EcoFlow recently unveiled two new products that can bring more chill to your summer. The brand now offers portable electric coolers and air conditioners for use at campsites, job sites, or home.

The GLACIER 3-in-1 electric cooler can simultaneously act as a refrigerator, freezer, and icemaker. To achieve this, it has three dedicated, separate compartments.

The WAVE 2 is a wireless, portable air conditioner and heater in a small package. The brand claims it’s powerful enough to quickly raise or lower the temperature inside vans, boats, cabins, and tents. This dual-function unit has an 8-hour runtime potential.

Read on for more details on the GLACIER and WAVE 2 — and how to get a deal on the portable AC.

GLACIER 3-in-1 Electric Cooler

‘Impressively Quick’ Icemaking

The EcoFlow GLACIER’s icemaking speed sets it apart from its competition. Equipped with a 120W compressor, the GLACIER’s icemaker produces 18 solid ice cubes in 12 minutes. We found this to be much faster — “impressively” so — than other electric coolers with icemaking capabilities.

The icemaker is separate from the fridge/freezer space, so you can enjoy fresh ice cubes while your food and beverages remain chilled or frozen. Additionally, the compressor allows for cooling the interior storage space from 86 to 32 degrees Fahrenheit in roughly 15 minutes.

At outdoor temps of 77 degrees F, the GLACIER’s plug-in battery can run up to 40 hours of refrigeration or 19 hours of freezing, according to the brand.

Dual-Zone Cold Storage

Inside, the two storage compartments can hold different temperatures independent of one another. One side can cool while the other freezes, so you can keep meats or instant meals frozen while fresh fruit and veggies refrigerate in the same unit.

The GLACIER’s design uses a divider to create two compartments of different sizes that work independently from one another. If you need more freezer space than fridge space, or vice versa, you can set the temperatures separately so each can refrigerate or freeze from 50 to -13 degrees F.

If you want to use the storage space solely as a refrigerator or as a freezer, remove the internal divider (which doubles as a cutting board) and store it inside the lid. For reference, it holds 60 cans inside.

(Photo/EcoFlow)

The GLACIER comes with two handles for moving it around. And you can buy add-on add wheels and a telescoping handle for pulling it like luggage, as shown above.

A digital display shows your temperature settings and the battery life. Similarly, the EcoFlow app lets you see and adjust those settings remotely. According to the brand, you could even tell it to make ice as you’re leaving the trailhead, and it will be waiting for you after a long day in the heat.

It takes a little over 2 hours to charge the GLACIER via solar (up to 240 W), AC, and DC. A car charger is another option.

WAVE 2 Portable Air Conditioner: The Sequel

(Photo/EcoFlow)

EcoFlow says the WAVE 2 is 20% smaller than its predecessor and has 27% more power. It measures 21.3 x 11.9 x 16.4 inches with an add-on battery attached.

A 1,159Wh add-on battery should enable the WAVE 2 to cool for up to 8 hours. It can also be powered by EcoFlow’s portable power stations for a claimed maximum runtime of 18 hours.

The unit pushes 5,100 BTUs for fast cooling. The brand says within 5 minutes the AC can drop the temperature by 18 degrees F inside a 50-square–foot room. Conversely, the unit can heat the same space just as quickly, raising the temperature by 18 degrees F with 6,1000-BTU heating.

The EcoFlow app lets you monitor and control the portable AC unit. That means you can start cooling down an RV, truck camper, or tent as you’re wrapping up your afternoon fun. It requires no drainage.

The WAVE 2 runs in fast mode, eco mode, or sleeping mode. In sleeping mode, the unit’s noise is 44 dB. That’s roughly the same ambient level of a library or chirping birds.

Lastly, a spare battery lets you continue to power the unit while the other battery charges via AC, solar, a car, or power stations.

Located in Portland, Maine, outdoor apparel company Pinebury says its mission is to make the “finest merino wool active-wear in the world”. This mission is driven by a passion for the activities that come naturally to their Maine landscape.

Rooted in cycling, but dedicated to outdoor pursuits that motivate athletes year-round, Pinebury apparel is made in the USA, helping to ensure that the products meet environmental standards, fair labor practices, and safe working conditions while preserving traditions and manufacturing capabilities.

Staying sharply focused on craftsmanship through American manufacturing minimizes environmental impact, reduces waste, and strengthens their community.

The launch of Pinebury’s Spring/Summer Collection is manufactured with the innovative Nuyarn Merino, a bike industry first for cycling jerseys and apparel. Nuyarn is a spinning technology that “releases the natural performance characteristics of wool fiber twisted out by traditional spinning methods”. The result, Nuyarn says, is “wool products made from natural fibers that outperform synthetics”.

Making gear that is inspired by a love of four-season adventures, Pinebury’s use of natural fibers fits perfectly with the activities natural to the coastlines, mountains, and trails of Maine

The Spring/Summer Collection offers a range of cycling and multi-sport apparel that harnesses the cutting-edge technology of the Nuyarn Merino. Because Nuyarn is drafted not “twisted”, it “absorbs better in the vapor state, managing moisture more, as it does in its loftier fiber state (or on the sheep’s back)”.

Nuyarn Merino is 5x faster to dry, 8.8x more durable and has 85% more elasticity/stretch than conventional ring or core-spun Merino (the industry standard).

The Pinebury Collection

Including jerseys for either road or gravel and high-performance multi-sport tops in either long or short sleeves, the collection is tailored for optimal fit, breathability, and freedom of movement. The Pinebury collection is also non-gendered, allowing the end user to choose a product that is based on their measurements to get the best fit.

Kyle Rancourt, Founder and President of Pinebury had this to say:

For our initial launch collection, Nuyarn emerged as the ideal natural materials partner, they are surpassing all other merino and natural fiber technologies in terms of performance and longevity. The potential of this technology is boundless and we are merely scratching the surface of what it can achieve. This is just the beginning for us.

Pinebury Cycling Jersey

Pinebury says they believe in apparel that “provides comfort and durability to all athletes in changing conditions”. Choosing to focus on products that offer a comfortable fit, and are able to adapt to moisture and temperature fluctuations while feeling great on your body, instead of the most compressive fit for aero gains which are virtually meaningless to non-professional cyclists.

BLUETTI Makes a Splash With All-Weather Solar Generator https://bikerumor.com/bluetti-makes-a-splash-with-all-weather-solar-generator/ https://bikerumor.com/bluetti-makes-a-splash-with-all-weather-solar-generator/#comments Tue, 23 May 2023 17:43:35 +0000 https://bikerumor.com/?p=327475 The BLUETTI AC60 solar generator is a portable power station designed to handle rain, snow, sand, and dust.

The post BLUETTI Makes a Splash With All-Weather Solar Generator appeared first on Bikerumor.

]]>
The big appeal of solar generators is the ability to source power anywhere you go. One downside is that some portable power stations aren’t designed to handle exposure to the elements.

But BLUETTI designed the AC60 to be water- and dust-resistant. The brand even launched a companion battery pack that can boost the generator’s output, and, according to the brand, it shares the same performance in the elements.

Traditionally, a solar panel (or an array of them) collects energy and stores it in a portable power station. While solar panels can withstand an afternoon shower, many generators can’t.

The AC60, however, can safely run while sitting on the beach or in fresh snow, according to BLUETTI.

BLUETTI AC60 Features

 • Resists water and dust
 • Power-saving battery management system
 • Monitor status and control settings through display or app
 • Compact size
 • 6-year warranty

The AC60 is a 403Wh (lithium iron phosphate) battery that supplies 600 W of power, which can be expanded up to 2,015 Wh with add-on batteries. Its footprint measures 11.3 x 8.5 inches, and it weighs less than 19 pounds.

The generator has a water-resistance rating of IP65, which means it can withstand water jets from any angle.

The outputs include two 120V AC outlets, two USB-A ports, one USB-C port, a 12V DC outlet, and a wireless charging pad. The inputs include AC, solar, and a cigarette lighter port.

How much is 600 W of output? That’s enough to run a 60W mini fridge for five hours, charge a mobile phone 13 times, or run a lamp for more than 30 hours. Additionally, the generator can crank 1,200 W of lifting power, meaning it can run appliances like a coffeemaker or power drill for a short time.

