pedals, rechargeable lights, charging hub, traction pins, and tool.

The Arclight PRO Pedals are fully modular making them super versatile and rebuildable. The pedals come with everything you need to do all of the available customizations that are available.

The PROs are so versatile, you can pick and choose what kind of pedal configuration you want – flat or clipless. Even clipless on just one side! You can run these pedals as they come out of the box, clipless with a platform. Or, you can run them fully flat with the included traction pins, or remove the light wings and run them fully clipless, or flat on one side, and clipless on the other.

Arclight PRO Smart Clipless Pedals

Using a T25 bit, you can loosen and remove the four screws to dismantle and remove the outer wings, leaving the SPD-compatible “clip”. Doing so, you lose the ability to use the light pods. These wings will now be available in black (shown) or silver.

Archlight PRO Smart Flat Pedal

Using a T10 bit to remove the SPD-compatible clip and adding the traction pins with the included tool, you can transform the Arclight Pro into a flat pedal. The pedals come with a bag of traction pins and a little tool to install and remove them. The pedals hold 12 pins per side, making it a pretty aggressive flat pedal.

Arclight PRO Smart Touring/Commuting Pedal

After taking off one side of the SPD-compatible clip and adding the traction pins and leaving the other clip assembled, you now have, what I would call a touring pedal. One of my favorite types of pedals. A pedal you can flip over and ride with regular shoes or sandals, or flip it over and clip in for a serious commute with cycling shoes… your call.

Arclight Pro Features

 • Fully CNC machined aluminum
 • 3 high precision, low friction sealed bearings
 • Clipless (dual-sided clipless with removable wings)
 • Flat – includes 12 traction pins/side and removable wings
 • Silver or Black replaceable wings
 • Fully rebuildable
 • SmartSet Technology – Pedals sense when you are riding, stopped or parked and auto-select white/red color
 • USB rechargeable – use any USB charger (hub for 4 lights included)
 • Long battery life – up to 36 hours of run time
 • 3 light modes – flash, eco-mode, solid
 • Weatherproof – IPX 64
 • 1 year warranty

Arclight PRO Retail

Retail:

 • PRO Clipless: $175
 • PRO Flat: $160

Arclight PRO pedals ship with pedals, rechargeable lights, and a charging hub. Arclights work on all types of bicycles; road, MTB, gravel, urban, and e-bikes.

Keep an eye out here for my full review of these new Arclight PRO Clipless Pedals.

News from the Northstar State, Minnesota, Wilde Bikes announces their new bikepacking frameset, the Supertramp. I know what you are thinking, but no, it has nothing to do with these guys. Ok, that was low-hanging fruit perhaps.

The Supertramp is a bikepacking-specific frameset that Wilde thinks will urge you to wander… you know, like a Supertramp.

Update: Get ready to wander and snap up on of the limited edition bikes now. Scroll for details…

Jeff Frane, the bike designer at Wilde Bikes, says that he is “super into the current ATB trend, as they’re just good bikes. You can literally do anything with them. They can be built up in infinite ways, and are virtually future proof. When a bike leads with capability, it’ll always be useful and relevant.” I couldn’t agree more.

That being said the Supertramp is Wilde’s all-terrain bike that is ready to bikepack, trek, or be taken on any adventure you care to partake in. Wilde says it’s built for both comfort and style for either a month-long bikepacking trip to trips to the corner store.

The frameset looks pretty versatile with all of the rack accessories, and bag mounts for many different build configurations. The Supertramp comes in four sizes and is paired with Wildes “signature steel, segmented fork.”

Some of the features you’ll find on the Supertramp are:

Frame

 • Three pack mounts on top and bottom of the down tube, and bottle bosses on the seat tube.
 • Top tube feeding bag mounts
 • Fender mounts
 • Stealthy dropper post routing
 • Front triangle optimized for a large frame bag
 • For cable management, Wilde has chosen to use a modular system which allows for a clean appearance and can be customized for AXS, 1X, or dropper post routing. Cambatable with Paragon Machine Works guides.
 • Full loop cable guides on stays. Wilde says the use of zip ties on a high end bike is inelegant.
 • Clearance for 29×2.6″ tires but optimized for 29×2.25″ tiires.

Fork

 • Fender mounts
 • Double dropout eyelet
 • Three pack munts
 • Mid-blade mount
 • Internal dynamo routing
 • Mounts for Surly 8 and 24 Pack Racks.

Geometry

Wilde Bikes Supertramp geo chart

The Supertramp looks like it’s rolling with some comfy off-road touring geo. This is a geo that works well as an “all-rounder” or ATB bike. It’s got a tall stack height, and a long reach that maximizes front triangle space for a large frame bag. The long-ish reach will allow the use of a modern short stem.

The bike has a trail of 84 which is mid-high, but Wilde says that this trail number strikes a balance of off-road handling characteristics and the ability to carry a front load.

Frame Tubing

Wilde Bikes Supertramp cro-mo badging

The tubing is Wilde’s own proprietary double butted chromoly, called Wilde TLC (tough, light, compliant). They say they build each model and size of their bikes with an optimum blend of tubing diameters, wall thicknesses, and butting profiles. The result is a goal to build a frame that is built to last, as light as practical, and comfortable for the rider.

Frame Specs:

 • Clearance for 29×2.6″ tires
 • 44mm headtube
 • 73mm bottom bracket shell
 • ISO disc mounts
 • Boost spacing
 • Seatpost: 31.6
 • Seat Collar: 35.0
 • Cable Guides: Modular guides under the downtube, and full loop braze-ons on the stays (no zip ties)

Fork Spec:

 • Clearance for 29×2.8″ tires
 • ISO disc mounts
 • 110mm Boost Spacing