BLUETTI made the AC60 with a fast-charge time of 45 minutes to go from zero to 80%. From there, it tops off in 1.2 hours. Conversely, a solar panel (max 200 W) can recharge the generator in three hours or less, according to the brand.

The companion app lets you control the battery’s charging and monitor its status and output levels.

Build Out More Power

The BLUETTI B80 battery pack works as a standalone power bank or an add-on to the AC60 for longer trips or power-hungry projects.

Designed as an expansion battery for the AC60, the B80 carries the same IP65 “weatherproof” rating. It also uses the same core battery to provide stable power.

A B80 battery has an 806W capacity. Linked to two B80 packs, the AC60 generator’s power storage increases from 403 to 2,015 Wh. That’s enough to power portable fridges, laptops, and mood lighting around your campsite or van setup, according to BLUETTI.

Photo c. BLUETTI

BLUETTI AC60 Specs

 • Capacity: 403 Wh (18 Ah)
 • Output: 600 W
 • Recharge: AC cable 1.2-1.7 hours (600W turbocharging); solar 2.5-3 hours
 • Operating temperature: -4 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit
 • Life cycles: 3,000-plus cycles (to 80% original capacity)
 • Dimensions (L x W x D): 11.3” x 8.5” x 9.7″
 • Weight: 18.9 lbs.
 • Price: $699 each for AC60 and B80 battery pack

All-Weather Power

BLUETTI built the AC60 solar generator to act as a power companion on your outdoor adventures. The brand says it can withstand rain, snow, sand, and dust.

That means you should be able to leave your AC60 solar generator outside without fear of an afternoon shower or dust storm ruining your power supply. For longer trips or bigger projects, a B80 battery pack (or two) should give your generator a boost.

If you’ve been looking for a small, portable power station that works in the same conditions you play, the AC60 may be the solution. Check out BLUETTI’s website to learn more about its function and performance.

Early-Bird Savings

As with many BLUETTI launches, there will be an early-bird sale from May 16 to 31. The AC60 portable generator and the B80 battery pack will be $599 each (usually $699).

While the AC60 is made to work with the weatherproof B80, it can also be bundled with the PV120 solar panel for $983, or the PV200 solar panel for $1,168. During the early-bird sale, those pairings will cost $883 and $1,048, respectively.

Teaming up again to drop some new outdoor gear, cycling’s Specialized and Swedish hiking experts, Fjällräven (pronounced (fyel-ray-vn) are at it again. This collab seems to target closer-to-home adventures.

Pieces in the collection are focusing on motion, hybrid functionality, and reliability. In hopes of optimizing both the riding and camping experience by being “comfortable and fun to use on all Spring and Summer bikepacking adventures”.

In the next 27 years or so, it’s said that two-thirds of the Earth’s population will be living in cities and towns. Lately, it seems that we’ve all been pushing to shift our priorities toward a better work/life balance. We are working to cultivate better physical and mental health as a whole, as well as working to improve the health of our planet. So it seems more important than ever to reconnect with nature.

Into the Great Nearby sends the message that adventure doesn’t have to be some elaborately planned event. Nature is everywhere. It could be at the end of a train ride, on the edge of town, around the corner, or right in your own backyard.

Ok, on to some highlights of the collection.

Kids Ride Shotgun has released the Shotgun Seat 2.0 with an increased weight capacity of 27 kg, up from the 22 kg capacity of the original. It also sees some key revisions that make it easier to use for both the child and their engine/guardian, with increased adjustability so that as the child grows, so can the seat. Retail price is £130.

Kids Ride Shotgun Seat 2.0

The Shotgun 2.0 seat, shown to us at CORE Bike, now features a quick-release axle that runs through the stunt pegs pedals, making it quicker and easier to install compared to the original which has the more rudimentary-looking nuts and bolts. With that change, the 2.0 Seat looks a lot more refined and engineered. The mounting portions are fully rubberized to ensure your carbon or alloy frame remains free of scratches.

The seat attaches to the top tube and downtube via a friction fit

The saddle is also upgraded to the Pro version, giving the child a lower ride height for added stability. The angle of the saddle is adjustable with use of an allen key. And, there is a new 40mm leg length adjustment feature, allowing the Seat 2.0 to fit taller kids.

Trevor Worsey of Kids Ride Shotgun tested this one on a 4-Day 165 km bikepacking trip through New Zealand, taking in the Timber Trail and the Moerangi Track. Well, strictly speaking, his son tested it. Pretty adventurous, right? Clearly, this isn’t just a wee gadget for a quick lap of the Trail Center on a Sunday afternoon.

For folk still not stoked on putting their toddler’s weight through the bike’s top tube, the ultimate solution would be the Kids Ride Shotgun Pro Seat that installs via clamps on the seat post and the headset, with no frame contact necessary whatsoever. That one is a little more expensive, though, retailing at £225.

kids ride shotgun pro seat raaw

The Pro Seat comes with two sets of mounting hardware, so you can switch the seat between bikes mid-ride if you need to palm the child off on your riding partner for a break! At CORE Bike, Trevor demonstrated how quick and easy the process is; I swear it took him no longer than 10 seconds to remove it from this Raaw.

kids ride shotgun bar 2.0

There’s also a 2.0 Shotgun Bar, updated with the Shotgun Pro grip that is just 19mm thick – better for smaller hands to wrap around. The clamp region is available with insert spacers to fit either 35mm or 31.8mm bars. This one retails at £35. However, if you buy the Shotgun Seat 2.0 and Handlebar 2.0 as a bundle, you get a small discount with the lot coming to £155.

I’m sure most of you know Stanley. Founded in 1913 by inventor William Stanley Jr, they invented the steel, vacuum insulated bottle that we all still use in some configuration to this day.

They’ve also been a staple of our childhood, finding them everywhere in our memories, from watching dad or gramps go to work with that iconic vacuum-insulated thermos under his arm, to steel ice chests at picnics and camping trips.

I’m a big fan of Stanley and have many of their products that I use all of the time. Including a Stanley product that I bought a few years ago that I really enjoy and use it to have a stellar #coffeeoutside experience, the Stanley Adventure All-in-One Coffee System 17oz.

I mostly use this when I’m camping as it’s perfect for my wife and me, but occasionally I’ll use it on the bike when my wife joins me. My normal coffee outside kit, which I like to use when going solo, is a small kit made by Cafflano. They have two different kits that I really like and use a lot… but with those, you have to bring a separate vessel to heat the water in. I will review those at a different time. You’ll like ’em, they’re pretty cool and I’ve never seen anyone else use ’em.

But, on with this review!

The Adventure All-In-One Coffee System

Stanley Adventure Coffee Kit
“All-in-one” in my kitchen.

The “stand-out” feature of this kit is that it is truly all-in-one. You have everything you need (sans the heat source) in a relatively small package. The unit, as it’s pictured above is 4.1″ wide by 11.2″ tall and made of 18/8 stainless steel, and is PBA-free.

Stanley Adventure Coffee outside kit
My #coffeeoutside kit.

You can carry the water that you’ll use to make the coffee in the included double-wall, vacuum-insulated bottle. With the bottle being insulated, that means that you can use it to pack out any leftover coffee as well. I often bring a separate Klean Kanteen bottle for extra water.

Boom….convenience.

Too bad the whole kit is just a smidge too big to fit in standard a water bottle cage–though something like a Salsa EXP Anything cage with some straps would do the trick.

Stanley Adventure Coffee kit coffe storage
Dry storage in the bottle top. 🙂

The kit has the pot to boil the water and the French press. The lid of the kit splits into two cups, and the screw-on bottle stopper is the small dry storage vessel for the storage of the fresh coffee grounds of your liking.

Stanley Adventure Coffee kit fuel and stove
The heat source.

The only other thing you need to bring with this kit is the heat source. Which I carry in style, with my Ruth Works handmade waxed canvas bag.

How it performs

Stanley Adventure Coffee kit heating up
The heating (healing?) starts here.

Stanley Adventure Coffee kit boiling
The boil…

The pot is pretty large and will boil enough water to fill the two included cups, two times each.

I will say that the handle needs to be in the “out” position before heating the pot….which you would think was pretty obvious, but some of the reviews of the item say otherwise.

I’ve had the kit for almost three years, I’ve used it countless times and the plastic buttons that release the handle are as good as they were when the item was new.

Stanley Adventure Coffee kit bloomin'
Bloomin’ grounds…I stir them a bit, and then set a timer for 5 mins.

Stanley Adventure Coffee kit french press
Doin’ the French Press.

The French press has a fine stainless steel screen, but not super fine. So a medium, to medium/course grind I find works best when using it.

I did try it with an espresso grind once (because I was desperate), and a lot of the grinds slipped through the screen making for a pretty gnarly, grind-filled, “cowboy” type cup o’ joe… gooood mornin’!

Stanley Adventure Coffee kit cup o' joe
Pipin’ hot cup o’ joe.

The pot also has a nice spout to help keep the pours mess-free. There is just a lot of nice, attention to detail in this kit.

Stanley Adventure Coffee kit extra
Leftovers come home with me.

I’ve really enjoyed my Stanley Adventure All-In-One System. It has served me very well, countless times over the last few years.

I would recommend it to anyone that takes part in bicycle-supported coffee outside adventures, or anyone who is “out and about” quite often and would benefit from a do-it-all kit that can make a really good cup o’ joe.

This kit, Stanley says, will keep your stuff hot for 15 hours, cold for 13 hours, or iced for whopping 48 hours!

Coming this September is Fidlock’s very first attempt at a hydration bladder. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Fidlock product without the use of magnets somewhere; here, three magnetic bars that run along the full width of the Hermetic Hydration Bladder’s wide opening snap shut, sealing the watery contents inside very rapidly for leak-free riding and spill-free refills.

Fidlock Hermetic Hydration Bladder

Fidlock’s magnetic closure systems are successfully employed on everything from cageless water bottles, to convertible full face helmets, to tool boxes; now, they’re sealing the deal on an all-new hydration bladder.

The Fidlock Hermetic Hydration Bladder will be available in 1.5 L and 2.5 L capacity options, both with tall, narrow dimensions suited to riding packs, as opposed to hip-packs. While Fidlock’s line of Hermetic dry bags are designed to keep water out, the Hermetic Hydration Bladder is designed to keep water in, relying on the same magnetic seal technology.

Nothing can go wrong, they say.

fidlock hermetic hydration bladder refill

All three magnetic bars close automatically and seal the contents, so even if you drop the hydration bladder mid-refill, it wont spill a drop as the magnets will spontaneously snap back together to seal the contents. Fidlock tell us the high-quality materials are perfectly coordinated and reliably welded to ensure that not a single drop of water drop can get outside the bladder. An extra snap buckle sits external to the main closure to ensure the whole package is entirely leak-proof.

The bladder itself is made of a BPA-free TPU for neutral-tasting water, and comes with the drinking tube. The opening runs almost the full width of the hydration bladder to help make both refill and cleaning easier.

Pricing & Availability

The Fidlock Hermetic Hydration Bladder will be available this September in two sizes; 1.5 L and 2.5 L, both retailing at 59,99 €.

Kitsbow has launched an updated version of their popular long-ride bib shorts. The Coleman Valley Pocket Bib Shorts now feature — you guessed it — pockets. The pockets in question are located on the thigh and made of mesh so that moisture from your exertion doesn’t condense on your phone as you grind up your local hill.

“Nice shorts.” “Thanks, they have pockets.”

The stretchy pockets are big enough to accommodate bars, phones, headphones, or any other small item you might want to snag on the go. The bib shorts also include the features found on the original Coleman Valley Bib Shorts — like comfy mesh straps and back and a gripper hem.

A close-up of a man sticking an energy bar into the pocket of the kitsbow bib.

Here’s the full list of specs, per Kitsbow’s product page:

 • Industry-leading Elastic Interface 3D formed pad for all-day in-the-saddle comfort. Pad incorporates a special ultra-high density perineal insert (an innovative structure featuring a multidirectional curvature that delivers perfect fit and great stability, and proper ischiatic support in the saddle) and a special “encased” shaping in the top part of the chamois which allows for improved fit and greater privacy
 • Highly breathable and soft mesh upper and straps are fully edged and finished for maximal comfort, in fact, you won’t even notice them
 • Two convenient thigh mesh pockets
 • Lightweight nylon compression fabric provides exceptional compression, wicking, durability, and breathability
 • 30% spandex provides high power compression to support leg muscles
 • UPF 50 sun protection
 • The hem elastic has a custom silicone gripper that keeps the hem or warmers in place
 • Sewn by artisan Makers, one at a time, in Old Fort, NC

Our favorite part about the Kitsbow Coleman Valley Bib Shorts is that they are made to order in North Carolina. Using this model, Kitsbow minimizes waste by only producing what they need to fill orders. Kitsbow Coleman Valley Bib Shorts come in six sizes and cost $249.

The partnership between California’s Specialized and Sweden’s Fjällräven has already resulted in a new portmanteau for the outdoor fashion industry: “Caliswede.”

In an attempt to break into the highly lucrative market of bike gear, Fjällräven has married its signature style to the design experience of Specialized. Both companies have focused on their niche for decades, with Specialized starting about 14 years after Fjällräven made its first backpack in 1960.

Now, the brands put their experience, design prowess, and home country names together in a new collection.

Fjällräven maintains a reliable customer base among both hardcore hikers and Instagram fashionistas. So it won’t be surprising if the company’s branding and design partnership with Specialized becomes another hit.

After the partnership’s initial announcement in March, this month’s gear drop offers all-weather jackets and nifty “caves” aimed at casual riders commuting to work or going on day trips. That’s also clear from the marketing campaign’s slogan: The Great Nearby.

“With The Great Nearby, nature is at the end of a train ride, on the edge of town, or even just around the corner,” the two companies said in a news release. “From next-level on-bike storage solutions and bags to technical apparel and accessories, this exchange is based on the unfailing belief that the more people who discover the joy that comes from being in nature, the more the world will benefit.”

The Räven Anorak combines Fjällräven’s classic jacket, first launched in the 1970s, with Specialized’s on-bike fit. It includes the classic waxed G-1000 fabric to block out light rain and wind. And it gets reflective details for greater visibility on the road, plus a stowable hood.

Cool Cave

The other featured product is the Cool Cave, a durable pannier ‘bucket’ that’s easy to attach to the front or rear rack.

Specialized cool cave bag options

You can use it as is, or there are a few variants like the Cave Pack and Cave Tote seek to make storage easy and keep your snacks dry. all of the options are designed to fit perfectly in the Cool Cave or cover the top, providing multiple ways to carry your gear with ease.

Other products in the drop include wool socks and T-shirts emblazoned with the brands’ combined logos. Stay tuned for the next update of the Caliswede partnership.

Want to live the #vanlife without actually buying a van? Or maybe you just want to have a pro cooking station at your next outdoor event? Whatever the reason, Yakima’s newest EXO accessory turned a lot of heads at the Sea Otter Classic. That standout piece at the Yakima booth was the new EXO Open Range Camp Kitchen — a full kitchen that works with the Yakima EXO modular hitch system.

Yakima Open Kitchen full setup on EXO rack

Essentially a basecamp in a box, the new Open Range Camp Kitchen comes in two main options with many accessories available for purchase. The US-made toto-molded box is designed to be mounted to an EXO SwingBase or EXO TopShelf rack setup using the EXO cleat system. If you don’t have an EXO rack, you can also just store the box in your trunk or truck bed.

If you’re using the EXO TopShelf mount, the box will already be at the right height and you can just open the front of the sealed box, fold out the accessory side tables, and get to cooking.

yakima Open Kitchen side studio view

If you’re using the lower SwingBase position (we believe this should allow you to use the TopShelf position for two bikes), you’ll need to remove the box from the rack and mount it to the accessory four-leg stand. This is also how you would use the system without an EXO rack.

The OpenRange Leg Kit is available separately for $199.99 and the telescoping legs adjust the height from 20-33″.

The Yakima Open Range Camp Kitchen comes in a base model, including the OpenRange Camp box with a lantern hook and organizing shelf (pictured inside) for $750.

For those looking for the whole experience, the Yakima EXO Open Range Camp Kitchen is also available in a deluxe version. The deluxe version comes with a wood side table with cutting board, collapsible wash basin with drain hose, metal cook side table with flexible fuel hose, a hanging fuel canister pouch, and the CookOut 2-Burner stove.

Yakima Open Kitchen table connection

The whole Open Range Camp Kitchen Deluxe experience comes in at $1,199 — excluding stemware, plates, and cutlery. If you don’t go for the Deluxe version, many of the accessories can still be purchased separately with the OpenRange Wood and Metal Side Tables and CookOut Camp stove going for $149 each.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Vans have entered a new era of efficiency and environmentally conscience emission standards with a shift to a fully four-cylinder gas and diesel lineup that will hit the road early next year.

Mercedes-Benz announced the new lineup at the 2022 Work Truck Week. In addition to the 4-cylinder OM654 engine, the new vans will come with an all-new all-wheel-drive system and an upgraded transmission.

Couple setting next to a lake wit ha Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van.
The new lineup of Mercedes-Benz Spinners vans features the same ground clearance, approach and departure angles as its predecessor.

The OM654 will give drivers more torque and smoother acceleration while cutting back on noise and vibration common in larger rigs.

The vans will be available in 164 hp or 155 hp options. The engines feature a combination of aluminum block and steel pistons, NANOSLIDE cylinder coating that reduces friction, a near-engine exhaust and a multi-way exhaust gas circulation system that combine to result in better fuel efficiency and lower emissions compared to predecessors.

Mercedes-Benz 2023 model sprinter vans will be available in the U.S. early next year. Sprinter-based camper vans soon to follow?

By switching to the new 9G-TRONIC 9-speed transmission, the 2023 model year vans will have more gears and larger gear ratios than the 7G-TRONIC transmission. That translates to quicker acceleration and easier downshifting.

Additionally, an all-wheel-drive systemwide replace the current 4×4 system to give the new line an edge in endurance and power over varied surfaces. Ground clearance, approach and departure angles and breaking angles will stay the same, so drivers can expect the same level of maneuverability they’ve come to expect in Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans, just in a more efficient package.

Outfitting a van with all the amenities you need to stay organized in a tiny space is a daunting undertaking.

Cabinets and hard-shell cases take up a lot of space, and can be extremely pricey, and sifting through piles of gear and bags on the floorboard doesn’t help anyone.

Aspen Frontiers offers a simple solution that will help van-lifers achieve the functionality of mounted cabinets, but drastically cut the price and level off the expertise needed for installation. The company has designed a rack made to hang 40-liter Patagonia duffel bags from the ceiling of a van.

detail view of the Aspen Frontiers Rack.
Aspen Frontier’s duffel rack is designed to turn duffel bags into mounted cabinets in vans and campers.

With two bolts, the rack attaches to the vehicle, allowing users to slide the straps of their duffle bags into an elevated position that frees up floor and lower wall space for other gear. A third screw on one of the arms of the rack keeps the bag in place while in motion.

Unlike fixed cabinets or heavy rigid bags, the duffels are easy to strip off when needed. Aspen Frontiers also sells a rigid insert to create a more stable platform for gear.

The racks are specifically designed to fit Patagonia’s 40-liter duffels, so other bags won’t work. But the company had hinted at plans to expand to other bags in the future.

Aspen Frontiers’ rack is specifically designed to fit the Patagonia Black Hole 40-liter duffel bag.

Until then, the required Patagonia duffel runs for MSRP $129. The rack goes for MSRP $95. The company also sells them in four packs for MSRP $340. Altogether, mounting one bag runs $224, with a bit of savings if you grab the four pack. Patagonia, however, doesn’t offer four-bag bundles. That being said, the duffel rack still will likely come in for less than most fixed cabinet options (and you can always use the duffel outside of the van as well).

One of the challenges of off-grid camping with modern devices and creature comforts is maintaining enough power. If your camper van or adventure rig doesn’t have a full auxiliary battery bank, then you need something portable. And the quicker it can charge, the better off you’ll be…and that’s where EcoFlow comes in.

EcoFlow’s portable power stations have tons of power, yet recharge extremely quickly, even from solar panels, thanks to LFP battery technology.

They can be tethered together to increase total output, run time, or both. That lets you run high-draw electronics like a refrigerator, coffee maker, or hair dryer.

Here’s a quick EcoFlow product overview that explains what all they can do:

With hundreds of acres of mountainous terrain, trails, a lake, and wide open spaces, there’s room for the whole family to try all the latest gear.

UPDATE: From OGB: “In light of the current rise of COVID-19 cases and the very contagious Delta variant in the WNC region, the Outdoor Gear Builders has decided to postpone the 7th annual Get In Gear Fest in order to keep our community safe and not contribute to the rise in cases. We look forward to hosting our in-person Get in Gear Festival from April 23rd – 24th for a full weekend of fun over Earth Day, featuring exceptional gear, brands, and outdoor interactive experiences.”

Hosted at Camp Rockmont, there’ll be music, food trucks, beer (and other beverages), and limited overnight lodging opportunities. Osprey already offers some of the best hydration packs out there. But there’s always room for improvement. For the popular Raptor, that includes the addition of a D30 BP4 Level 1 back guard. Meaning Osprey’s new Raptor Pro pack may be the brand’s most comprehensive option to date.

The Raptor Pro bike ($200 MSRP) pack won’t hit the market until Spring 2022, but this is what we know so far.

Osprey Raptor Pro Specs

The Raptor Pro pack features sustainable, bluesign materials, PFAS/PFC-free durable water repellant finish, and the included hydration reservoir is BPA-free.

In addition to the D3O CE Level 1 full-back protector, Osprey fits the Raptor Pro pack with the following:

 • Fully padded front shield + upper compression for full-face helmets
 • LidLock bike helmet attachment
 • Secure side panel pockets + dual compression for storage of leg/arm protection
 • Scratch-free heat-embossed zippered slash pocket for sunglasses and electronics
 • Stretch mesh zippered hip belt pockets
 • MTB-specific shoulder straps
 • Hydration sleeve with direct-zip access + hose path
 • Hydraulics LT 2.5-liter reservoir (included)
 • Sternum strap magnet for reservoir hose/mouthpiece
 • Bike tool organization (main compartment) + roll-up tool organizer (removable)
 • Light attachment loop and a reflective patch

Osprey claims that the protective panel exceeds CE Level 1 certification. Through proprietary technologies, Osprey “engineers materials that are rate-sensitive, soft, and flexible as well as highly shock absorbent. This lightweight, exceptionally soft, and flexible design means the back protector provides riding comfort without sacrificing durability and protection while the highly ventilated geometry delivers maximum breathability.”

While many hydration packs rely on less-flexible inserts for protection, it sounds like the Osprey D3O insert will remain flexible under normal conditions. But like other D3O products, it should stiffen upon impact, protecting your back. The design also includes quite a few perforations for increased ventilation.

For more info on Osprey and its ever-evolving line of packs, check Osprey’s site.

Sena Technologies, Inc. has been a leader in the powersports connectivity and communications market for a long time, with their add-on comms solutions and integrated designs appearing in many of the top manufacturer’s offerings. Many may not know that they also offer cycling helmets that deliver many of the same features that made them a leader in the powersports market. Now, Sena has opened up the option to stay connected no matter what helmet a rider chooses to wear with the new Pi universal intercom system

Sena Pi Unit

The new Pi Bluetooth Intercom allows the rider to rider communication via intercom – not to be confused with making a phone call, though it also features this function – the intercom is a 2-way HD system that functions much more like a walkie-talkie, with a range of a quarter-mile or 400 meters. 2 riders with Pi units or any of Sena’s Bluetooth integrated cycling helmets like the R1 or Rumba can connect for clear conversation while riding independently of cell phone or data service. I’ve used the R1 and Rumba to give my trailing riding partners a heads-up for an upcoming trail feature while mountain biking, and it’s saved me from a few detours when following other riders on a new trail.

Sena Pi on 6D Profile

In addition, the Pi unit features Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity, allowing you to listen to your favorite playlist, hear GPS navigation instructions, and even make or receive phone calls – all hands free. I tested the R1’s phone call capability out on the road in high wind and was impressed by the noise attenuation that the mic has – calls were surprisingly clear and connectivity never had an issue.

Sena Pi on 6D Helmet
The Sena Pi installs quickly on any sports helmet with straps up to 18mm wide

The one qualm I had with the R1 was the fit – my noggin is right in between sizes for their headforms, and the Pi unit opens up the same technologies to any helmet-wearer, adding function to your favorite lid. To install, you simply attach the Pi unit to any helmet with a strap width of up to 18mm (0.7 inches). Two button layout keeps things simple and easy to use on the fly while riding.

The Sena Pi unit is available now for an MSRP of $99 USD.

Outdoor gear maker Sea To Summit is expanding into lightweight technical tents with a full range of modular Alto & Telos TR tents that could be perfect for year-round bikepacking adventurers. Developed to sleep anywhere from 1-3 people, the ultralight Sea to Summit tents all share the same Tension Ridge design concept that provides extra volume inside, while allowing them to be pitched in several different configurations to suit all weather conditions.

Sea to Summit Alto & Telos TR ultralight, modular tents

After three years of development, Sea to Summit thinks their Tension Ridge (TR) tent system offers a better space & ventilation solution for lightweight backpacking and bikepacking. The modular layout creates a setup that maximizes space, ventilation, and versatility – all the while keeping weight to a minimum so it’s easy to pack when you are crunched for hauling space.

Tension Ridge architecture – Tech details

Sea to Summit Alto and Telos TR lightweight tents, Tension Ridge detail

Boiled down to the core of it, the green top pole of the Tension Ridge system angles up and away from the conventional arched tent poles, creating more wide volume in the top of your tent without much extra material and with little extra weight. While many ultralight tents feel quite claustrophobic, as they hand close to you sleeping bag to keep materials to a minimum, the Sea To Summit TR tents expand a bit more upwards. The inverted TR ‘brow pole’ is the idea of Jake Lah who founded and heads design at DAC, a global leader in manufacturing tent poles.

Sea to Summit Alto and Telos TR lightweight tents, Tension Ridge modular 3-season ultralight bikepacking tent

The result looks like a nice balance of weight and internal space. These aren’t going to be the absolute lightest bikepacking tent in the world. There will always be some tiny, almost-bivouac option with carbon poles and unobtanium stakes. But with realistic 1-person setups from under 1000g, 2-person around 1200g, and competitive pricing (read: not quite cheap) the new Sea to Summit tents look like a nice new option.

Sea to Summit Alto and Telos TR lightweight tents, Tension Ridge modular 3-season ultralight bikepacking tent, setup options

Plus, the designs work well in modular setups, where you pack just the basics depending on the level of shelter and protection you think you need. Go superlight for fast fair-weather trips with just the adjustably-vented Fly and Poles (plus Footprint if dew or rain are a concern). Run just the main Inner tent and Poles if you are lucky enough to have pleasant dry weather and just need to keep the critters out. Or go for the full classic build with Fly, Inner tent, Poles & Footprint to get maximum protection from the weather. You can even pitch the fly first, and fill everything else in after to stay dry making camp in the rain.

Sea to Summit Alto and Telos TR lightweight tents, Tension Ridge modular 3-season ultralight bikepacking tent, in the details

There appear to be plenty of other helpful details in the tents including intuitive color-coded pole attachment, quick-connect nesting attachment of individual tent elements, a ‘lightbar’ that uses the pole bag to diffuse headlamp light inside for soft ambient light at night, an optional gear loft to stash more inside the tent at night, and two footprints that let you pick from going just under the tent or extending for the vestibule as well.

FairShare modular separate stuff sacks

Another bikepacking-friendly feature of the smaller tents, the Alto just uses individual stuff sacks for each separate item, so you can cram them into whichever bikepacking pack still has extra room.

Construction details & lightweight claims

Sea to Summit Alto and Telos TR lightweight tents, Tension Ridge modular 3-season ultralight bikepacking tent, open

All of the tents are constructed of lightweight nylon & mesh, with 15D silicone & polyether urethane-coated flies, and heavier 20D sil-PeU coated nylon floors with taped seams. The one-person Alto TR1 gets one door and one vestibule. But all the other multi-person tents get two doors & vestibules so you won’t have to climb over your adventure-mates.

Key minimum complete trail weights with just the fly, inner, tent & poles start at 938g for the Alto TR1, 1156g for the Alto TR2, 1482g for the Telos TR2, and 1921g for the Telos TR3 (no stuff sacks, stakes, or extra guy lines). Expect at another 50-75g to at least get the stakes you’ll need for a secure setup (full weight claims below.)

Our compatriots over at GearJunkie.com have taken a first look at the mid-sized Telos 2 for backpacking, but we’d probably be most likely to try to stuff one of the lighter Alto 1 or 2 options into our bike bags for some of our next bikepacking trips.

Two basic tent types are offered: The semi-freestanding Alto for 1 or 2 people requires stakes at its corners to fully spread out. And the more freestanding dome Telos for 2 or 3 people. Both versions come in a standard ultralight 3 season version with an almost completely mesh Inner tent, or a slightly heavier 3+ season variant that uses a fabric Inner tent to trap more heat in for cool weather camping.

Sea to Summit Alto and Telos TR lightweight tents, Tension Ridge modular 3-season ultralight bikepacking tent Tech details: pricing, sizing & options

Pricing including the Fly, Inner & Poles starts at $399 for the lightest, smallest Alto TR1, $449 for the Alto TR2, $499 for the Telos TR2, and $599 for the Telos TR3. Adding the optional footprints will tack on an extra $50-70. All of the tents will be available to pre-order direct from Sea To Summit here starting next Monday, March 15. And those pre-orders are expected to ship to campers starting the first of May.

Update: Sea to Summit is already shipping the new tents ahead of schedule (mid-April), so check out any of the links here to pick the Alto or Telos setup that’s right for your adventure.

Finnish company Trailander have developed a mountain bike trail groomer for maintaining trails in snowy conditions. Pulled along by a snow mobile, this steel frame contraption smooths over the surface of the snow, reinstating the route of snow-buried trails, or creating entirely new ones. If you’re an avid fat biker, you may want to petition your local trail association to invest in one of these bad boys…

Trailander Trail Groomer for snowy MTB trails

trailander bike route plane trail groomer

The Trailander Bike Route Plane was developed in Seinäjoki, Finland, a place where a fat bike is surely a must-have in any committed off-road rider’s stable. This snow groomer was created to overcome the trail riding challenges presented by several feet of snow.

The Trailander Trail Groomer features rounded edges to neatly finish the edges of tracks

Trailander say the groomer can be used to maintain berms, create angles and to straighten out the trail. Height and angle adjustments of the Groomer can be made on-the-fly, with the option of using a rake and V-plow to help to deal with different types of ice and snow.

The plough is 2.9m long and 1.1m wide and clears an 80cm wide section of trail as it is dragged along. It is made of a Docol steel frame and comes with two replaceable blades. Rubber shock absorbers damp the connection between the Groomer and snow mobile.

Burley have updated their affordable Minnow single-child kids bike trailer, renaming it the Burley Bee. Aside from the name, little has changed save for the price (+$10) and color. However, for those with a larger family, a two-child version is now available for $299.99. In other news, the popular D’Lite X that doubles as a stroller is now available as a single-child bike trailer too.

Burley Bee Kids Bike Trailer

The double Burley Bee weighs a claimed 9.1 kg including tow-bar, hitch and flag

The Burley Bee is their most affordable kids bike trailer by a good $100 margin. It is a bike-only trailer, unlike the more expensive Honey Bee, D’Lite X, Encore X and Cub that also double up as strollers. Burley have introduced the Bee as both a single-child and two-child kids bike trailer, with just a $20 price difference between the two.

The interior seated height and width come in at 69.9cm and 57.1cm, respectively

The Bee runs 20″ wheels that feature a push button release for quick removal. A 16″ plus sized wheel kit is a $149.99 upgrade if you plan to take the bike trailer off-roading or even over snowy ground.

Hammock style seats provide passive suspension for riders’ comfort

An adjustable five-point harness system secures your child in the cockpit, which is itself encapsulated by a full internal aluminum roll cage for protection in an accident. UPF 50+ tinted windows and a 600D polyester wind and water-resistant cover shield the occupant from the elements. The front cover and rear windows can open up to maximize ventilation. The Bee also comes with a safety flag for visibility.

The Burley Bee has ample storage space with interior pockets in both the cargo and child seating area. When you’re off the bike, a handy flex connector allows bike to lay flat while the trailer remains upright.

Burley D’Lite X Single

burley dlite x kids bike trailer singleThe Burley D’Lite X is a far more premium kids bike trailer as compared to the Bee, and its $749.99 price tag certainly reflects that. Padded seats, headrests, adjustable suspension and reclining seats make for what should be a very comfortable ride for your child when you venture off the sidewalk onto rougher terrain.

The Burley D’Lite X is now available in a single occupancy version in addition to the standard double.

The Cinq Plug5 Pure is a “top-cap” design thus, it works with virtually all 1-1/8″ upper steerer diameter forks, regardless of material or wall thickness. How come? As with the Plug5 Plus, the new Cinq Plug5 Pure model features a USB-C charging port. So, it will use the Dynamo’s generated energy to power any USB-chargeable device. Charge your smart phone, Garmin (other GPS units are available) or lights as you pedal. A Rotary Door twist-lock mechanism covers the USB port when not in use, sheltering it from the rain.

cinq plug5 pure uses dynamo charge garmin while riding excellent bikepacking gear

The Plug5 Pure automatically detects when you turn on your light, dynamically negotiates the optimal charging current with your device, or optimizes itself to get the last bit of current out of your dynamo. The maximum current it can supply is 700mA. An LED on the top of the aluminium housing indicates charge status.

Will the Cinq Plug5 Pure fit my fork, and how does it mount?

This top cap mounted power supply replaces the existing star-fangled nut or expander inside your fork’s steerer tube, utilizing the Aheadset Expander to remove play from your headset. It works the same as any standard top-cap: the outer diameter of the Plug rests on top of the stem or the spacers above the stem.

cinq plug5 pure exploded diagram aheadset expander replaces star nutThe usability of the Cinq Plug5 Plus was greatly limited by the presence of the buffer battery that was housed inside the fork’s steerer tube. It’s certainly not a bad place to store a battery, after all it is more sheltered from the elements there.

cinq plug5 plus internal battery

However, its diameter meant it would only fit inside steerer tubes with an inner diameter greater than 24.1mm, and those with sufficient length to house the power module with access for internal wiring.

The new Cinq Plug5 Pure does away with the internal buffer battery so it can be used with virtually all 1-1/8″ internal diameter steerer tubes (tapered or straight), including carbon and thicker-walled aluminium ones.

But I need a buffer battery

For long bikepacking journeys, you’re going to want a reserve power supply. That’s where the Smart Power Pack-II comes in.

It’s essentially the buffer battery, except now it’s an externally-mounted separate product. Cinq say it is the perfect solution for high-drain smart phones and devices that need more (or more consistent) power than a dynamo hub alone can supply.

The Smart Power Pack-II charges at speeds as low as 8 km/h

Cinq have added a couple extra useful features to it, too. It boasts an LED flashlight, emergency tail light and an SOS flashing function. As it’s not tucked away inside the steerer, you can easily remove it from the bar and continue to charge devices in your tent overnight.

Now, maybe more than ever, adventurers are rediscovering the road trip. With travel options limited, getting in the car to socially distance in the wilderness is quite appealing. That raises the question – how will you transport all of your gear? If you’ve already maxed out your cargo capacity and you’re looking for more, the new Yakima EXO System seems like it’s worth a look, whatever your adventures bring.

Yakima EXO System modular cargo storage

Truly a modular hitch system, Yakima calls their EXO family a “new era” in innovation. Everything starts with the SwingBase – a 2″ hitch mounted base that includes a swing-away adapter built in. From there, you have a number of options. If you want to maximize your cargo space, you can add the EXO TopShelf which can carry all of the same accessories as the SwingBase.

Yakima EXO System modular cargo storage

Which allows for setups like two bikes up top with the EXO DoubleUp, and the EXO GearLocker down below. It appears the system will be limited to two bikes, which is understandable with a considerable amount of weight from both the system and storage underneath. It will be interesting to see what the maximum cargo weight will be – with two bike capacity and the Cargo accessory, the Saris SuperClamp EX rack is limited to 120lbs of cargo on the platform itself.

Or you could run two stacked EXO GearLockers (add the GearTotes for easy loading and unloading)…

Or a GearLocker below and the EXO GearWarrior (with or without wheels) up top…

Or a GearLocker and the EXO BackDeck up top to create the perfect shelf for a camp kitchen. There’s also the EXO SnowBank for carrying skis and snowboards up top for the winter crowd.

All that gear blocking your tail lights? Add the EXO LitKit for some added visibility.

We’re told that the system will officially launch in Spring 2021, with expected prices listed below. Look for more details closer to the official launch.

EXO Swingbase – $499
EXO Topshelf – $379
EXO Gear Locker – $399
EXO GearTotes – $49
EXO LitKit – $149
EXO BackDeck – $129
EXO DoubleUp – $479
EXO SnowBank – $279
EXO GearWarrior – $349

Garmin’s latest premium Fēnix 6 Pro Solar and Tactix Delta Solar Edition adventure smart watches track your biking & other activities with full mapping & routing, using their solar-powered lenses to extend the time between needing to plug in to recharge! Or without maps, the new Instinct Solar smart watch delivers much of the same tracking features for less than half the price.

Garmin Solar-powered, activity-tracking smart watches

Solar powered watches have been around for decades, but now as we become more dependent on smart watches for GPS & heart rate tracking of biking and other sport activities, even navigation on the go, energy demands continue to increase. Paired with smart mobile phones, smart watches often help us (me) break the cycle of constantly looking at my phone throughout the day for everything from telling time to checking notifications. But that only works when the smart watch stays charged. Last fall, Garmin added solar charging to their big dial $1150 Fenix 6X Pro Solar watch.

Now that same clear solar-charging lens comes to four more smart watches across a more affordable price range – the Fenix 6 Pro Solar, Fenix 6S Pro Solar, Tactix Delta Solar Edition & Instinct Solar – all with significantly increased, solar-augmented battery life, so buyers can “Do What They Love Longer”.

Garmin Fēnix 6 & 6S Pro Solar GPS tracking smart watches

The fēnix 6 is pretty much Garmin’s peak high-end GPS smart watch combining activity tracking, mountain biking-specific metrics & multiple other sport-specific apps; wrist-based heart rate tracking; animated workouts and other training features; sleep, breathing & hydration tracking, full color topo mapping, turn-by-turn navigation & round-trip routing; smart notifications, music streaming, wireless payment & much more – all on your wrist. There’s actually plenty more features that will do most everything you could want in a smart watch.

activity-tracking smart watches,

Adding to its sixth generation, the $850 fēnix 6S Pro Solar (42mm case) and $850 fēnix 6 Pro Solar (47mm case) join last autumn’s fēnix 6X Pro Solar (51mm case). These each add Garmin’s latest Power Glass transparent solar charging lens and customizable Power Manager modes to extend how long all of that tech works between charges.

How long does Fēnix 6 Pro Solar power last?

activity-tracking smart watches,

Unfortunately of course, the solar charging can’t keep all of that running indefinitely. Garmin claims the addition of solar charging extends regular full smartwatch mode by just two days up to 16 days with all-day wear and 3 hours outside every day (up from 14 days without solar power). In regular GPS tracking mode you are likely to get an extra four hours of solar power up to 40 hours of full tracking while using the watch outside in bright conditions. There’s also a battery saver GPS tracking mode that gives 21 hours of extra tracking, up to 93 hours in the sun. The biggest boost though is probably for people who want to pare down to Battery Saver Watch Mode, that adds 32 days with solar charging, up to 80 days between charges for the most basic functions away from civilization.

Garmin Tactix Delta Solar Edition GPS tracking smart watch

If the fēnix 6 is somehow not smart enough for you, the tactical $1100 Tactix Delta – Solar Edition GPS smart watch completes pretty much all the same functions, plus the ability to “carry out field ops undetected with tactical-specific features such as night vision compatibility” if that is your type of thing. There’s even an optional $300 “Applied Ballistics Calculator” function upgrade because, why not… I guess?

activity-tracking smart watches,

All the same track & smart connectivity, plus stealth, jumpmaster, expedition, gold course modes & a kill switch that “if security becomes an issue, wipes the device of all user memory”, seriously. Oh yeah, and it gets the photovoltaic Power Glass transparent solar charging lens and customizable Power Manager modes.

How long does Tactix Delta Solar power last?

activity-tracking smart watches,

In the same vein as the fēnix but boosted with improved energy efficiency, the Tactix Delta Solar boost a bit more – three extra days up to 24 days in solar smartwatch mode. Regular GPS tracking mode adds four more hours of solar power up to 66 hours of full tracking, or an extra 28 hours of solar power up to 148 hours of solar-assisted battery saver GPS tracking. Expedition GPS activity tracking extends ten days to 56 days with solar power, and Battery Saver Watch Mode extends forty days to 120 days for your most remote travels.

Garmin Instinct Solar affordable GPS tracking smart watch

All of those are quite over the top, but at less than half the cost of even the solar Fenix, the (still not cheap) $400 Instinct Solar GPS smart watch still offers wrist-based heart rate, GPS/GLONASS/Galileo activity tracking, sport-specific data profiles, smart connectivity & notifications, and even breadcrumb return-to-start mapping in a much more affordable watch. Special Surf & Tactical versions are also available. And yes, they all get photovoltaic solar Power Glass charging.

How long does Instinct Solar power last?

Garmin Solar-powered activity-tracking smart watches, Fenix 6 Pro Solar, Tactix Delta Solar, Instinct Solar

In fact, thanks to its simplified monochrome display and pared back functionality, solar power gives it even bigger boosts. It adds thirty(!) extra days up to 54 days in solar smartwatch mode, eight extra hours to 38 hours in regular GPS tracking mode, seventy-five (!) extra hours up to 145 hours of battery saver GPS tracking, and thirty (!) extra days up to 68 days in solar-assisted Expedition GPS activity tracking mode. And in base Battery Saver Watch Mode solar power extends the battery only fifty-six days up to an indefinite period. So as long as you get three hours out in the sun every day, you wouldn’t ever need to charge it.

All of the new Garmin Solar-powered Fenix 6, Tactix Delta & Instinct activity-tracking smart watches are available now in several different color and wristband options, through all Garmin distribution channels.

Garmin’s multisport GPS watches are the choice for athletes and adventurers willing to push themselves through the next mile or over the next mountain. Using our solar capabilities, the new Instinct, fēnix 6 and 6S, and tactix Delta solar watches provide extraordinary battery life and give customers the ability to follow their passion to the sunset and further,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “In addition to the solar charging capabilities, these editions are full of updated and unique features. From new camouflage design patterns to surfing activity profiles, there is something for everyone with the new members of Garmin’s solar family.

I’d never even heard of tree tents until now. Boy, am I stoked. It seems I’ve been living under a rock, because these elevated campgrounds are definitely a thing. Tentsile have been making floating Tree Tents since 2010. Tyler interviewed the founder, Alex Shirley-Smith back in 2018 – get the Podcast here.

This Spring sees the launch of their 3rd generation Tree Tent, now a ten-strong range of floating hang-out pads to choose from. We take a look the raft of updates, including the all-new Safari Vista, Trillium XL Hammocks and ground conversion kits.

The post Review: Sealskinz Waterproof Heated Cycle Gloves and Waterproof All-Weather Socks appeared first on Bikerumor.

]]>
When the weather gets cold or wet, having good gear can make the difference between an enjoyable ride or the begrudged decision to sit one out. As winter set in across British Columbia, I got anxious to try out Sealskinz’s Waterproof Heated Cycle Gloves and Waterproof All Weather socks.

The heated gloves quickly proved to be one of those pieces that extended my tolerance for cold weather rides. Without too much bulk, the gloves provide enough heat that temperatures above the freezing point are too warm for them! I was also very impressed with how waterproof Sealskinz’s socks are; your feet can be submerged in water for several minutes without soaking through, so unless you’re crossing raging rivers on an epic ride, your little piggies won’t be pruned when you get home.

Sealskinz Waterproof Heated Cycle Glove:

The Waterproof Heated Cycle Gloves are made with a three-layer construction to repel water, keep you warm and resist wear and tear. Inside, Primaloft Gold insulation makes these gloves pretty warm even without their electric heaters activated.

The palms provide some padding at the base of your fingers and on the lower palm, but are otherwise quite thin. The liner and membrane are bonded to the palm and fingers to prevent the liner from pulling out or squirming around as you ride, ensuring good grip control. Other details include Velcro cuff closures and stealth reflective panels on the outer sides of each glove.

The gloves offer High, Medium and Low heat settings, which you toggle through via a single switch on the gloves’ backsides. The switch is easy to access and operate, and its LED lighting clearly shows which heat setting you’re using.

The heating elements are powered by rechargeable polymer batteries that stow away in zippered pockets on the underside of each cuff. The first full charge takes 12 hours, but subsequent charges take 6 hours. The fully charged gloves will provide heat for up to 2.5 hours on High, 3.5 hours on Medium, and 5.5 hours on Low. The batteries will function in temperatures down to -20°c.

Please note; due to the electronics these gloves cannot be machine washed, tumble dried, or dry cleaned. While their exterior is waterproof, the gloves cannot be submerged in water or used if fully saturated.

Ride Impressions:

My first ride with the heated gloves was on a zero degree (Celsius) day. I rode across town and then climbed for about 15 minutes with the heaters on low. At this point my blood was flowing, so I switched off the heat and climbed for another 20 minutes. Even with the heaters off I was surprised to find my hands were now getting sweaty, so I swapped out the Sealskinz gloves and descended in a thinner, wind-resistant pair.

At 0°c the gloves kept my hands warm right away, even before the heaters got cooking. The heat takes a few minutes to become noticeable, but once warmed up you can feel the heat on all your fingers and the back of your hand. At this temperature, I was still only using the Low setting.

Due to sudden snowfall, I had few chances to ride with these gloves in colder temps… so I took them XC skiing instead! In temps around -8°c my hands started out a bit chilly, but after about 10 minutes the heaters (on Low) warmed my hands and kept them comfortable. I tried the warmest setting on another ski day, and it seemed to heat up the gloves a bit quicker than the Low setting.

The coldest temperatures I got to try the gloves in was about -10°c, and I didn’t even need to use the Medium or High heat settings to keep my hands warm. I have no doubt with the heat cranked up further, these gloves could defeat any temperature their battery is rated for (if not beyond). Also, I found Sealskinz’s claims regarding battery life to be accurate.

The Waterproof Heated Cycle Glove’s fit worked well for my hands, with just a tiny bit of extra space all around. I followed Sealskinz’s fit guide, and the Mediums (size 9) they sent me were ideal.

The palms are a bit thicker than a typical riding glove, but not by much. Grip feel and control was very good, and the only time the gloves bulk became noticeable was while lifting a finger to grab the brake lever. Their multi-layer construction doesn’t flex as freely as a thin summer glove, but they are still impressively dexterous for how warm they are.

The cuffs on these gloves are long, and with the batteries in they’re not super slim. If you ride in a jacket with tight cuffs and arms, fitting the gloves underneath could be an issue (I could just squeeze them into my Endura MT500 jacket). While riding I never found the batteries moved around, and their weight goes almost unnoticed as they are well supported by the Velcro cuffs.

Sealskinz’s Waterproof Heated Cycle Gloves are one of my new favorite pieces of gear. They will keep hands warm through frigid temperatures, the palms are thin enough to provide solid grip control, and I’m very happy with their fit and feel. These gloves will encourage me to ride on freezing cold days that I used to think twice about! MSRP is $160, and sizes S-XL are available in Black only.

Waterproof All-Weather Socks:

As fall and winter set it, things get really wet in B.C. so I was happy to try out some waterproof socks. As soon as I tried the Waterproof All-Weather socks on, I noticed they have a unique feel on your foot. These socks are a bit thicker and don’t stretch as easily as a typical riding sock, so they feel a bit like a wetsuit (but not as heavy-duty).

The Waterproof All-Weather socks are made with a hydrophilic membrane sandwiched between their inner and outer fabrics. A merino wool lining offers insulation, a comfortable feel, and helps absorb moisture. The footbed is padded to absorb shock, the toe seams are flat, and slippery anti-blister outer fabric reduces friction inside your shoe. A Hydrostop lining is placed inside the cuff to prevent water from dripping into your socks.

Ride Impressions:

Sealskinz’s sizing is normal, but I had one fit issue; the cuffs on my socks are not tight enough on my ankles, and water could easily get in from above. Despite the loose cuff, the socks never drooped down enough to bunch up inside my shoes. I should note, as a consumer I would have opted for a longer cut than the ankle sock style I got to test. Obviously the shorter sock is better for warmer weather, but in my area it typically gets wet in the spring and fall, so I would have bought a sock with more leg coverage (which may solve the loose hem issue).

So how well can a waterproof sock breathe? The Sealskinz did a pretty good job of this, only allowing for a bit of a clammy feel but never letting my feet get wet inside. I wore them for a whole day of driving to and from Squamish and riding in cold, wet conditions for over two hours, and the worst I can say is my feet felt slightly clammy. Throughout my testing I never took off the socks to find pruned toes or sweaty feet.

These socks are not particularly warm, which is good since they are an all-weather sock. I rode in 0°c temps and came home with cold toes… as I should have expected! I didn’t get to test how much heat they can handle, as I received the socks in November.

One day I put the socks waterproofing to the test by standing in a deep puddle for about two solid minutes. One of my well-worn shoes has a hole in it and immediately filled with water, while the other only let a bit in. I checked the dryer foot first, and the sock had successfully prevented me from feeling any of the dampness inside my shoe. When I checked the wetter foot, I thought I had soaked through the sock at first; the outside of the sock was saturated, but when I took it off my foot wasn’t wet. I then turned the sock inside out, and the lining was dry!

At this point it’s safe to say under any normal riding conditions, these socks should keep your feet completely dry (as long as the top hems are snug). In cooler temps they breathed well enough to keep my feet sweat-free, and they’re no less comfortable than a normal riding sock. The Waterproof All-Weather Ankle Length Socks sell for $42.50, in sizes S-XL. Color choices are Black/Neon Yellow, Black/Grey or Black/Grey/White.

When it comes to bikepacking or camping, carrying the least amount of gear you can without sacrificing too much comfort is an art. A new company called Hydrolight Outdoor Gear has found a unique way to eliminate one extra piece of camping gear – They’ve just introduced their patented Hydrolight 2L Reservoir, which does double-duty as a hydration reservoir and a campsite lantern.

The Hydrolight Reservoir is a 2L hydration bladder with a transparent external pocket that holds your headlamp. With the headlamp switched on the water pack diffuses light in all directions, creating an area light for your campsite or tent. While it’s a simple innovation on an existing product, the illuminating reservoir does combine two clever ideas; giving one item more than one function, and using water’s natural ability to effectively diffuse light.

The reservoir boasts several typical features, like a fold-over Slide Lock top closure that’s leak-proof and easy to fill. Hydrolight’s self-sealing bite valve offers an on/off switch so you can block off the hose when it’s not in use. The 36” hose attaches to the bladder via an auto-shutoff, quick-connect mechanism. The reservoir also has a rigid handle to make filling and carrying easy, and a capacity gauge so you can track your consumption.

Located on the lower backside of the bladder, the Hydrolight’s transparent headlamp pocket is waterproof and has a zippered closure (The above video gives you a quick look at the headlamp pocket). The reservoir does not come with a headlamp, so its brightness depends on whatever light you put in it.

The Hydrolight reservoir is made from a durable and abrasion resistant plastic with welded seams. It can tolerate a wide temperature range, so it’s OK to freeze it or clean it in your dishwasher. The reservoir is 100% BPA and PVC free. The 2L Reservoir weighs 6.5 oz/0.41 lbs, and measures 15.75 x 7.75”. To make hanging it easy, an adjustable nylon buckle strap is included.

So is this a worthy innovation for bikepackers and backcountry enthusiasts? The Hydrolight reservoir will save you from carrying a camp lantern but you still need to bring a headlamp to illuminate the bladder, and whenever you walk away from your campsite, you’ll lose your area light. The skeptic in me also wonders how easily this could be done with any bladder and headlamp, with the addition of a few elastics or small straps. But…

…at just $34.99, the Hydrolight 2L Reservoir is about the same price as other bladders. So, if your pack is due for a new reservoir, trying out the Hydrolight could be a “no extra cost” option that packs a little bonus.

It uses a two-door design with a vestibule off either side when you stake down the fly. The clever attachment points even allow you to partially roll the fly down to give you a view without completely uncovering the tent.

The small BioLite HeadLamp 200 isn’t a bike-specific light, it’s just a head lamp. But its simple, lightweight design and flexible fit make it a great option for cyclists, whether the bikepacker looking to light up camp at night, or a mountain biker stuffing one into a hydration pack as a backup for when ride mishaps keeps you out in the woods after dark.

BioLite is an interesting company that has developed some unique sustainable light, power & cooking products for off-the-grid lifestyles. (There’s surely some #vanlife or even just bikepacking adventure crossover potential there.) But at the same time, they’ve developed a couple of simple, USB-rechargeable headlamps that deliver a lightweight, comfortable fit.

BioLite HeadLamp 200 light, compact rechargeable 200 lumen LED multi sport head lightThe latest HeadLamp 200 is probably most interesting to us cyclists, because its small size and flat mount strap works just as well over a helmet as directly on your forehead. Fitting it around my medium/large POC Tectal helmet, the strap wasn’t even opened up all the way, and the light stayed in place as I rode along at a reasonable clip on or off-road.

HeadLamp 200 – Tech details

The name tells how much light this thing puts out. At 200 lumens of white LED light output, it isn’t really enough for proper full-speed mountain biking – throwing light for a claimed 50m with the full power spot. But, as an emergency backup, it’ll easily get you out of the woods. That’s more than enough light for around camp, and you can smoothly dim it down to just 5 lumens to extend burn time by 13x.

The 65° adjustable-angle BioLite HeadLamp 200 also has a full-power white strobe mode that is literally blinding (using the main central LED), and low power red flood LED for visibility with less impact to others, plus a red strobe mode (using the small LED, left of center). One top button takes you through all the modes, and it returns to whatever mode you used last when you turn it back on. Flash for commuter visibility or emergencies, steady for seeing where you are going.

Burn time is rated as 3 hours on high (200lm) and up to 40 hours on low (5lm) with the built-in 700mAh, 2.6Wh lithium ion battery – rechargeable via micro-USB. I’ve yet to push it to running out yet, but likely will in an upcoming trip.

BioLite HeadLamp 200 light, compact rechargeable 200 lumen LED multi sport head light 49g actual weight

The little headlamp weighs just 49g on our scale (1g under BioLite’s claim). The slim fit of the fabric headband fits comfortably against my forehead, and stays stable & not bouncing without having to strap it down very tight. I did cinch it down a bit more to eliminate bouncing while riding. The only concern I might have is that over time the strap may stretch out (a problem I’ve had with previous head lamps.)

But even though the fabric strap isn’t replaceable, the rear elastic is simply stitched onto the wicking fabric front, and sewing on another band in ten years’ time probably wouldn’t be a big deal.

The $45 / 45€ BioLite come in one size that will fit down to around a 50cm head, up to fitting over a helmet with the adjustable wicking fabric strap (available in gray, teal, red & olive). BioLite even hives buyers a 30 day risk free trial called the HolyFit Guarantee to make sure every buyer is satisfied.

As for me, the BioLite is now a regular part of my bikepacking kit. Gone are the need for extra batteries, and I’ll even be able to charge it off my SON dynamo hub on the go.
